Impreza Outback Sport vs Jetta Trek Edition???

Alright so i'm lookin at a black 1999 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport with 177k miles on it for $2495 on saturday but i'm also lookin at a black 1997 VW Jetta Trek Edition with 186k miles on it for $2499. I'm leaning a little towards the impreza just becuase subarus are known for being a lot more reliable than v-dubs and the impreza would probably hold up a lot better in the mountians... but then again the v-dub is a 5 speed standard with a V6 so it'd probably be alot more fun to drive... what do you guys think???

subaru, especially with those miles and as a ski vehicle. BTW Trek edition is nothing they just gave away a bike with the car.

yeah but this ones a glx trek so its got the v6 with 172 horsepower.. but regardless im thinkin subbies the way to go especially with 40 plus trips up to the mountains coming up in a couple months...

definitly get a subaru. i got one yesterday and i fucking love it. plus vw's electrical system sucks balls. my buddy just got one and none of his windows work or anything

Yeah I know it's got the vr6 im just saying it's not because it's a trek that it comes with one, ya know?

yeah dude, i would say the jetta having the V6 would be the reason you should not go with it, especially with that kind of mileage. The VW 4banger is a much more reliable engine plus it does a lot better with gas mileage. I would go with the suby and if you can trade a few years for less miles, I think that would definatley be worth it as well.

i am getting an impreza from my grandpa for 800 new clutch and brakes. 160k miles so for 800 tis pretty good cause it'll last a long time

thats a good deal i had to drop 2300 for a 95 explorer with 160k. if your looking for a 4 cylinder around here (NH) its gonna be at least 3500 regardless of condition/ age/ milage.

ive ridden in several subarus and i think they are shitty quality. thats just my opinon though. i hear they are reliable while the VW may give you a better ride you will most likely be dumping money into it. i have a saab 9000 which has been pissing me off but i would take it over a subaru any day.

yeah now that i think about it i'd get fucking awful mileage with a v6 and driving it that hard it'd probably be shot after at 200k. subaru it is NS. thanks

there are way too many miles on both of those cars. i would rethink your decision and if there are any other choices check them out

There is a lot more to high miles than just the engine internals itself. Higher mileage means more wear on the suspension, drivetrain, transmission and other parts. The more miles, the more the liklihood of other things going.

It all comes down to how well the car's been maintained. It still could be in great shape if the owner kept good care of it, or it could have been neglected. I agree though maybe look for something a couple years older but with fewer miles. check craigslist if you haven't, a lot better deals on there compared to sites like autotrader or cars.com

bro i have worked for both Subi and VW dealers and hands down from my experience, do not buy the VW. ISSUES up the ying yang bro. 177k is a lot for the sub for that price, just make sure the head gaskets are not leaking, and start it cold and make sur eyou dont hear any knocking, if those are good, you are good roll!!!

get the subaru. If nothing else, the parts and service will cost less and your insurance probably will too. Also that sounds like a really good either for both those cars. Anything from 1999 where I live is usually like $4 or 5000 at least if its driveable.

yeah i'm pretty sure its in decent shape... its from a little subaru dealership and its only had one owner who drove it to boston everyday from nh so thats where most of the miles are from. and craigslist is where i found it too so its legit. i'm pretty sure its been kept in good shape, i just want it to hold up come ski season...
