I SHATTERED my left clavical on friday

I was skiing at Keystone friday-

-dust on crust

-extreme flat light

-little icy

I was hauling ass and I was cut off by two tourists one some run between north peak and outback. I was forced to go hard left into what looked like it could be soft snow. It was huge bumps. After maybe 100 feet I double ejected and went airborn. I was in the air for a very long time. I came down directly onto the top of my left shoulder (feet above head) which snapped my left clavical and then I tumbled over and over for a few hundred more feet, breaking it several more times. I came to a stop and was up walking around for a minute, i was going to try to ski or walk down but then I collapsed to my knees and started to feel the pain. Luckily I was with a girl I've been dating and she was there for me for the 15 minute wait for ski patrol and the 45 minute tobogan/snowmobile ride and then in the hosbital. She also took care of me at her place for a few days. 2 doctors have said surgery is a must, but today I went to another specialist and she said no. 1 more opinion tomorrow and I will know for sure. I'm all kinds of fucked up right now on vicadin and valium.

oh yeah, fyi. I broke my right clavical about 7 years ago. This time with my left it is so much worse bc it is so many breaks and displaced pieces.

damn, those can be the most painful breaks ever. I had one too, snapped it in two. If I were you id just do surgery, get that shit together otherwise its all lumpy, hehe. Good luck with whatever happens.

Ahhh fuck .. that kicks the shit out of my break.. dude get some good video games and kick it on vicaden for a few weeks then you can move, i was skiing after a month but mine wasnt so severe.

Dude that is def. surgery because in no way is that going to heal properly. Oh and I broke my right one twice within two months.

dude that really sucks. for one thing your you broke your clavicle and can't ski for the rest of the season but secondly you got it because of Tourists, not like some sweet thing like, you were trying a double backflip or something.

Yeah I would definitely just get the surgery. There is ABSOLUTELY no way that those bones are going to fall into place, especially the fucked up positin that they are in right now. I would go with the surgery and just get it done, otherwise that shit will just bug you for the rest of your life.

A girl I was on a trip with saturday broke her arm and dislocated her elbow. first run she comes up to an icy spot, slows down then just falls backwards and pop it comes out.

fgoing to another doctor soon for one last opinion. the bones have shifted into a better position, hard to describe w/ out posting new x rays. we will see what is going to happen today.

thats really wierd i just poped my shoulder out of socket this weekend, and watched a pro snowboarder die soo if feel lucky but it still sucks go with the surgury

oh well at least you are not goin to miss much of the season, and summers coming up, so you will be fine by then. Until then just chill hardcore

It looks like surgery is a have-to, I mean if they don't operate what's going to happen with the freefloating bone?

i have 2 breaks, it wasnt AS bad as that, but there is a huge lump where it broke still...because its not all the way healed

ya i didnt get surgey on mine, and now i have a huge bump on my shoulder from where the bones healed and a year later i still cant sleep on my right side cause it bothers me.

man.. sorry to hear but seriously? do you think you wont need surgery? your bones are drifting around in your shoulder and you think they are going to go back into place and heal?

Yeah I have the same deal. I'm still having problems with it healing (makes cracking noises sometimes) and my right shoulder is fucked.

i broke my collar bone a month ago then just broke my wrist on sunday...this season wasnt the most fun for me...however seeing the break in ur collar bone makes me feel like a little girl

saw the football team ortho here at cu today for a final opinion today. no surgery! -my muscle spasms have miraculously flattened out everything and placed the floating piece is now in a "bridge" position. The doctor said he will have me skiing again for some beach party action at A Basin in maybe 8 weeks. I'm still really fucked up on vicadin and it still hurts, but I've got a 2 week supply of pain killers. I'll be getting back to class in the next week.

ugh man, thank god for vicadin...i mean thats amazing that your muscle spasms put it back into place, but fucking a wihtout sic that probably owuld have been the worst shit ever

***********UPDATE*****************

Went for a follow up today. I'm having surgery on thursday. Now that the swelling has gone down the doctors were able to see the full extent of the damage and they realized it was a lot worse than they originally thought. The jaged bone that is detached has been tearing apart the thin muscle that covers the collar bone and almost came through the skin a few times. It has been bleeding internally and I am bruised all the way down my pec from the bleeding. It is all pretty gruesome. 3 different surgeons chose to wait at first. AHHHH!!! This has been such a hassle. So when it is all said and done I'll have some sort of titanium collar bone. Oh, and I was supposed to go to Jamaica to help with hurricane relief for spring break (next week), well thats not gonna happen either...such a bummer.

when i broke mine, a piece came through the skin and i had to have surgery on it. it's VERY weird being able to touch your bone. the medial part of the break ended up shifting up into my neck a bit but i was able to move it back down before getting into the sled (that just about made the patroller throw up) and another piece spiralled off and ended up pointing straight up (that was the piece that came through the skin). breaking your clavical sucks because every time you breathe you can feel it shift a little. bone grinding on bone made me shiver every time.

hope you have a good recovery, man.

yah dude, get well soon for sure.

i just broke my right clavicle on sunday right at the joint. hurts like a bitch, but nothing compared to yours. i only have to wear a sling for 6-8 weeks or else i need surgery.

Wow I can't believe the ressurection. I ended up getting surgery, and so far my medical bills are at about $25,000, probably more but I haven't gotten a bill for all the physical therapy. I need another surgery in a year, and by the time it is all done the medical bills will be roughly $40,000. I really can't believe it has cost this much. Thank God I have insurrance. My parents have fronted the bill fot what insurance hasn't covered, which is about $4000-$6000.

I don't know how I feel about sueing really. I was skiing fast for conditions, and "technically" the downhill skier has the right of way, even if they are really bad at skiing and did ski infront of me at the last second... I really don't have to much anger towards the people. I can't live like that.

...so here is what it looks like now.

I'm planning on skiing in 4 weeks (my doctor said I could ski in 4 weeks today actually), which will be 10 weeks post accident. Yay for having a pass to A Basin.

dude i fractred mine in 2 places second to last day the resrot was gonna close up here in Steamboat on a gap jump over our QP. Sucks! Had a few more comps to go to, and trip to the west! Oh well could have been much worse like the neck or something. Looks like yours was worse than mine, but hey I feel your pain! thank god for pain killer!
