for english we had to read Catcher in the Rye, and I'm pretty sure it's the best book I've ever read.

I feel bad for Holden, because he's always so lonely and depressed. the scenes with holden and phoebe reminded me of myself and my brother so much. and I finished the book, put it down, and started crying. I'm not quite sure why, but the last page made me really depressed...just the fact that he's missing people he used to hate. so yeah, probably my favorite book.....I laughed and cried while reading it!

I used to read alot but completly dropped it a few years ago. Its summer and i really want to start reading again so does anyone have any more good books to recommend?

catcher in the rye is a great read for sure. although i almost wish i had read it on my own instead of for english class...its more of an introspective book, than a book which requires evaluation and open discussion. my two cents.

Damn, I was going to shoot you down and say books are crap, go be a librarian... but The Catcher in the Rye was my fav book in highschool. Maybe cuz I'm delusional like Holden and could relate? Although I'm not at all obsessed with children so, hmmm, let's hear Michael Jackson's take on this, shall we?

^ ya. same with me. i read Raisin In the Sun this past week.. i swear to god it was the first book ive read all year. so good. it was a play tho...

i also enjoy reading books about skiing/ snowboarding. like autobiographies of pros and stuff. theyre interesting

"Over time, most people experience life involving love, suffering, passion, and an unspeakable drive for something new . . . for me there's skiing, nothing more nothing less and it encompasses everything, every day I'm out there." ~Pep Fujas

I've thought about this and I think a lot of what I like about catcher is the ending. and I've had so many people tell me they hated the ending. but I like it...it leaves you thinking and wondering what holden will do next, and if he ever will apply himself in school.

and whoever said it wasn't exciting...well, I thought it was and it wasn't....I was always curious to see what he was going to do next though, even if it was just wandering around the city and running into hookers or random people. but then again the whole book was basically him wandering around the city, and going off on tangents. but still good. and my teacher didn't kill it because we never talked about it in class

and into thin air is a good boook. I read it a few years ago though, so I don't remember much except I liked it and everst sounds intense.

From hunted to hunter

your all fools your skipping the main themes of the book and just crying about how phobe saved holden, your missing the whole catcher in the rye part and how he was so depressed because all he wanted to do was save kids from losing their inicene thats why he loved phobe so much and didnt want here to see the ugliness in the world. thats where the title comes in all he wanted to be was the person who waited in the rye for the kids to fall out,or lose there inisence and then save them and put them back into the rye and in return give thim back their inisece....ya so thats one of two books ive ever read

As soon as I saw this topic I was going to suggest reading Catcher in the Rye. Mr. Salinger is a god among writers, and has changed my whole perspective on writing and life. I have now read his whole collection, and all of them (with the exception of Seymour: An Introduction{which is also good, but not up to J.D.'s standards}) and thought they were all quite marvellous.

Whoever said Isaac Asimov, I think he is rather decent, but I started reading the foundation trilogy, and started to get into it, but was soon quickly unimpressed, and I couldn't understand it. A book that really impressed me was, "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran. It was another book that changed my perspective on reading, and on life.

Is there a Reading cult or something like that, if not someone should start one.

Trying is the first step towards failure

Golden Compass, Davinci Code, Into the Wild, Catcher in the Rye....... amazing books.

Catcher in the rye pretty much is the story of my life. Minus the hookers. Wandering around doing randomly pathetic shit while really fucking depressed. Go me. Idk, I always felt connected to that book. I think I'm going to go read it again.

I thought catcher in the rye was an annoying book, interesting by the writing but I could not enjoy it because of the annoying protagonist, which does not even fit into my perspective of the "classical teenager".

Just a whiny, annoying person, and studying it in class takes away all the fun of interpreting it yourself...

Catcher In the Rye: Holden, The Catcher In the Rye

Holden Caulfield, the main character and narrator of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is a cynical character. He feels like the whole world is against him and the world is full of “phonies. He believes most people carry out (morally) good actions only achieve material gain. Holden is intensely judgmental and he tends to classify people in a broad category without reading further into personalities, usually making a decision in a matter of minutes. His whole personality may also be due to his child-like tendencies of holding on to innocence and protection being the focus of his relationship with Phoebe. Holden finds himself as the only normal, non-phony person as opposed to every other person being a phony.

According to Holden, “the catcher in the rye is what he would like to be.

“I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game is this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around-nobody big, I mean-except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them…that’s the only thing I’d really like to be (p. 173).

He changes the lyrics to the song, written by Robert Burns, from “If a body meet a body to “If a body catch a body to suit his own needs. His desire to be this “catcher shows how Holden has a need to protect children from adulthood and losing their innocence, mainly the “children falling off the cliff are representative of Phoebe and his feelings of somewhat responsibility. Holden catching children from falling would be to help the kids from being in trouble or “falling off the wrong path. Another interpretation of this vision could be that Holden needs to take responsibility where in past he has not been able to step up for his own actions (or lack of actions). The reason for this “need could have been due to the lack of parental units during Holden’s childhood or perhaps that he does not want to grow up himself. Later on in the book it is clear that Holden progresses from this state of self-denial and “grows up to find that he is not a child.

Another major example for Holden’s tendencies is when he sees the “F-you scribbled on the school wall. Holden tries to get the graffiti off the wall but then realizes its all useless and he is not able to erase all of the “bad words from everywhere. He basically gives in to the fact that he is not able to erase all of the “bad words, in turn he is not able to prevent the maturing of the children. This shows the progress Holden makes and how he now accepts the fact he cannot always protect Phoebe from adulthood and possibly the problems he faced and is currently going through right now. Another example that shows Holden’s maturing through the story is that he does not prevent Phoebe from riding the carrousel.

“All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she’d fall off the god dam horse, but I didn’t say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it’s bad if you say anything to them (p. 211).

So finally, Holden comes to the realization that he alone is not capable of controlling the life and maturity of his sister. This is yet another example of how Holden grows through the story. All of the examples mentioned, especially the “catcher in the rye highlight and help to show that Holden has significantly grown, especially at the very end.
