I Just Lost It With Obama

The sole purpose is to get the biggest "bang" for your taxpayer "buck" when you are dealing with government spending on public works projects. If you are going to use US government money to buy canadian contractors and canadian products then whose economy are you stimulating? For private sector business go with whoever is best/cheapest, but for government spending, keep it USA, it only makes good business sense.

The Buy American policy, isn't necessarily a bad policy in principle. It encourages the trade of American goods -- but it doesn't do anything to satisfy the agreements between other North American countries.

In short, NAFTA needs to be renegotiated because it is hurting the American economy. At the same time, the Buy American policy should be clarified in order to ease the confusion.

You have a point, but really. Is it that bad that they are supporting their local or national made products? Sure it costs more but then it's more eco friendly. Ripping the pipes from Canada out of the ground? He probabaly did that as an example to show people. If you haven;t noticed most Americans are patriotic and having something made from America can make them feel better about themselfs. Maybe Obama used this as a plan to reduce their carbon footprint? There is so many things that he could be trying to make happen you don't know. You jump to the conclusion that you don't like him.

Sure that wasn't just the global recession? I think many Albertans need to realize that economic good times don't last forever. You guys have had a good run these past years but the world is slowing down production. Its unfortunate for those who have lost jobs in those industries but thats part of the gamble of picking a career in a non-renewable resource.

Buy american and buy local both make sense to a degree. Not in the sense that we should start only using american electricity and american electronics. But it does make sense in terms of the auto industry. We gave a huge bail out to american auto makers. So they want us to buy american cars and create revenue for these companies so that the bail out wasn't an entire failure. Also not necessarily removing our dependency on oil entirely, but using what we have here could be a smart idea instead of hoarding it until we are the only country left using oil and everyone else has electric cars. Additionally, some american companies have proved that keeping things local keeps quality up gives americans jobs and keeps costs moderately low. American Apparel, even though I'm sure a lot of you hate the company is doing amazing things. The sewers get paid more than I do, they get health insurance, and massages while they work. Yet the T-shirts and Jeans cost the same amount as pretty much every other company out there but target.
Also buying local benefits smaller towns dramatically. The US needs less walmart and more mom and pop shops. Sure Walmart creates lower prices for us, but think of all the people who had to lose their businesses only to end up working for walmart and making less and feeling like less of a person.
Out sourcing IT is huge as well. People in the US are losing sooooo many jobs because of out sourcing to India and other places. Education is expensive and to go through so much and loose your programming job... that sucks.
So I agree and disagree, but in many many ways buying local/American can be a very very positive thing.
I know in Australia they are doing a huge thing to promote tourism with in Australia to Australians... So it isn't just us.

agreed.

I think that Buy American should apply to the average american consumers, as a recommendation.

But when America's government suddenly decides it doesn't need to trade with it's largest trade partners anymore, I think that's just stupid. Especially when there was a deal made not to resort to protectionist tendencies at the G-20 last November.

I think it's funny (or sad) that a lot of the same people who said they didn't want to see America change (in terms of government) are totally cool with the economic platform making a complete turnaround if that's what the government tells them will put cash back in their pockets.

unless im completly retarded, levi only comes as side chew and isnt fruit flavored in any way.

or at least i have never seen any

Exactly. "Buy Local" is a great plan because it supports local small-business owners and the local economy while at the same time cutting CO2 emissions.

here is what i say we do. get Obama to send us, the consumers, stimulus checks (FUCK the corporations) and we can somehow use it to stimulate the small business's and shit.

honestly just want to know what NS thinks of this. the more people that post their opinions the better, i mean, i've already seen people that agree with me, disagree, with me, people that don't know what this is, and people that don't want to know what this is. there's a decent diversity of people on here, American, Canadian, European, etc, and that's better than anything i can get elsewhere, so discussing things like this, that affect the world, seems like a good idea to me.

and if the North American car companies want us less patriotic people to buy their vehicles, they should start making better ones. i'm not going to buy a North American car if it the pride in it comes from where it was made, rather than how well it runs.

yes, but i also understand that Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 is coming out in the next couple months.... i realize thats selfish but i dont care

You may think that canada can just turn off the lights in the US (which is complete bullshit) but you fail to see how the US has canada by the nuts?

Canada, however cool it may be, is like a mutual parasite. Canada NEEDS the US

there was a big buy canadian campaign back in the day its good for a country to support itself ripping pipes out is retarted and obviousl they have to buy some things form other countries but if an american is going to g out and buy some furniture why not buy american made furniture to support your neighbour i think you are hating on this a litle bit to hard

is this what your refferencing?
Since 1980, Canada’s total energy production has increased by 80 percent, while its total energy consumption has increased only by 40 percent. Almost all of Canada’s energy exports go to the United States, making it the largest foreign source U.S. energy imports.

Your a dumbass, the whole buying american thing is meant to battle consumerism. And it is more expensive to make things out of the country think about it. It takes the same amount of material and the same amount of work, the only difference is in other countries corporations `can have 10 year olds make your shit for 5 dollars a week.

i didn't reference that article. i worked in the oil and gas industry for a year, what i said was something i learned, i also learned it in high school social studies.

lol, i apologize i didnt really read the thread well. Kinda high.

But know that i know what were talking about. canada sucks so no one cares. I say that we americans just log it, push all the canadians to greenland and build a huge theme park over canadas ruins. Problem solved

i understand where your coming from about being trade partners for along time but its no need to get pissed off about...its not like the us will cut all trade to canada we rely on eachother to much as neighboring nations to do that....in all honesty our nations economy is in the shitter and we need to buy more american products to help us get out.....same shit happened back in the 30s ...and we cut trade down to help then too.....i wouldnt be so pissed at obama hes tryin his best ....he came into office at an extremely rough time and hes doin all he can to help... abd lets face it as soon as the us is out of this recesion america and canda will prob be the 2 wealthiest nations in the world so we should all look at this with hope that it will work ....................and either way mexico is fucked ha

this shows the us oil imports, the largest source of energy imported by the united states
Origin_of_US_imports_of_cru.gif

this shows more than half of canadas energy exports come from oil/gas which makes up only 20% of US consumption.
fg2_01-eng.gif

therefor i draw the conclusion 80% the of U.S.'s energy doesnt come from canada.

hahahah K-rob I thought you were for Obama in the election.. Same old story, young ignorant voters that bought into obama's propaganda, got him into office. Really people, how can you supposedly "get our country out of debt and solve the economical problems" by spending a shit load of money? Its simple economics. But no, obama was the "cool" guy to vote for.

facepalm. yes, just because he liked a guy, and then changed his mind, CLEARLY means hes an ignorant teenage trendwhore. more likely, hes less ignorant than the partisan dipshits that will vote for and support any candidate from their party, regardless of how idiotic he is.

k-rob is from canada...so it doesnt matter who he backs, he is just saying 80% of us electric energy is from canada, which seems plausable, think of the energy outsource just from niagra falls alone

he is an idiot. period. i mean he at one point said fdr CAUSED the great depression. he is the ONE and i mean ONLY person i would say that to. but hes just fucking stupid

K rob is right - Obama is a protectionist, pro-union douche.

He imposed a TARIFF on China at the behest of a UNION. (If you don't know why that's the worst political decision of the year, you have no place in this debate)

the idea of a self sufficient economy is an old-world concept. Americans buying a few % more in American products is no substitute for a viable export sector. We need to be producing goods the rest of the world wants, at prices competitive with Japan and China.

He has pushed the federal deficit past one and half TRILLION dollars. With another 10 trillion expected in the next decade.

His health-care bill is a joke. (that if passed, will cost further trillions)

There no doubt hes better than McCain, but they guy seems determined to speed up America's inevitable default.

Yeah help our own economy and people when at all possible.. Or would you rather these guys make your skis/gun/thong/food/FAIL!
