so im thinking about getting a laptop for school next year and was told to take a serious look at ibooks.

ive only ever used a mac once for about a hour to edit a small video for class and i loved how easy the programs were to use.

but if i get a mac is it gonna be a bitch to get programs for and stuff like that?

for example if i start typing a essay in microsoft word will i be able to save it and start typing the rest of it with a mac?

or does one not work with the other?

its just small things like that im worried about, i want to get a mac for video and picture editing and such but i also would like to be able to use it for downloading songs, talk on msn, type up school work etc.

if anyone knows a little about them that would be great

^No, don't do that. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they charge so much more for powerbooks. They do not appear to have any serious advantages over the Ibook, which is a stellar machine at a reasonable price. You won't have any issues getting software, unless you mean games.

man i wouldent spend to much money on a mac i used them for years and i dont find them good at all just save some hassle and get a computer with a microsoft os ...every one in the world uses it so save time and money .. plus it's not 100% compatible some things are and some are not

im not really worried about the cost of a laptop or anything cause its paid for

i just wanted to know how compatable a microsoft computer would be with a mac and vice versa, word processing is the big one.

to answer some of your question...macs and pcs are becoming more and more compatible...apple and microsoft are set to release microsoft office 2004 for mac...i'm assuming that pc word files will transfer to a mac if you are using office for on both a mac and a pc...apple is def trying to make their machines less exclusive and easier to use with other computers...you can network pcs and mac together and fileshare so you should be fine...the ibook is a great laptop for the money and the powerbook is a rad machine also...i'm actually deciding whether to get a powerbook to take to school in the fall in place of my dell 2650...any thoughts?

the setup i think i'd get is this...12-inch powerbook, 60 gig hard drive, 512 ram...no superdrive just the combo-drive...i'm using it mostly for school (papers, research, internet, email, digital photo and music)...i just want an all aroung soild laptop that isn't going to crap out on me and i hear macs hold up better than pcs.....also, does typing on a mac feel any different than typing on a pc?

i'm not trying to overtake your thread, but i figured i'd throw in some questions without starting a new thread...thanks

 
^No, essentially the same, no difference aside from what you'd notice between a toshiba and a dell laptop (every computer has a different keyboard). And MS word docs are cross-platform compatible. If you ever have issues, you can A) copy and paste the text into an email and send it to yourself or B) save the file in rich text format, which PCs and Macs can both read. But i never have issues with transfering word files between Mac and PC. I have had difficulties with Corel Wordperfect format though, if you use that. Big bonus, you don't have to worry about viruses at all, and if you plan to be online at a school, they're a serious problem. The wireless network at my U results in infected computers all the time; the second you log on, if you don't have a firewall, a virus detection system, and virus definitions updated as recently as that day, you're screwed. They do hold up better than PCs as far as the technology deterioration is concerned, but they'll break just as easily as some PCs if you're too rough with them physically... dropping laptops is never a good plan.

it is true about them holding up better ...macs tend not to crash as much and if they do every thing is saved where on a pc it's all lost 90% of the time

dude wait till the g5 powerbooks get out because i can guarentee you they will be waaaay faster and cost the same so i would wait a lil while if i were you. and yes macs do evrything that pcs do in fact i have microsft office for my mac and i use pc aswell and go back and forth

 
g4 ibooks are tight. powerbooks are sweet, but if you're not rich, they're impractical for students. i'd suggest looking on smalldog.com for any display models, it'll knock off a few hundred bucks for a new machine. i hvae a g3 ibook and it works wonders, with an upgrade to 640 meg, i can run multiple editting programs with panther, never once crashed. however i have melted the logic board SO BUY APPLE CARE, they'll replace the computer at will.

 
G5 powerbooks will be INSANE. people are estimating this summer, yet mac is being safe saying in a year. they're going to be carbon fiber. tiight.

I've been lusting after a new mac for a while. Thankfully, I can see that Apple isn't going to stop dropping awesome product on us anytime soon, so I can wait a little.

damn, apple is so nice...that pad looks really clean and the new imac looks pretty tight too...i don't think i can wait til january though...so i may just have to get a g4 powerbook...it's a good investment right?

 
We hope so, jib this... they're having a hell of a time cooling these high-power processors. G4 Powerbooks get really hot, and it's a major issue to keep the G5 running without melting half the machine in the process. this is why I think the next machines are going to take time.

wait...the G4s have a hard time staying cool?...what's the problem?...is the powerbook not the comp i want if my comp at school will be on all the time...?

 
personally, I don't know why anyone would spend that kind of money on a powerbook when the Ibook has the same specs. The only visible differences are the frame and ram expandability (powerbooks can go up to a gig, Ibooks 640 megs). They run a bit faster with the 512 L2 cache, but it's not nearly enough of a difference to warrant the price increase. And yeah, they get very hot. The Ibooks do too, though less so for some reason; might be the nonmetal case. But the processor is a hot one... if you were to upgrade a G3 lombard to a g4, you would run the risk of melting the motherboard. Not that new pcs have it much better:

i have my 1.25ghz powerbook g4 on for most the day every day and havent had problems with it. it does get extremely hot, but you can get a stand to prop it up on so there is air circulating under it and helps cool it down. pretty much any software you want you can get on macs - ms office adobe cs studio are two big groups of software. most high end games are coming out on mac now and if you do need to run a windows application for some reason, you can just install virtual pc and run 98/2000/xp on your mac

^ such a lie, they are not. They are so much more free, most people i know complain that they don' have the right click mouse button, but it doesn't matter, wait for the g5, holy shit those are sick.

I have a g4 ibook, personally the powerbook is just wasted, the only thing i can think of off the top of my head is they max out on ram at like 1.5 gig, and you don't need that. Go for the ibook unless you have excess with nothing else to spend, then powerbook. PC's are too damn constricing and the errors and stuff are so stupid, too many hidden files.

how is editing on ibooks? it seems like an external hard drive would be worth it to store footage, but how is the performance while editing?
