seriously? what the fuck is this? im really getting sick of seeing kids talking about totally riding just like Pollard Mahre and Pep, and then saying 'oh and if you still ski park with poles yur just a fag and you arent progressing skiing.' do yu honestly give a fuck what i do? go ahead. be cool and ride what yu want, but dont fucking think yur the shit because yu saw idea and yur "progressing" skiing. it doesnt matter, just ski and ride how yu want to. yur ruining the point of idea if yu trend whore the shit out of it. what i saw was skiing; just skiing. thats what made it different than other movies.

and ive seen the movie and i am a proud owner of a pair of new elizabeths. so dont say im just hating. sorry for the rant

Not to mention 90% of those who drop their poles because of watching Idea are likely going to regress their own skiing.  Just because super talented guys like Pep and Andy look good without poles doesn't mean you will.  Most will probably make skiing look worse.  I think only the best can pull it off and look good.  The others will look like wobbly snowlerbladers and send skiing's image back in that unwanted direction.

its going to happen man. theres so many sheep in skiing so you just got to ignore them, do your own thing and laugh at them while they dump their parents money into our industry. :)

Does it affect YOU the least bit that some kid doesn't use poles when he skis? Or tries to ski like Pep, Andy or Pollard? That answer: No, it doesn't affect yOu at all. Just go shred, and let them look like goobers, or in some cases, badass.

#1 It does affect me.  Skiing's overall image matters for anyone associated with the industry.  Snowlerblading was terrible for skiing and probably turned more potential skiers into snowboarders.  It was just as bad for skiing as one-piece Bogners.  If that's how the masses perceive skiing, less money goes into it, and that works against all of us.  Less magazine pages, less gear, fewer movie dollars, no Olympics halfpipe.

#2 Dropping your poles should be the last thing you should do if you're trying to ski like Andy and Pep.  Learn how to actually buy a turn first.  Learn how to carve.  Learn how to jump and ski powder.  Keep using the poles as a device for balance, rhythm and getting around and then when you've actually got some abilities, try skiing without them and see what you prefer.

I don't have a problem with people skiing without poles.  I have a problem with people who do something just to try to be like someone else, when it actually might work against them and make our overall sport look worse in the process.  Just ski and do what it takes to make YOU a better skier.  Don't try to be someone else.

yeah that's going to happen. if a pro does it, some kids are going to try to pick up on it. my theory is there are going to be a lot of unsteezy looking kids out there this season, but maybe they'll start to get used to it.

fuck man i completely agree with u man! (guy that started thread)
i'm not trying to hate on to hate on idea cause i thought alot of stuff was really sic about that movie
but one of the reasons why they made that movie was to express how you should be able to ride how ever you want. but what its seam the majority of NS is doing is just dropping their poles and riding exaclty like pep, andy, and pollard. Its not like the Idea guys were trying to convert everyone to ski like them, they were just doin what they wanted and are encouraging you to do what you want and not feel pressures from the ski community to look a certain way
i could understand a few people try a style like Idea's but its seems that everyone one is doing it and there is no way in fuck that that is their style. because they are just completely copying some one else's. but i do think that you need to get inspiration for your style from other peoples style. but instead of completely copying some else's get your inspiration from everywhere and put it together to make your own personal style. dont just do something case everyone else is doing it.

and like some other guy said earlier if your gonna drop your poles you better be able to ski well or u will just look like an absolute idiot (dont give me any bullshit about hatin cause i know everyone is concerned about their self image on NS, cause if u were not concerned about your image then you would not be riding like andy, pep, and pollard)

on and all u fuckers who keep commenting about how he forgot a bunch of O's stop being such immature, bitches and grow up

i ski without poles, not because i saw idea, actually i determined i was gonna try skiing without poles before i saw it, but that is neither here nor their. i would definetly use them if i was on anything off piste, tree's, powder, but in the park i've been skiing better then i have in my life, im sure its not all do to skiing without poles, but its definitely easier to eliminate my arms from controlling any part of my rotations.

regardless i dont care whether you use them or not either i ski in which style i want, and expect that everyone skis in the style they like.

You know what is a lamer trend than no poles? Kids who build little kickers in front of the library staircase and spend their day doing the same two moves.

ok i really understand what your saying and i agree and dissagree. i really hate the people that are like "O IM PROGRESSING SKIING LIKE PEP AND MAHRE." but i really think alot of the people skiing without poles arent like that. trust me i would NEVER ski anything chanenging without poles(trees, pow, steeps) but recently for the first few days of my season ive been screwing around the park without poles. i think its fun but in no way do i think im "progressing skiing". for whoever likes it do it. for people that dont, dont. for people that think im gay in the park skiing without poles i really dont give a shit. IM HAVING FUN WITH IT and thats all that matters to me.

If you kids were really about pushing this sport you would spend a hell of a lot less time talking about how you are, and instead you would just go ski.

I do both. I've noticed that it is a completely different aspect of skiing. You see and do things in a different way when you try it. At the same time, I don't think it's healthy for the sport to just drop what you are already comfortable doing to try something that is "cool". Eric and Pep and Andy were trying to make a point when they made idea, and as usual, people are taking it out of context. So if you want to do no poles, by all means do it, just don't do it because pros are doing it.

common misconsception

they are "progressing"

everyone else doing it is following,

well almost everyone.

if you do it at least try to find new reasons

to not use poles.

word, bad spelling is the worst trend in skiing right now.

the best thing you can do is ignore the people who dont get it... period.

I just wish kids would remember that what made that movie cool was that it was different. Being different makes you cool, not posing like a little girl. Those three guys did it and made it look sick, but once all the queers are doing it, it is instantly uncool. I just wish skiers would remember that starting trends is where its at, that is how skateboarding has taken over.

thank you. everyone shut the fuck up i'm so glad i ski to have fun not to worry about if i'm imitating someone or for the better of the industry or any other bullshit that has been spewed out of you fucks mouths. how are you hating on people having fun dude.

Ya I couldn't agree more. At first I saw Pep, Mahre and Walisch riding no poles and was like "ya thats pretty dope". But now its become some fucking stupid trend, and everyone thinks it makes them cool. And yes this is completely against idea's general message which was of corse to innovate, not follow trends and do your own thing. Since I was the last one to make a post about Idea which probably made you write this tread, I figure I might as well justify myself. I don't ride without poles unless i forget them at my house and am actually starting to hate all of these little trend whores skiing no poles all the time. BUT I think that IDEA was a dope movie that actually did in fact change my perspective and the way I look at skiing. I have basically just gained so much more respect for backcountry and really want to go hit powder instead of park, since I ski park basically every day of the year (east coast). IDEA opened peoples eyes and showed everyone that there is tons more to skiing then we think. Pep Pollard and Mahre opened doors and explored new, unique possibilities that no other skiers have before.

idea didnt really express wat u can do out side of the park
people have been skiing out of the park for years and years now and they have been doing creative things like that for a while also its just that no one has really payed enough attention to it untill IDEA came around cause everyone was hyping it sooo much that everyone watched it and thought "hey thats kinda cool"
It seems that not many people have recognized previous creative bakcountry things in older movies

i still dont see a bunch of kids without poles....i think im one of the only people, at stratton atleast, who doesnt use them, I enjoy no poles, its great its what i prefer and idea had no impact on me using poles or not....the only thing that movie did was make me want to ski pow and shoot roman candles at my friends. But i can relate with the creator of this thread, i reallly hate the kids who are in the park just  trying to bite others style or name droping everything, like oh watch me slide this rail like tommy walnuts....tom didnt invent the pretzel kids, im sorry...

EXACTLY!!!! When i am skiing park and just having a good time i see no reason to use poles they are a burden on me.....But when the pow day hits and im skiing the trees, lines, cliffs, and pow i use THE POLES.

WHO CARES!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!! just ride people. everyone needs to stop caring about what other people are doing. who has the right to say what anyone "should" be doing. if total barnies are thugged out WHO GIVES A DAMN?!?!?!?!?! If people have tight pants WHO GIVES A DAMN?!?!? we'll all have our own reasons for doing what we do. no one should have to justify anything to anyone else. we all like skiing, so just ski and shut your damn mouth.

it doesn't matter who you are, what your style is, how good you are, you are gonna do things that some people don't understand or like. it's gonna happen no matter what you do. now, do "trend whores" bother me? sure. but does it bother me enough to waste my time and energy getting pissed or raggin on people? why would i wanna waste the time when i could be focusing on what i like and what i wanna do. there's my rant. just have fun people. instead of taking that minute or second to hate on someone when you're on the hill, use that second to have fun and just enjoy what you're doing.

people need to stop worrying about what other people do, you can have your own style, even if you did just start doing it because you saw it in a movie, but either way, the people that are "idea trendwhores" and the people that do ski with poles need to just let it go and just go ski....its not like it matters if you have poles or not, or if your in the park.

or does it affect anyone at all whether he uses an o in your or not? i dont think so.

so stop the hate in this thread.

And to the creator fo thsi thread...

How can you say do what u want, and bash me for using no poles, and skiing is skiing, thats whats in idea, and then turna around and say u kids shouldnt use no poles in the park because 90 % of u are gonna look stupid.

doesnt make any sense, plus all the hate in this thread, terible thread

i personaly use poles but im helping my girlfriend learn to ski and i have her ski w/o poles because where shes at poles get in the way. when she gets better she'll probably use poles, but thats up to her.

basicly it comes down to this...

We all have our own styles. it doesnt matter what kinda of technigues you use. if not useing poles helps you be a better skier, who cares what other people think. as long as your trying to progress ourself thats all that matters.

the only reason i ever even tried skiing without poles was because of tom wallisch.

i tried it, and i like it, so i do it from time to time. i find skiing is more fun when i dont have poles. i dont know why, i just do.

and to the guy who said there is going to be alot of unsteezy kids out there riding without poles, how is it any less steezy then riding with poles?

it doesnt matter to me, and it shouldnt matter to anyone else if people are using poles, arent using poles, are wearing tight pants, baggy pants, have a goggle gap, dont, wear visors or dont wear visors. stop the hate spread the love.

I'll be honest. Andy Mahre is the reason started riding without poles occasionally. That was about 4 years ago though.

If you want to ride no poles DO IT, if you want to wear tight pants DO IT, if you want to look like a gangsta DO IT. Express yourself how you want and nobody else should care. If you like something compliment it, if you have a problem with it, keep the hate to yourself nobody wants to hear your shit. People are saying that snowblades and no poles are ruining the skiing industry...NO...all the hate you guys have is ruining skiing.

And to the thread creator, do you even know who your talking about? Have you ever talked to these kids that ride with no poles? You dont know why they ride no poles, you are probally just assuming they are copying Idea. I could be wrong, if so then im sorry and I just made myself look like an ass.

i say just have fun whatever it is....but it helps learning to carve and do things before no poles, cuz you won't always get to ski park. then later in your life you can still go ski some great pow and runs.

These guys are the ultimate trend whores..

Skiing without poles has been going on for years. Years and years and years and years. And years. And more years! Why is it such a big deal now?

If kids give you shit about skiing WITH poles, just ignore em. Whooooo caresssssssss

i think idea is progresive because they were doing illin tricks into pow, skied fakie in hip deep snow, and did crazy butters...i dont think it was revolutionary cuz they did it all w/ out poles....i droped my poles for a day my first day of skiing this year and i realized how much i do like my poles, even in the park...but i did love riding up the lift w/ out poles...

i completely disagree, you have to care about what other people are doing because if you dont how will you know if what you are doing is cool or not.

yea, i skid w/o poles last year. and usually the people that hate on it are the people that suck too bad to do it because its harder to balance.
