Icelantics “stripped” mounting

Alright so my buddy just sends me this text. He’s a boarder and wanted to get into skiing so he goes all out and gets nomad 95s. This years model. Apparently the tech stripped the screw holes when trying to mount? It sounds to me like the tech just fucked up his skis, but I don’t know exactly what he’s even saying because I don’t know much about mounting. Tech is blaming the skis. Anyone hear of this happening to icelantics? Can anyone provide any insight here and does he go to icelantic for the warranty replacement or does the shop need to replace?

Thanks for any help

I bet the tech used a drill to attach the bindings and had the torque all the way up (like you do for drilling holes). You have to put the torque down so the drill stops at a low resistance. Then you do the rest by hand. To strip 8 holes is ridiculous. I have drilled into Neversummer made skis. It’s not the skis.

8 stripped screws is insane if they are new screw holes, even if they were being mounted in existing holes this is fucking weird. I've re-mounted telemark bindings that can impart quite a lot of force in existing screw holes for 3 mounts with no issue. I suspect the tech is just hamfisted or pre-drilled with the wrong size hole or something, but to strip through all 8 would make even the most barbarically strongk person start to question their technique part of the way through.

Mounting skis is not an especially difficult process for anyone who has any sort of technical capability. In a shop setting a tech has access to all of the proper tools to make sure the process goes smoothly and consistently for hundreds of skis in the passing of a season.

If it's actually a problem with the ski it should be covered by Icelantic and handled by the shop, even if they don't carry Icelantic a good shop will work to make it right, especially on a new ski. If it's the mistake of the tech the shop is still liable to replace the ski. I've had a shop fuck up a thrice-mounted 4 year old ski beyond repair and still made an effort to get me a suitable new replacement.

I had this happen a long time ago with a pair of surfaces, got them replaced from surface without question. Not sure if icelantic would do the same tho. It might be worth having the shop attempt to helicoil all the stripped holes if the skis are fucked anyways

Also, I dunno the exact timeline of this, but if the tech was expecting to have the work done by 12, they are not ready to ski by 12. Wood glue should have 24 hours at room temperature before high stress is applied as a rule of thumb.

That's a bit of a red flag right there.

i was gunna say this but didn’t wanna sound like a dumbass. i thought maybe it was possible to use some glue that set more quickly than 24 hrs but ya i thought the accepted rule of thumb was a you can ski the same day they are mounted

OP the icelantic warranty team is extremely professional, helpful, and understanding. If this is a ski issue and not a tech issue, they will help you out. Even if it’s not a ski issue, they might be able to help, or at least contact the shop from a position of knowledge and expertise to suggest that it was the tech and not the ski. The tech said to reach out to icelantic, and i would do that, not because they should be on the hook to warranty them, but because i would trust the people at icelantic more than a random ski tech

So glad I posted this. My buddy was originally trying to defend the tech I was like dude I don’t think you can strip 8 drill holes in Icelantics without being considered a full on dumbass. Like why did he keep going? Anyway. He’s sending them back to icelantic hoping for a refund and if not I said I would go back to the shop with him and ask for a refund. I know demanding isn’t gonna get us anywhere and we need to act cool but ultimately got fucked by another shitty tech. Vet your techs folks. So glad I escaped with a clean mount on my nomad 105s a year ago. Thanks for the subject matter expertise on this one NS community

This is helpful I was hoping that icelantic might be willing to tell the shop they are at fault (if that’s the case) so it doesn’t turn into an argument between us and the shop. I have spoken to their customer service folks before and they are always on the money. I’m sure they will help us through it.

Hell ya believe me I’ve been on nomad 105s for the past year best ski I’ve ever ripped.

Yeah the tech had the torque too high, that’s all. To strip all 8 of them is pretty unusual. It definitely may be a case of a bad core but NS is pretty damn consistent and this is the first time I’ve heard of anything like this happening…. Loon also has good technicians, unlike a lot of other mountains in the East.

For sure. Was actually a shop down the road so not actually the Loon mountain shop but I digress..

Oh ok. Well keep us updated I’m interested to see how this plays out being a tech myself

Just wanted to drop an update in here. My buddy sent the stripped skis back to icelantic and they are just cutting the shop out and giving him a pair of the 22-23 models. Not sure if they determined shop or ski fault as they didn’t tell him. But he’s stoked and already got them mounted up proper this time. Thanks again for everyone’s help

you mount those nomads at recommended?

Mounted -2 from true center. Absolutely love where they are for occasional park and I do ski switch a lot around the mountain and they are great carvers. Could easily go back at least a few cm if you are more out west in pow. I ski east coast.

Yeah wack. after the first one stripped they should've taken it easy. Icelandic's are like that but bent Chetler 100s are worse. even more so because atomic recommends a 4.1mm diameter bit. They could've done that too, used a bit that was oversized

just order some Snoli 3.5/4.1x9 step bits. The best!

I will keep that in mind thanks! But fr tho bent 100s will strip at like 12 torque if you use a 4.1

Bent Chetlers 100s are so fragile. Foon and Priors (or any custom/handmade ski) tend to be on the softer side and are super easy to strip. You gotta be a meat head to strip all 8 holes.
