If punk rock is dead.

then so is freeskiing.

think about that shit for a second. skiing is becoming like "MTV punk". where has the sport that I loved so much gone?

anyone who grew up skiing in the early 2000's should watch the start of this movie. The parallels between early punk rock and early skiing are so close, it's amazing. Then the movie gets into commercialization and stuff. It's eerily close to what I have seen skiing go through.

but the awesome part is that punk is not dead. Let's forget about the olympics and xgames and movies and all that bullshit. All we need to do is ski park, crush moguls, drink beer, break rules and have lots of fun.

Skiing is only dead if you believe it is. The Olympics isn't the only thing going on with skiing. Forget about the rest of the world that doesn't care and just ski for yourself and for the sport you love.

Why are so many people worrying about skiing "dying" or "going in the wrong direction"? If everyone who is freaking out about all this Olympic's bull shit just goes out and skis the way they want to there is no need to worry. In case you haven't noticed the skiing community cant die until we are gone.

Newschoolers is a huge part of the core scene and as long at it is still popular and we are still here there is nothing to worry about.

if the olympics is the death of freestyle then it will also be the birth of something new that hasn't been invented yet. just as nordic, aerials, and moguls were precursors to our generation of skiing, the time will come to give rise to the next. free skiing will never die.

newschoolers is unfortunately going the other way with the mainstream. of course they would want to. it's where all the money is.

look at early 2000's threads on NS. it was complete mayham, so much different from the white-washed ns we have today. It was stupid and pointless and chaotic. but it was skiing!

I totally understand why the ns admins would want to go the corporate direction. I bet they really cash in a lot. with 15 second long ads to watch a video clip, I at least hope they do.

I hope we have a mogul renascence. Not the competition style crap though. I mean like real natural mogul skiing, doing crazy shit, neon colours, ski bunnies, cocaine fuelled parties etc, the park jocks can debate about their latest ski tech, or which rail slide gets them more points or whatever. I just wanna ski pow and slay some bumps.

lol the internet in the early 2000's was very different than it is now. NS is not white washed, we just dont allow homophobic and racial slurs (sorry for all you stupid kids who love to say fag) and you're just butthurt because your shitty threads get deleted. NS is far from white washed and advertisement is what supports this website, without ads there wouldn't be NS, you guys need to get that into your thick skulls.

no man. NS has gone full on commercial. dew tour, SIA, sochi, xgames, some big company sponsored edit, etc.

that's all I ever see here now. I get that I could go and put my own content on here. but the NS community has shifted away from the awesome kind of content that people like me wold make/enjoy. Unless I have an HD camera and a steady cam and like a switch double cork, with a boring overplayed intro and some boring overplayed music, i'm not gonna make successful content on NS.

It's not just NS the staff that are going this way. It's the community as a whole. As skiing becomes mainstream, we get "the sheep". They want to see the clean cut guys laying down perfect triple corks in sochi. They want skiing to have a "positive image" and all that stuff. so obviously NS is going to follow the herd, considering NS is created by the herd.

fuck the herd though. skiing needs to grow a pair of balls.

hurd? heard?

You seemed to have missed out on people like hot possie, hood crew and a number of other "not pro" dudes that make edits and put them on NS.

Honestly you sounds like a grumpy old man, times change and resisting change isn't healthy. NS is going to be different than it used to be and shit dude its been like this for years, i dunno if you JUST noticed but this is how its been for awhile. Things are going to change whether you like it or not.

I don't even know what to say about your second paragraph, you seem extremely paranoid that things will be "different" and i dont see why they would be. Snowboarding is a great example of how a sport can go "main stream" (neither skiing or snowboarding touch other professional sports including skateboarding) Snowboarding has the comp riders and the urban/film riders and skiing will be the same.

I'm also not sure why people care so much what people think about skiing, no one gave a fuck in 1999 why should we now?

no man.

once I get the chance to go skiing again I am going to unleash the best stuff skiing has seen since like shred like lettuce or session 1242 or FARP. it's going to be revolutionary. just you wait.

i'm not gonna let those corporate bastards and governing bodies take skiing away from us again. we gotta rebel now.

I don't know where you get these irrational thoughts dude, nothing is going to happen as long as you just go ski, thats all that matters.

really?

what happens if parks become "training facilities". What if I need to be a member of a team to use them? it might sound crazy, but that happened to freestyle skiing. How about if I want to enter a competition. I might need to get like certified to try a trick I want to do.

what if pro skiers get rich and buy condos on the mountain and complain when a kid wants to bum in the parking lot?

that shit could happen if we don't fight back.

Also I understand your reference to aerials/moguls but the big part you are missing is that aerials/moguls have had regulations like qualifying jumps and have always attended training facilities (aka gyms with trampolines) from their genesis. I think global warming will melt all the snow in the world before any of these things happen to slopestyle and halfpipe.

Not really a fair comparison to slopestyle/superpipe IMO, hotdogging was basically just skiing bumps randomly and getting scored for it, its apples and oranges. Mogul skiing was reformed nto the sport it is today, slopestyle skiing hasn't change/been reformed at all and i dont see it changing either. If you wanna be paranoid and upset about this, by all means go for it but having a shitty attitude won't take you very far.

Punk and skiing dont have very many similarities... except for the fact everyone was listening to that genre in the 90's. They were used in the early new school years videos because videos did not have structure nor were skiers very cultured musically (nor was downloading possible yet).

Skiing has also branched off into different aspects. You can envision skiing in many ways; from the dirty ski bum to the parent teaching the next generation the joys of skiing to the hardcore contest driven athlete. You can ski with different techniques, use the old mogul technique and fuse it with deep pow and fat skis. For me, to be the best skier in the world, you must be able to ski perfectly all aspects of the sport, including media.

Well, maybe Im am wrong about my first statement, skiing is just like punk rock; The style changes, the aspects and variations used in punk has completely revolutionized the genre. If you can still come out with something creative and genre oriented with a dry guitar and tam-tams, you can change skiing in a separate direction people will follow.

If you're worried in the least about how the activity you love or the music you like is viewed by others, you're just a little bitch. Fuck you and anybody else that gives even a single shit what other people think about it. Alive, dead, whatever- that's some hipster shit IMO. Skiing is as alive as you make it ya fuckin' pussy. Stop giving so many fucks how the world thinks.

you just don't realize my point. punk is not dead. neither is skiing. but the shit you see on TV. that's not skiing.

this is skiing

Eating at red lobster is skiing?

You're not skiing!!!! I'm sorry but you're not a freeskier, a FREEskier does whatever he/she wants to. When you put restrictions on what can and can't be done you're worse than the fucking FIS.

Also #butthurt

I would but chicken would PM me and the other mods along with posting in the transparent mod thread until someone answers him

That's actually a great video. Scotty Brooksbank was one of my idols as a young lad. He was in a ton of early Warren Miller Films. Not at all understanding what this has to do with Punk Rock, but thanks for posting that.

I just don't see why you think this is idiotic. I have a real point to make.

A lot of kids don't know how bad this commercialization and restrictions on skiing can be. If it happened to moguls, why would it not happen to slopestyle?

it's not like mogul skiing stopped being fun, it's just that everything around it stopped being fun, and that's why we have slopestyle in the first place.

i still love doing crazy shit, snow bunnies and cocaine fueled parties so I have no idea what you are talking about

eating at red lobser is not skiing.

rockey mountain bagel co is skiing.

I don't want to be a freeskier. I don't subscribe to your definition of "freeskiing", it is too restricting.

I am a skier. Freeskiing is not the future of our sport. It is going to go the way of moguls and aerials if we keep it up. Trust me.

You're an idiot. I said FREE, meaning do WHATEVER you want. If you want rules and comps fine, if you don't then don't.

But hey, free to you means you CAN'T compete and you CAN'T have rules.

Can't=not free

no I think we should compete.

but I don't think competing in racing is freeskiing. I don't think skicross is freeskiing. etc. hippies like you do not have the right to define freeskiing as "Whatever you want, it's all free". That's total BS. freeskiing has a definition, and the way it is going is not freeskiing anymore.

just like mainstream punk rock is not punk rock anymore.

fuck the FIS. fuck the olympics. drink beer, eat vegtables, break the rules, fuck shit up, etc.

that's freeskiing man. you are just a poseur.

Hahaha, you're right, I'm a poser.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm also a pow schlarping hippie. Sorry I don't like your regulations and definitions. I'll be freeriding while you go and ski a man made park.

It says you're from BC, I didn't know that was anywhere near Squaw Valley.

Haven't participated in a dick measuring contest in quite some time.

Thanks for the invite.

because you always lost.

"all mountain skiers" or whatever you wanna call yourself. with your gore-tex jackets and goggles over your helmet. you guys aren't punk.

We didn't spend a dollar on Dew Tour coverage. We didn't spend a dollar on SIA coverage. We didn't spend a dollar on X Games coverage.

We're sending Ethan Stone to the Olympics (and both paying for his trip and his work), because he was the highest rated long form journalist on Newschoolers.com last year. Whether or not you agree with NS having a presence in Sochi, I hope you can recognize the opportunity we are giving Ethan.

I don't know what you mean by big company sponsored edits, but we're probably not spending any money on them.

Please find and watch these shows: The Hood Crew, Totally Trevor, Tabarnak Pack, Mashed Potatoes, Inspired Media, Traveling Circus, Good Enough, The Weak, etc. and see if you can track down a edit that contains both a HD steady cam and a double.

---

tl;dr Fuck you, go skiing... It's actually still a lot of fun!

In reference to both. Punk Rock and Skiing. Personally I've been into since most people on this site have been alive. Sure the 1st Punk Rock scene has long been "dead". People, bands, crews, and styles change. Nothing really ever stays the same. And while the roots are there..including within Freeskiing..it changes. But- I would say that Freeskiing is more alive than ever. Just because it's different now than it was, does not mean the nail's in the Coffin. Ive' got a good feeling that the best is yet to come! pk
