My family and I had pretty big plans to go ski up retallak (spelling?) in march. i'm sixteen years young, and i'm a damn good skier as far as actually being able to, uhm, ski. anywho, we make our reservations and such 5 months ahead, and just about 2 months before our trip is schedualed we get a call telling us that i can't go because i'm too young. I understand the liability and such and yadda yadda, but my mom asked about sean and kye skiing there. the lady on the phone said "oh, that only happened once, and it won't ever happen again because it's soo much of a liability. i'm sorry, but not matter how good you claim your son is, he can't go." Soo we cancelled our trip and had to look elsewhere. i made this thread because i just finished checking out all the pictures of team oakley, in which sean is seen at retallak resort.

Awesome. I understand the liability, but (excuse my bluntness...) but i'm pretty confident i can ski (keyword, SKI, not jump/grind/whatever) better than sean. again, excuse my claim, but it's for discussion.

discuss. similar happenings elsewhere?
 
i HIGHLY doubt you can ski BC better than sean or kye..... i wanna see you gainering cliffs or doing RIDICULOUS several drop lines through bushes and shit......... that aside you should be able to go
 
well I mean as far as they're concerned the average 16 year old is a complete gaper, let alone as good as any oakley team riders. plus I'm sure if you were buddies with tanner he'd make an exception for you too. That's kinda weak but not much you can do. Just try bein stoked that your parents are taking you on a cat skiing trip cuz wherever you go it'll be dope as hell.
 
I think when it comes to skiing Retallack lodge its more about your creativity and over all attitude towards skiing the pow. Not just your level of confidence. Another thing is Sean and Kye have been skiing with Tanner and them for years and because Tanner and them are part time owners they decide who skis. But watch Kye in Idea, Lost and Found, or believe and his skiing is incredible and Seans is too. Hard to match man... But that is a bummer good luck on finding a better place!
 
Doesnt really matter if the kid is a complete gaper or not, its a matter of buisness. His parents made the reservation months in advance. They probably took days off and made certain plans around the trip already. His parents probably even made a security deposit by now. Then they get a call that they can't go AFTER they did all that? What, their vacation gets ruined now cause rules get changed after the fact? Thats fucked up, I feel bad for the kid.
 
that lady was full of shit: kye, sean and callum went least year and this year too, so it wasn't just a one-off. unless they're all 18 now which is possible.

and kid, i seriously doubt you're better than sean and there's absolutely no way you're better than kye: that kid is gonna be the best all-around skier in the world very soon.
 
letting the oakley team ski there means big time publicity for them so they probably don't mind the additional liability. oh yeah, those kids are largely covered by one of if not the largest eyewear company in the world so i don't really think libility was much of an issue.

Im pretty sure Sean is sixteen and Im pretty sure Callum is over 18. And Kye is 18 now. Either way that really does suck, pretty unfortunate news but you do have to realize that these kids are big in the industry and kill it super hard.
 
makes sense, you can't sign the release and mom can't for you because she isn't skiing for you....

I think retallak would have to change insurance companies for them to change their policy and that just isn't going to happen.

Well Thall knows Sean Callum and Kye, knows they kill it, and knows they probably won't get hurt any more than he would. Also the likelihood of them suing him if they did is low. He doesn't know you. So yeah. Slight difference there.
 
Isn't that pretty much your only argument for why you shoud go there? I mean, you already said you understood the liability aspect, so what point are you trying to make? They (understandably) don't allow minors to ski there, you're finding somewhere else to go, so I don't see any issue. Not to mention it's sweet that your family would do that with you.
 
Tanner and Seth own that place now. Kye is under age but maybe hes a really good buddy of theirs or he helped buy the place. owners can do whatever they want i guess.

A buddy of mine went there and got to talk to those people.
 
they know how good they are but they have no way to tell how good you are. Everybody says they are betetr then they are.
 
dude, your parents should be able to sign some kind of liability waiver or statutory declaration on your behalf. I'd look more into doing something like that because this is a completely BS excuse.
 
To the OP:

Cat skiing operations are popping up left and right. I don't know this one specifically but it is you that should be the one that is wary. Instead of going with one based on PR from Team Oakley skiing there do some more research and find one that not only has excellent terrain but more importantly an outstanding safety record. Check the guides qualifications and make an informed choice.

Both Mike Wiegle and CMH (heli ski operations) have family programs so there are undoubtedly cat skiing operations that have them as well.

sweet, typical NS hate when i wasn't trying to start a thing. In your eyes, i may not have room to speak, but in mine, you havn't seen me ski, so i don't think you have much room either. sorry if i came off cocky, but it's gay as shit when you say dumb stuff just to make yourself feel better. thanks to some of those who posted insightful things above. Maybe if a mod sees this, this thread can get deleted becuase i'm tired of being called out. Oh, and my mom can slay, she wouldn't be inside making me hot chocolate. ^^^ :)

honestly i can see where your coming from kye and cam are good skiers but i there are defiantly non-pro kids who are on the same level of SKIING ability and maybe you actually do fall into that category. But, liability is liability those kids are friends with tanner if they fuck them selfs up there not going to turn around and sue him (not saying you would but in this day and age you never know who's going to try and sue you). If he allowed you to ski there you would most likely be excluded from his insurance policy and he would be fucked if you tried to sue him if you got hurt. yah it sucks you can't go and it sucks you planed the trip but business is business (not great business in this case) but hes gota protect his investment. If i was him (his business) i would have been like sorry and offered you some kinda discount for when you turn 18 so you would come back.

kinda lame, esspeically for you, but smart in other ways....powder will be less tracked out....and it will keep the young average gaper from going out and getting killed.

They have a limit already of how many people can stay there at a time, and if there is a last minute cancellation they sell those spots to locals for 200 bucks a pop. How would making this kid not come make it so that less snow will be skied. Also, with cat skiing it is pretty hard to track up all of their territory, considering not even all of it has ever been skied. Also, it is snowing alot up there right now, so it isn't a concern on ANYONES minds. Do you know anything?
 
go to chatter creek. its the best. or check baldface and see how old you gotta be. I know a few kids who have gone to chatter or powder cowboy that were under 18.
 
The real dicks aren't the guys at retallack, it's the idiots who hurt themselves and sue ski resorts/operators/anyone except themselves
