If you were black...

Would you be offended by this:

Today my fairly conservative sociology professor was taking attendance at the beginning of class. When he finished, the one black girl in our class asks

"Did you get me on the attendance?"

Teacher asks

"Did you just come in?"

Girl

"No I've been here the whole time"

Teacher

"Oh, I must be colorblind or something."

At this point everyone in the class starts murming what-the-fucks and other surprised comments.

Then the guy goes on to explain that he doesnt even notice race and that race is a huge part of sociology and all this bullshit, basically diggin himself a deeper hole.

The girl said it was fine, but this completely changed my view of this guy.

Thoughts?

i would be very insulted. i think that claiming that you are colourblind in that kind of situation discounts a lot of history.

being a sociology teacher he is probably just way more comfortable with race than you are so he feels comfortable making jokes about it, and he had to explain himself afterwards because he realized he was standing in front of a class of kids who thought any sort of reference to someones race was racism.

In middle school my music teacher told a black kid in our class to "get your cotton-pickin hands to do your homework." now that is racist.

hahahahahahaha that was hilarious. your class needs to lighten up. he didn't attack the girl, it was a simple joke. inappropriate for the classroom, a little. but it wasn't like he called her the n-word or something.

I agree, fuck all this PC shit what the hell is with that. Oh we can' say anything anymore because SOMEONE god forbid might be offended. The girl said it was fine so I don't see the issue here.

i sit right next to her usually and the reaction on her face told a different story. i think she said it was fine just because she was embarrassed

I personally don't see a problem with it. She's black, so what? I think that making an issue out of these types of things is worse than passing it off. Everyone's different and unique, we can't just ignore everyone's features. Her being offended would be like me being offended when someone called me "blondie."

ps I don't know if I'm explaining my point well, hopefully some people will understand what I'm saying.

this thread is so dumb.

white people spend way too much time trying to figure out if something said to a black person is offensive or not.

we have no right to comment because we don't understand and could never understand the feelings conjured up when a racist comment towards a black person is made.

this thread is a joke and i can't believe you people who are some of the whitest are being so serious about their comments answering behalf of black people on whether or not what he said was racist or not.

yea^ but still, why take the chance of offending someone with acomment like that? or why risk your job as a teacher with a "joke" like that...

whatever.

that joke is between the teacher and all the black people in the class. im just telling people to stop commenting on it like they have a clue.

Is there even a single sociology professor that isn't a pretentious boob thats out of touch with the rest of the world?

I sure haven't found any.

agreed. i used it like 2 hours ago.

i run into one of my friends who is black and he goes wtf dumbass can't you see me? i was like oh sorry i must be colorblind. him and his brother found it hilarious. so people need to lighten up.
