iFrames - Java/MySQL

Anyone have experience with iframes? If so, what do you think of them? Good? Bad? I think it'd be better to put the online window in an iframe, that way it could be integrated with the rest of the site.. maybe.. I don't know.. I would rather make the online part a java applet, but I've never used JAva, and don't even know if it can be used with a MySQL database.. insights?

I've done a few designs with an iFrame and the biggest problem is simply the compatibility of it. but other then that they work pretty well. And in this case you could just have a link in place for bowsers that can't view the iFrame that opens the online window in a new window...

The good thing is that 96% of people that use NS use Internet Explorer... so it wouldn't be compatible with only 4% of visitors..

dude screw it...screw iframes...i'm telling you...make everyone reformat to ext3, install gtk, and just write a gtk front end in c, then have it like a mini aol...it'd be much cooler and i could be able to understand the entire site even when i'm wasted.

The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs.

haha yes... I could also let a bunch of monkeys take over NS.. then we'd all understand it under any state.

Good news.. I spent a couple hours today looking into flash and php and such and I made a new online window in flash! It's VERY primitive right now (as in it only lists the names, in one color, and has a crappy scroll bar) but it's getting there and I think it'll be totally do-able. It'll be nice becuase there will no longer be a frame on the left, and the entire thing won't have to refresh! So it'll update without you even noticing.. so far, so good!

You can now test out the new Flash online window by clicking on 'NewOnline Alpha Test' at the very bottom of the current online window.

If this test goes well, I can get rid of the frames and make the page a kabillion times better. So far, so good.

Please leave your feedback in the NewOnline Alpha Test thread.
