Ignoring a concussion

There's probably threads on this topic already but I can't find them

How many of you have had lasting complications due to concussions? Did you not rest properly after the initial injury? Or did complications arise as you had more concussions ?

Did you find ways to overcome the lasting symptoms or is now a constant battle trying to manage the effects?

these are just general questions but I'm more so interested to hear stories/experiences etc..

Had a few concussions through my years, worst one was back in HS and I literally got next into next week. Took a head hit in a football game and I got concussed for almost 48 hrs, didnt know who or where I was, I was awake but had no clue who was who. Had headaches for a few years afterwards but they slowly went away. Had difficulty sleeping but that later got easier. Had a few smaller concussions since then riding motorcycles and from skiing but I have been lucky to not have any long term affects as of now.

I ignored what was most likely a concussion back in march because I wanted to finish out the ski season, but now I have headaches all the time sometimes to the point where I can’t sleep.

can’t fuck around with the brain man

Nope not at all got two concussions in the span of 3 months a couple years ago, one being minor and the second be pretty bad. I really just rested well for 2 weeks it was miserable but I managed and really just make sure to be careful. Honestly you should be fine if you properly let your brain heal.

my worst one was from hockey a few years ago, felt like garbage for a solid two weeks and luckily did all the right things so no side affects afterwards. had a least one minor one last summer from mtb and probably had one from skiing but ignored it cause i needed to do a lot of school.

ive found if u keep away from screens like your supposed to it heals up a lot faster and feels a lot better lol

PSA: Please don’t ignore a concussion. Brain cells are the slowest to heal and can have debilitating consequences if not treated properly. Headaches/migraines, vision issues, balance issues, emotional and behavioral issues, etc. are common even after allowing adequate time to recover. Please take care of your noggin and let yourself fucking recover.

Well it wasn't until I was in my 20's before I truly realized what encompasses a concussion. Definitely can say I've had 20-30+ easy with 10+ short term black outs from getting my shit rocked. Never had any photophobia so they were probably mild? Really only have concentration issues but Adderall really helped in college for that. I do get migraines tho. CTE is kinda insidious so who knows about that.

I don't understand how people get concussions. There are plenty of times I can think of where I probably should've gotten one but I just haven't.

Protect your brain. Brain damage will change your life.

My little brother suffered a traumatic brain injury 5 years ago and he'll be living with the repercussions for the rest of his life. No more contact or action sports ever again. He went into a really scary depression because he got hit with the reality that his life will never be the same. His personality changed a lot in the first year or two. He's doing better now and his emotions and personality have mostly shifted back, but he still gets debilitating migraines that last for days. He also has short-term memory loss. He'll pack his car for a trip and 20 minutes later he'll forget that he packed and start repacking, only to bring it out to his car again and see that stuff is already in there. He's learned to manage his condition and he works with his neurologist on trying to keep the symptoms under control. But it's something he'll carry with him forever.

pretty easy to get a mild concussion with little to no symptoms, it just depends on the severity. You can smash you head and not get knocked out, not feel bad symptoms or you could barely tap your head falling and get KO'd, its a delicate balance.

I hit my head in a car accident over 3 years ago never really thought I had a concussion and tried to ignore it but it defiantly gave me some very minor ptsd which I've come around to accept within the past year. I also got a couple bad ones in HS football years back but I 'took time off" which was like a week after begging the trainer to come back. defiantly have some permanent damage, but hey it is what is Im fine for the most part compared to some people I know.

I've got my head hard a lot, and especially after a few bad bonks, each time makes me more nervous. My first concussion I remember (well I don't remember much) was from a hs soccer game. Got elbowed or shouldered in the head and had to be carried off the field. Next time was probably freshman yr of college right before spring break I hit my face on a cliff side coming out of a couloir. I should've chilled out but nah I went home for spring break and partied and kept skiing. Then in one day I hit my head on a rail and knocked myself out on a backflip at the end. I laid off the weed and alc for a day or two but never went to the doc and went right back to smoking a shit ton of weed within a few days. Finally, I was decently drunk and might've hit my head a couple times trying dub rodeos and backslapping. Then I proceeded to get more drunk and blackout downtown that night.

Since the spring break ones, I've had serious issues with my speech, I tend to slur my words and talk a lot less eloquently. My attention span is shot and I can't do mental math like I used to. My memory is hazy. My drive is reduced. Everything has gotten slightly better in the two years since that week. I've hit my head a few times since but nothing as bad. Each concussion makes another more likely, whether you got treated or not, and I'd assume ignoring them amplifies this effect. I often find myself wondering how different my life would be if I never got concussions. How much better college would've been and my career path would be much more obtainable I think.

In 4th-7th grade got scab faced 3 times but the last one I got knocked out for 1/2 hour or so .i was basically a mush brain for several years after, it slowly got better but overall was a bad experience, I do not recommend.
