What is the best type of roof rack?

I have the chose of any type roof rack for my car (Subaru Legacy) as a B-Day present. What type do you like best?

Thanks

You looking for just rack or rack with box?

I recommend the Yakima skybox 21 - biggest fucking roof box ever... you can put so much shit in it its crazy. Opens from both sides, locks securely and has a lot of nifty little features.

if i get a box will it create a lot of wind resistance (heard that somewhere) and in turn decrease my mpg?
also if i get a box, is it easy to take on and off? thanks for the comments so far

but really the yak stuff really rocks. the boxes do keep your stuff from getting all gritty on the road and lets you store all your other crap in there too so you have more room in your car.

Well, without a box, you'll get grit from the road in your bindings, which might damage them. They may also cause abrasion and damage your setup. Also, if there is any snow/ice/water left on the bindings/skis, it will rust. A lot of problems if you ask me.

On the other hand, it will probably 'cause some loss in mileage, meaning you need to fill up more often ($$).

So, take your pick. Are you more passionate about your skis or your money?

How much of an effect it'll have on mileage will really depend on the size and design of the box that you get and how well it streamlines with your car. Some lower profile boxes will probably actually have an effect on mileage that's pretty comparable to having three or four skis just on the roof in a standard thule kind of rack. Others will create far more drag. Also keep in mind that if you don't do much highway driving the effect on mileage will be way way less than if you do alot of high speed driving.

It depends on the size of the box but it will lower you mpg by a few and might notice the car pulling to the left or right. I just drove from pittsburgh to park city and through Wyoming my Outback was all over the road although I did have a box and my bike on the roof and there was like a 50 mph wind.

i have a rack and it works fine, you just need to make sure to wipe the skis down when you take them in and you won't have to worry about rust. boxes are hit and miss with me, many are too small, and some of the big ones are terribly designed and have poor aerodynamics.

fuck that shit save your fucking money i have a fucking honda accord with a little hole in the back seat that comes down and i fucking stick my skis though that fucking hole and put the rest of my shit in the fucking trunk...

save your fucking money and have a nice fucking day...

A standard ski rack will likely hurt mileage as much as a box, if not more as they are more upright whereas a box is round and aerodynamic.

thats what i do,sure you techniqually can't fit one less person in your car but its by far the best things or your skis and your MPG. Also people wouldn't think your crazy when its 80 degrees out and you've got 2 pairs of your skis on your rack.

I usually find a way to shove the skis in the car, but it's not always possible. I have a rack and when we do put the skis up there we always cover the bindings with these oooold boot gaiters no one uses anymore. It works for keeping all the road crap out. It's a smart idea to take them off and bring them inside after you arrive wherever if you're staying the night to avoid freezing or cracking the bindings.
