I think piste is a trail or something off piste=off trails and on piste=on trails. You can look at old trail maps at skimaps.com

Take a look at any ski area that has alpine (above-treeline) terrain. What you get are a bunch of groomed runs ('pistes' - french for run) and the ungroomed, in-bounds terrain around them (off-piste). It's a huge term in Europe because most European ski areas are pretty much all above treeline...

-m

Piste = Groomed run

Off-Piste = Ungroomed/backcountry run

better to burn out...

...then fade away

^ and ^^, when you ski backcountry, you're not off-piste. Off-piste is *in-bounds* off the groomed run...

-m

Piste = Groomed run

Off-Piste = Ungroomed/backcountry run...

THEN WHAT IS A GROOMED BACKCOUNTRY RUN?!?!?!?!?!??!??!?! AHHH! HELP!

You really not know what a piste was? weird, I suppose I am from 'Europe' and do speak une petite peu de francaise. I could send you some old piste maps probably if you send me a SAE. Does it matter where they're for or anything?
