How Does Depression Affect Children and Adolescents?
Ten percent of children today deal with some form of depression. There are two basic types of depression, developmental depression, where children and adolescents feel a sense of emptiness or have identity issues; with positive support from parents, teachers, and friends this type of depression can be outgrown. The other major form of depression is serious depression, this type is longer term, people with this form of depression have difficulty in relationships, this form of depression usually occurs when people have had a major loss of a family member or friend, or they have had a difficult life thus far. Depressed children experience a feeling of sadness, more often then not. Some children who are depressed have serious thoughts about suicide which is very daunting. Many of these children think about suicide because they feel negatively about themselves and/or their everyday surroundings; self-worthlessness is difficult for children to cope with. Depression does have masks therefore it is quite simple for parents and teachers to identify whether or not a child is struggling with depression. By the word masks I mean children who were once happy and active become bored with everyday activities and do not perform well in school and other daily social surroundings. Children also have bodily effects due to depression; effects include difficulty eating and sleeping, and emotional problems. Many college students experience depression at the beginning of the year about twenty-five percent of students feel depressed in some way, as the year goes on approximately seventy-five percent of students are depressed. This could be due in large part to the fact that most of theses young adults are away from home for the first time in their lives and they have a difficult time to cope. As the year goes on it gets more and more difficult being away and the stresses of school increase as the end of the year nears with finals and all.
