I want some fatties

Well, it looks like I'll be buying some fatties to ski on next year, now that I just got some scholarship money (wooohoo!). Question is... what to buy?

I love huge skis. I'm 5'11, 150 lb, and ski about 20% park, 30% all mt, and BC or pow stashes whenever I can. I already have Maden AK's... and those quickly went from my pow skis to my everyday ski. So I'm feeling something bigger.

Rockered is def of interest to me. I love the new Hellbents, but as I already have some wide ass K2's, I'm looking around at some other ski companies I've never skied before. Line's EP Pro model is at the top of my list as of now, both for it being almost 130 underfoot and the "early rise in tips and tail".

But help me open my eyes. I'm looking for a huge twin tip powder ski that will be much different in flex and ride than my Madens. I still want to be able to land and ride out of cliffs, but the softness of Line's model is really appealing to me, just because I love dinking around off shit. Anyone got any other companies or models I should look at before I start looking for a deal on some skis?

prophet 130's... stiffer, burlier. more for charging, not really soft like you mentioned... but you DO already have some madn's, so getting something like the prophet would mix up your wide ski quiver a bit. just me 2 cents.

also check out surface live lifes. sexy, i havn't ridden them, but i've only heard good things about 'em.

I was considering those too, but i want something that will really mix up my quiver. EP's seem to be just like 130's, but rockered and tons more flex.

JP's are too close to what I have already, and Bacons are only a bit wider. I'm looking for something crazy...

Anyone have some smaller companies for me to look at? Needs to be twin tip, so igneous is out, as are kingwoods...

yea but aren't maidens kinda soft jibbin skis... so a chargin fatty like the prophet would certainly mix up your quiver... perhaps i'm mistaken about the maidens though I've only flexed them in a shop, but they seemed real soft. ep pros sound damn fun too though, just sayin i think prophets would make for a more diverse quiver.

Madens are really soft, but I kinda like soft skis anyways. I agree that Prophet 130's would round out my quiver better in stiffness, but EP's just look like so much fun. Plus, they would fill the rockered quota... and if i get them, then I'd only need a ARG to fill the stiff and rev sidecut gap!

BTW, Kingwoods are out b/c of price, I just realized it looks like I said they arent twins, which is ridiculous.

i will say, i have never ridden a rockered ski before.

now with that being said, if you want a charging ski, i think your going the wrong direction. all those rockered skis are made for bottomless pow. and how often do you get that? like 5 days a year. if you want a ski for 5 days a year, by all means go for it. but i figured a lot out about skiing steep shit this year, and one of the main things is charging on soft skis is hard. personally. i would got for mantra's or something. i have ant's and thats what im getting next year.

I live in Seattle, and bottomless pow actually happens more than you would think... but yeah, I'll probably use my Madens for variable snow and hardpack days, and probably take out my new ones for only 10 or so days next season (hopefully more if the snow allows!).

Take a look at the:

Moment Commi 136 underfoot

Lib-tech NAS powder 117 underfoot

If money isn't a concern:

Birdos puder luder 126 underfoot

If you really want something from a small company you could talk to iggyskier about building you a pair of on3p's. He's building one ski that's 191cm long and 113 underfoot.

Toooooo narrow. I use Madens in the park. Thanks for the advice, Moment is interesting, as are the new on3p's....

I know you say the Maden is like the Bacon, but I can tell you that Bacons are COMPLETELy different. I would highly recommend them. EP Pros are even softer. I've never ridden them so I can't give the recommendation, but my Bacon's ('08 baby!) are heavenly

Ounds liek you have a pretty darn good idea about abotu what you're looking for, and honestly, the EP pros seem to fit perfectly.

I need something over 125 at the waist for sure. And if I rockering my Madens... well, they're my only good normal ski then. I think I'm either going to go for the Pollards or maybe a ON3P prototype. We'll see, I still got some time to think.

This is my dream setup however;

Ice - Libtech NAS

Regular days - Maden

Deep Pow - EP Pro's or ON3P

Big Faces (possibly AT setup) - Igneous or Kingwoods

I'll fill the last gap once I both get the money and the ability to get to those types of places. For now, I'm trying to fill the deep pow slot.

come on chris, washington actually gets snow, not like colorado and their lying about snowfall...cough...vail...cough.

agreed. I skied vail and all of the front range resorts from the time I was 3-18. Moved to WA 3 years ago, and I ski SO much more powder in WA than CO. It is ridiculous. Not only is there pow more often, but it is so much deeper.

In CO, 6" is a pow day. People are even stoked for 3-4". Up here, I find myself constantly at least mid-thigh deep, often waist deep. It maybe a heavier, but whatever. WA fucking rocks.

If you want a soft playfull ski, EP Pros or Hellbents would be the top 2 on the list. ARGs are stiff, and are playfull in deep stuff, but not at all anywhere else. Praxis are stiffer too, and would ski similarly to the ARGs. If Kingswoods are out cause of price, so are Capitals and DP skis.

After the non-traditional ones, you're looking at Sumos, Big Daddies, Prophet 130s, and the 207. Prophets are probably the only one out of there that could be considered close to playfull, perhaps along with a 175 sumo.

Currently on3p doesn't make a mega fatty, and will probably be a little while before Scott gets one out. The regular fatties are in the 113mm range and thats probably not a big enough difference from your Made'ns.

Best bet is buy NPM's Hellbents.

Haha, I know, but I already have Madens, and I'd like to try an offering from a smaller company. Honestly, the only reason I havent decided 100% to go with EP Pro's is because they're made by Line.

And besides, Nicks getting some much better offers than I could come up with.

First off.....if you have any questions of Kingswood, Capital, and Igneous, let me know, cause I've owned them all. It sucks that Kwood raised their prices, cause last year they were some amazing skis at amazing prices.

Igneous is just amazing. I'm on pair 4.....and are the only skis I've kept while doing to ON3P thing.

I dunno what your timeline is. If you go with something with a rocker tip, you really don't need to go super super fat IMO. I am making one ski that is 145/115/138 and was hoping it would be like the SFB. 145mm tip with rocker is going to float extremely well.

Eventually I am going to design a fatter ski. My computer is still fucking broken....thanks dell, so I've been waiting to get some new designs on there. But there will probably be something around 130 in the waist....plus a reverse camber.

One thing to note: do you really need a different ski for powder and big faces? They really are the same thing, IMO. And if you want to get an AT ski, you could always just mount a DUKE on the skis. I think if you were going to get two different pow skis, get one fatty traditions shape and one reverse camber. Mount the fatty traditional AT. Have you been on the ARG, spats, etc yet?

I have not, I really wanted to demo some this year but I was on vacation when my area had them. The AT setup is a long shot, probably for next spring or something. I dunno what I'll buy, but as I'd like a really soft pow ski and a pretty stiff one eventually. I'd love to also get into some reverse camber and rockered, so theres a lot of combinations I could do: ARG now, ON3P rocker later; EP Pro now, Igneous or Kwoods later... its kinda endless. Uhg, lots to think about!

probly not big enough for you but this ski is so fuckin sick...

Get some ARGs. They are soooo sick in powdurr, I was able to ride away from a switch-backseat powder landing, and they were mounted like core center too!

I saw Sage Cattabriga skiin on these at Snowbird off the tram and they looked nasty - he ripped
