serial codes dont have anything to do with it. Pain in the ass though... make sure you take off auto-update, and you have to manually drag files in.

^probably...i heard somewhere that if you try to do some file transfering thing (maybe ipod to ipod or ipod TO computer, im not sure) it would erase all your songs.....anyone know if this is true or not?

Freeskier204, if you have your iPod set to Automatically sync, it exchanges songs on any given computer. If you plug it into a computer and it doesnt have any songs in the iTunes library, it will transfer the 0 new songs to your iPod, erasing the rest of your iPod library. Or, just set it to Manually Manage Songs, and you won't have a problem. You can still hook it up to another computer and there will not be a problem.

And no, if you have a mini, it does not have the same software as a 20gig. Both the iPod Mini and the 3rd Generation iPods came with software version 2.2 on them, but the new 4th gen (grey click wheel) iPods do not have the same software.

So when I upload the softwear on my comp, I shouldn't register it?

Yes you can, but if for some reason you cant, dont directly allow contact with the ipod and your friends itunes, then just drag the songs onto the desktop and put them into the ipod icon on the desktop, then bring them home, put them on YOUR desktop, and drag them into YOUR itunes, then put them into your ipod. Its a bit hasslesome, but thats your option if it doesnt work.
