I need a hobby

Hey guys

I found out a couple weeks ago that I tore my ACL. Thankfully, I didn't damage anything else... But, I'm having a really rough time keeping my head up lately. I can't ski, my boyfriend just broke up with me, and my classes this semester are killing me. I need help finding a hobby that gives me the same (or similar) stoke as skiing. I literally just need something to do haha. I feel like i'm drowning in this funk right now and I really need to get out.

For those that have been injured before, what did you do? How did you keep yourself sane without being able to ski? I've had like 5 concussions and that put me out for a good chunk of time but this is like a good 9-month recovery post-op. Life was soooo chill about a month ago. I was in love with myself and skiing and this damn boy, but now I'm down again. Help!

This isn't a hobby... but House of Cards is really good. That'll pass some of the recovery time! Good luck!

I hear adult coloring books can be very therapeutic, or if you are more artistically inclined you could try sketching, also wine and paint is a pretty popular thing now, there's probably one in your area. Reading good books and playing video games can pass the time pretty quickly.

These are really sweet suggestions, thanks guys! Also i was totally looking for a new show to watch on netflix so house of cards and grey's anatomy might just do :) and if anybody has any good book recommendations that would be sweet too

Depending on where you are in the recovery take up swimming! It's something physical but also wont do damage to your knee like trying to run or something.

If you have a gym with one of the rowing machines, you can set the resistance low and use one leg. You can also do lots of upper body and core workouts!

Do you like to build stuff? Maybe you can build a ski rack, or turn an old pair of skis into a shot ski!

Maybe rearrange your room? Maybe go through old clothes that you don't need anymore, give them to charity or a friend.

Learn new recipes or get better at cooking... or both lol

Learn to play guitar or pick up an old instrument you used to play.

As said before adult coloring books are pretty cool. Honestly go into a craft store and you'll find a lot of things to do. Speaking of that I actually might go pick up some stuff haha.

Good luck in your recovery! It seems like you'll be good to get back out next season, so you've always got that to look forward to! And It's only mid march, so you should be somewhat recovered by summer! Keep your head up! :D

Also, if you don't have a job, maybe look into getting one. Something simple, like maybe answering phones for an office. But you'll be getting paid and you can use the time to save up for something you want! Whether its a car, new skis, a vacation, etc. You can still be productive! Which actually helps a lot if you feel like you're actually doing something with your life.

fucking triple post but oh well. Take up photography if that interests you. There are lots of people on here who could help you out too if thats something you want to try!

ayyy thats the spirit! It definitely sucks but it won't suck forever and you'll be a better you when you get out of it. Wishin ya the best!

It sucks so much, and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. Knees are the worst. I had my surgery in October and missed the entire season, so just be constantly grateful and stoked about what you've been able to do, because that will help tone down the negative thoughts. I just focused on my photography, went back and edited old stuff, and found that reflecting on adventures, both skiing and not, really helped. It's small, but every bit of positivity helps.

I became much more mentally active in the industry itself too, got a job working in a ski shop as opposed to instructing, and tried to learn as much as I could about what goes into making a mountain. I also lucked out living in CT, since this winter was the one to miss.

Hammock, write, create, interact with people, and learn. Try not to let the shitty situation get the best of you- use it to motivate you in PT and the hellish week after surgery.

Feel free to shoot me a message too if you're wondering anything regarding surgery/recovery times and what not! :)

also this!! Make sure you keep your upper body in sufficient shape, it'll make surviving the crutch life a hell of a lot easier. Since you'll be limited physically for awhile, make sure you're eating well, your body needs all the help it can get when you can't exercise a whole lot until a few months in! :)

dude this rocks. you just made my situation way more positive! I'm gonna focus on rehabbing the hell out of my knee after my surgery and get out there again next season. I kinda lost my job as an instructor now (sorta-- they just don't really schedule me anymore) and working in a ski shop sounds prime. I'm gonna grab a hammock, a camera, and surf around this summer just meeting cool people and being stoked on life. My situation has gotten me pretty down lately but I forgot that this kind of injury is totally common in the ski industry. I'm stoked to have so many chill girls and guys to connect with on ns! I haven't been super prominent on this site ever, just watching edits and checking the forums and w/e, and now i'm totally stoked on connecting with all you guys.

guitar was my savior when i was injured :) hang in there

shiiit i've always wanted to learn to play guitar. also skateboard. but i guess i'll settle for guitar at this point in time hahaha

I did a lot of art stuff when I broke my leg, also read a bunch of books. Netflix is rad but I couldn't handle watching tv for days on end. I also did a lot of cooking and baking, the internet makes it so easy to find amazing recipes that are also good for you haha. Also exercise, there's plenty of ways to work out with a knee injury and building strength in all aspects will help prevent another injury.

exercising and rehabbing the hell out of my leg is at the top of my list :) i'm not much for baking but maybe i can finally learn how to cook hahah (sidenote: i can totally make some bomb mac&cheese)

I've had five surgerys so I know the feel. I learned to knit, read a few series that I've always wanted to, and use duolingo to learn a new language!!!
