A rock is thrown straight upward with an initial velocity of 9.6 m/s in a location where the acceleration due to gravity has a magnitude of 9.81 m/s2. To what height does it rise?

and

 

A small airplane flies at a velocity of 145 km/h toward the south as observed by a person on the ground. The airplane pilot measures an air velocity of 172 km/h south. What is the velocity of the wind that affects the plane?

if someone knows how to do either of those it'd be very appreciated...if i'm asking too much here let me know cuz i have NO idea how much even needs to be done to solve either of those
 
umm i havent done this stuff for like 2 years. but for the 2nd one dont u just subtract 145 from 172. so the winds velocity its just 27? but i donno, its been a while. but that does make sense
 
thats what i was thinking...like the answer would be 27mph South(because it would be a vector quantity?)
 
First I switches that gravity part into a linear eqation by making the s2 just s and getting the squareroot od 9.83 which then tells you how much it will decellerate per a second not a second squared which is a pain in the ass, then you divide 9.6 by that to find the total time it will be going up before the speed equals zero. Then you need to find the average speed which is easy because you know it is going 9.6m/s at the bottom and 0m/s at the top and since the rate od decline in the speed is linear you just divide 9.6 by two. The you multiply the average speed by the time and get the distance.
 
Well I THINK that wind is measuered by where it is coming from, so its going head on to the plane. And the wind would be the speed of the plain added by the speed of the wind. Because its 145km/h over ground, plus the wind is pushing against it at 172km/h......

The first one just use your basic projectile motion formuala's
 
Vf^2 = Vi^2 + 2ad

Vf = final velocity

Vi = initial velocity

a = accelleration

d = distance

I'll let you solve it from there. Basic Mechanics.
 
and just imagine, these are two of the easiest physics questions I could imagine. Later I had to calculate the toal mass available for a galaxy to collapse inwards on itself in what volume....
