I want slalom skis

Like real ones, but not FIS real. My brother just bought Volkl racetiger SL's. I'm going to guess that most of these high end skis are similar. Like the redster SL, rossi hero SL, and the other brands equivalents. Should I just get what I can find? Only thing I heard was that the Head ones are the stiffest out of all of them. I'm also sort of worried about damaging the rod on the atomics, and about it's longevity.

So a consumer SL ski?

Atomic S9, Head World Cup Rebels I.SL, Stockli Laser SL, etc. are all great options.

Almost every brand should have a consumer SL ski that more or less will ski the same.

Just keep them sharp.

I don't think you'll need to worry about breaking that rod on the Atomics. Those things are going to be able to withstand more force than you can likely put out. They're used on WC GS skis.

Wasn't concerned about breaking it skiing, more when it's not being skied, liek putting them in a car and stuff. I'd obviously be careful but you know, I want them to last.

But yeah, I want a consumer SL ski, are they all similar enough?

Eh I doubt you’ll even have to worry about that. I imagine they’re replaceable too if need be. Onenerdykid will probably know.

With regards to how they ski? Yeah unless you’ve skied a lot of race skis/skis of this caliber you won’t notice the difference. You’re more apt to notice a difference in tune than the ski construction itself. I haven’t skied any of these since I prefer the true FIS skis but I haven’t heard of any one being better than another. If you want a ski that can snap and carve you can’t really go wrong. As I said. Keep em sharp and you’ll have fun.

Go for it, they're fun for those pure ice kinda days. I have Volkl Racetigers. Before I had them I tried some Salomons and I hated them. They chattered like crazy. When I tried the Volkls I was sold. They were more stable (and heavier) So I felt more comfortable on them. I haven't used them in a couple years because I discovered how much fun twin tips are :)

I'm 5'5" and 120lbs, so I feel like the FIS size is too big for me.

If you're that size, a junior ski or a female ski isn't a crazy idea. Every brand will have a U-16 ski that's probably 152cm or a women ski that is 155-157.

Check em out.

That chatter could have been a bad tune. Dull tips and tails.

No matter which brand, all the top brands are good if properly tuned.

Other than that, they possibly could have just been torsionally spent. AKA used up. That's rare though.

Or maybe all of these tip vibration reduction systems actually work well.

I was under the impression that the non-FIS models are just different sizes, but otherwise have the same construction as the FIS ones. Is that not the case?

My understanding is no.

FIS skis are going to likely require "better" materials as they're going to be experiencing more strain than a consumer ski.

They probably were. They were 8 years old and well used. My Volkls are also about 7 or 8 years old but very lightly used.

I thought FIS skis were also stiffer and had some slightly different sidecuts.

Yes, they probably have a different sidecut as well. They're a much friendlier ski when it comes down to it.

It's like comparing a WRX to an STI. Both are high-performance vehicles but the STI is just going to outclass the other across the board.

The Redster S9 is our single most sold ski- I haven't heard of the Servotec rod getting damaged, even in rental fleets where everything is destroyed.

FIS slalom skis are a much beefier/powerful construction in a super short length (165cm) and 10 or 12m radius that will fully work you. And there is no sidecut limitations on FIS SL skis, just length.

I would highly recommend going with the commercial S9 or even the X9. The X9 has a little less sidecut (a radius still in the mid teens) but has a real FIS construction. It's far easier to ski than a FIS slalom ski (and more fun) given its radius but still has insane amount of power due to its construction. If you can afford it, it's a serious blast.

Eh, I want the full experience so I'd probably go with the S9. What do you think about size? I guess the 156 is the way to go if I'm 165cm and ~55kg. My brother, who is the same size as me has Volkl racetiger SL's in 160, he tried 165 Redster S9 SL's and thought they were a bit long.

The other thing is finding some, seems like shops only have these at the beginning of seasons.

I would personally go for the 165 (that's the men's FIS length) but it also comes in a 159 (women usually use 155-159).

Either would be fun, maybe go 159 if you want to be carving up a storm.

i'll sell you a one year old pair of fis 157 atomics, never been skied, with consumer (brand new, but no longer indemnified) bindings. The bindings are the same as the current 12 din race bindings, just not red, so no longer indemnified. $500.
