Icons, Static or Dynamic?

This is really stupid because I forget which is which, but when you change your icon, it shouldn't change all of them. It should only be there for the posts you made with it. Anyone agree? It would be cool like the signatures to be able to go back and see your old icons stuff.

no....then there would be too many random little icons sitting around the server to keep track of and would increase the number of images needed to load on every thread

Also it wouldn't be consistent. The nice part about the current situation with the icons is that you can go back into older threads and recognize a post by someone because they have the same icon. It could be chaotic. Not too mention every single icon that someone change is going to have to be saved on the server (needs more space), bandwidth (as macmahoon pointed out), and recoding of the site.

Putting the tags for that in the php would cause everbody's post to have to point to a specific location of the current icon at the time.. For each and every post. Which means the pages would take longer to load and be slower.

I don't see any pros of doing it. But maybe share some reasons why it would be good?

i agree with macmahoon. i think the icons should be able to be bigger. not a larger size, but a better quality picture.

the site is set to display your icon, like mine is newschoolers.com/blahblah/ghostsofthestreets.gif,to make it static would be friggin hard

i know that didn't make any sense but yea

i have an icon i want to use, but at 50x50 it is still too big. it is around 4000 bytes and it needs to be half that.

Download FastStone Photo resizer. You can change that pic to a 50x50

you can try compressing it. But if it's an animated icon with more than 3 frames (unless only a small area is moving in it.. like a skier doing a rail) then you may have a real hard time getting it under 1.94k.

It's not an easy task. But try using as little colors as possible.

that one.

thanks guys. ghostdragon's wasn't working for me, but drdre's did. i think it was because drdres was jpeg and ghostdragon's was gif. i don't know. thanks though.

The one I made works just fine, I just checked it out. Not sure why it wasn't working for you, I've made a few icons in the past.

Anyways, looks like you got a new one.
