OP i agree that no book ive ever read has had me as engrossed as harry potter. I remember I read the whole last book in one day. But yea Eragon is an unreal series ^^.

I'm really interested to hear your reasoning as to why he's not a great writer.

Have you read the Lost Symbol? Inferno? Great stories. Great writing.

Please, lets hear it.

I've only read A&D, DaVinci Code and Deception point. I thought the stories were OK (although repetitive). He is just not a very good writer.

Dan Brown tends to tell, and not show...

His stories are engrossing though, I won't lie, I did enjoy reading his books. His novels just feel like Hollywood screenplays, written purely for passive entertainment, as opposed to being written in a manner that envelops the reader in an interactive experience.

His writing style is engaging as fuck. It keeps you reading - the goal of any good writer.

I'm curious to see what you find to be a desirable writing style.

He's a good plotter, not a good writer. His stories are engaging, but not because of his sense of style as a writer.

"Outside his window, hidden in the shadows of the Via Torregalli, a powerfully built woman effortlessly unstraddled her BMW motorcycle and advanced with the intensity of a panther stalking its prey."

Sounds like something you'd read in an intro to fiction writing class.

After reading most of the replies in this thread I can honestly say I'm a little bit scared for the future of our generation

Read a few Vonnegut books for English. I thoroughly enjoyed them. I also read a Vietnam book before the summer that was un fucking real. Didn't expect it to be that crazy. "The things they carried" is what it's called.

My favorite fantasy series1. AsoIF

2. Dragonlance Chronicles

3. HP

4. The Sword of Truth

5. The Wheel of Time

6. LotR, although I'm more into the movies (the books are pretty slow)

Just finished reading Joe Abercrombie's first series The First Law and it was pretty good.

finished a game of thrones the other night and now i'm already pretty into a clash of kings. think i found my new jam; awwwww yeah

Ha ha ha. Absolutely this or any of the other kazilion books he's written. They are simple and predictive, but still awesome.

Also check out (takes a bit to get into it, but an incredible story. A fictional, but supposedly pretty accurate, account a true story):

And I'm sure this was said many times, it should have been, but I didn't read the thread so my all time favourite series would be all the Enderverse books from Orson Scott Card. Ender's game was my favourite book by a long shot and I finished it in one sitting, the next day I read Ender's shadow from cover to cover and somehow it was even better. The rest aren't as mind blowing as the first but are amazing reads nonetheless.
