I need to chat with someone that knows a bunch about magnets and magnatism...

I wanna design an item involving magnets but I have no knowledge on the subject.

Anyone pro-star with this kinda of material?

This is what I know...

Magnets can be stuck to stuff.

Magnets can attract/repel each other.

So to answer your question....all of it

Where does one buy magnets? I can't order online because I need a lot for trial and error

Im so sorry...I really should watch out for myself...I dont wanna die from misspelling!

:P

I think I have what I need now...thanks shadows for the help. should be interesting...lol

invent magnetic bindings for snowboarders or skiiers. make the magnets so strong they are impossible to move. and lighter than a single binding

they stick to metal's because the structure of a metal has free flowing electrons, and the magnet has poles which are attracted to the electrons.

the reason stuff is magnetic is because of compounds in which one of the atoms has a greater attraction to electrons than another atom in the molecule. this will form a pole which gives to molecule a dipole, or pole.

molecules with poles will stick to other molecules with poles, or metals because of the free flowing electrons.

What I want to build is a zero-energy, levitating globe. Similar this without the cord:

Plus I want to use a larger globe that is actually useful. The one in the link above is too small for detail.

I don't know if I can get it to work smoothly, but its a project I want to try anyways. Beats smoking crack as a hobby...

The only issue i see with that would be getting strong enough magnets to levitate the globe. Alot of times an electric current is used to make the magnets more conducting which could be what they are doing there, not certain though.

my jacket was magnets instead of buttons. ive been told not to go near to people with heart rate monitors haha.

Thats what I believe will be the easier part actually. I can always buy more magnets. The hardest part will be finding out how to arrange them and how many are needed to create a uniform field so when i spin the globe, it doesn't fall outta the field and to the floor.

the problem you may have with this also is if the globe rotates vertically. Horizontal rotation is fine cause you will have the same force downwards. if you rotate it vertically, the magnetic field will be different and the globe will fall off.

I think I might have already solved that issue by going it an all metal globe. Problem is I gotta find one first.

Well I was going to try and calculate the needed magnetic field strength, then I realized it would be a complete waste of the next 3 hours of my life.

how is an all metal globe going to solve this? Unless you have a magnet above the globe, or you design something for inside it.

i dont think it would be possible to make one that you can actually use. Any force you put on it will move it in the magnetic field.

exactly. This only works with a superconductor because then there is a much much stronger induced magnetic field (i.e. Lenz's law kind of?) which basically reacts to any movement allowing it to stay suspended. If you try to do it using two magnets there is no way it will work.

?????? Dude I think I know what he wants. What the hell did you think I was talking about? The only way to make the damn thing levitate is A. construct the globe out of superconducting material which requires being cooled to the temperature of liquid nitrogen or lower, making the levitation very temporary, or B. magnetize the globe and orient it so like poles are facing each other. In order for this to work you will basically need to have some sort of holder in order to force the magnets to remain oreinted in such a way that they will continue to repel each other. Understand?

you also have the problem that magnets large enough to get that for of repulsion would abslutley trash and electronics near it

you shoudl make a levatator! look it up online or some shit. its made out of tinfoil and liek sticks and it is this triangle and u plug it in and it will levitate of the ground . its so sick, i made one mad long ago for a science project

The point of me making this is to avoid power cords. If i wanted to go that route i'd just buy one :P

Got some magnets today so I can start farting around with configurations and what not. Can't find any metal globes though which is wack...who the hell sells that kinda shit?

It depends how powerful of a magnetic field you'll have levitating your globe or in your base. To be safe, should probably try and keep it at least a foot and a half to 2 away from any form of electronics, especially ones with cathode ray tubes (i.e. tv's, crt monitors) and things with hard drives.

Ok so this question has been driving me nuts. I finally looked it up. THE REASON THE ONE YOU POSTED WORKS IS BECAUSE OF THE ALTERNATING CURRENT.

Ok so this has been eating at me so I finally looked it up. The reason the globe works because it is connected to ALTERNATING CURRENT and eddy currents etc. which are produced are able to stabilize whatever is being levitated. You can do something similar if you have a rotating electro-magnet I think, and I think this is the only way you could get this to work. There are other ways but they don't make sense if you don't know physics or have access to special advanced materials (i.e. pyrolytic carbon which has anisotropic magnetic properties (you probably don't know what that means)) and you won't be able to design one. If any of you can stomach a short fucking read then here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_levitation

I bet .01% of NS reads that because most would rather argue about stupid shit they know nothing about.

I realize a lot of the reason they have power is because they have tiny micro processors that calculate the feild needed to keep the globe in place. I'm using more of a gravity/cradle idea.

Ps. I realize this project is likely not going to work 100% like I want it too otherwise someone else would have already done it. I'm just doing it for something to do (that or I smoke rocks...lol).
