I swear to god im not on any drugs

you would just float in the center as the forces acting on you would equal out.
this thread is stupid

I would think that since gravity is working towards earth once you got to the center you would like flatten on impact of "hitting" gravity on the other side...idk tho haha

only a mile. and that was the american.

the canadian hit a dude from 1 3/4ths miles, but that was without the wall. and he was at like 10000 feet.

Very. Guy having to aim above his target so much that the bullet practically came down on the TOP of his head. Guys are nuts.

if you make it to the end of the tunnel chuck norris is waiting to kick you back to the other side of the world. It's chuck's tunnel. he bored it with a single round house kick.

lets say if you had a mass of 70 KG, on the surface of earth with gravity having an acceleration of approximately 10 m/s/s then your net force would be 700 N towards the centre of the earth,

BUT if you were 1 metre away from the "centre" of the earth then you would have a gravitational acceleration of approximately 398866000000000. m/s/s and a downwards force of 27920620000000000 N.

effectively you would weigh 39886600000000 as much a metre away from the centre of the earth than you do on the surface.

SPARKNOTES: you were right :)

may i ask you at what direction gravity is pulling you when you're hypothetically in the middle of the earth ?
keep in mind that you work with vectors and you need to consider the resulting gravitational force.....

in other words, i believe that because the gravitational force at the center of the earth pulls equally hard in all directions, you would in fact be weightlless .....

you would be stuck in the center of the earth, because that is where the gravitational pull from both ends of the globe meet, making it neutral in the center, but since both sides are pushing down, you will be stuck in the middle..

thats fucking awesome

i had a science teacher in 8th grade that had this exact question on a test.

what if you hit the walls of the hole though?

If the tube is vacuumed/devoid of air I don't think there is a way you can gets moved around in the tube as you fall to start moving towards the walls.

i beleive this was once brought up in rugrats when phil and lil were diggin a hole to china. also in serveral other cartoons, I beleive you would simply get dropped in the midde eventually and maybe with 20ft-50ft of falling up and down with a weak source of gravity. the earth also rotates so at some point you would prob be able to chill standing on the side of the center of theearth, although gravity wouldn't be a the same sort it is now because of the breaking down of the ozone yadda yadda ya is anyone still reading this so if you were on that chance now, the earth's core would be dead with hopefully the same form of gravity force. In conclussion I have no conclussion

actually i thought of something. If the earth rotates while you were going down that fall, god it would prob take like a day i would imagine it would not be a direct fall down, you would bang against the sides of the wall in a slow spiral and die before you would make it to the middle

I was talking in a regular tube in a laboratory type tube thing.

The type of tube where you can drop a rock and a feather at the same time and test to see if they fall at the same rate.

well that would be really fucked up because the center of the earth is where the gravitational pull is coming from i think. so would u even fall or would shit just hit the fan as soon as the hole appeared?

i used equations relating to planetary motion and made the radus from the centre of earth or be 1 metre instead of something a satellite would experience at about 6394500m. so it is the gravitational pull (acceleration) x mass = the force at that point (N)

speak for yourself

if you neglect air resistance, you would accellerate until you reached the center of the earth then you would decellerate until you reached the other side of the earth and you would reach that surface and stop then you would fall back the other direction. Like a pendulum.

no dude, if you reason like that you're basically assuming all the mass of the earth is located in one point, in the center of the earth.
this way of thinking is quite correct for calculating gravitational pull on objects far away, such as satellites or meteors, etc.... where you can see the earth as a point-mass
however if you're calculating the gravitational pull for this problem you must see the earth as a spherical mass with a certain radius instead of a point-mass....
So according to you way of thinking you say, the closer you approach the center of the earth (which you see as a center of all mass) your gravitational pull will increase.... this is correct, for your way of thinkingbut unfortunately the earths mass isn't all concentrated in one point, its a sphere, so in human words, once you go below the surface, the mass below you will keep pulling you towards the center, however the mass above you will pull you back up... still following ?
so when you reach the center of the earth you can say that in any direction, above, below, left, right, etc...you have an equal ammount of "earth" thats gonna result in equal ammounts of gravitational pull in that direction.
since this gravitational pull is equally large in all directions, your resulting gravitational pull will be zero.(gravity force pulling you down is cancelled by the force pulling you up, gravity force pulling you left is canceled out by the force pulling you right, etc....)
i hope this was clear enough, english isn't my main language and explaining stuff like this isn't easy to begin with :)

We watched a video about it. Theoretically if death was not a factor and you couldn't be crushed once you got there you would stop falling and just float there and there would be no direction.

You should probably talk to Gandalf, he fell to the center of the earth...only problem was that there was a huge mountain down there.

ahh damn, yer of course that makes perfect sense,

very clear explaining dude, now it becomes apparent that indeed you must be GOD. (+k for an omniscient being)

you know what would suck?

If the hole was not drilled through the center, but like 100 feet off, then you would scrape along the side at terminal velocity, and then continue upwards and then back, pendulum style until you were ground into a smoothie.
