I Just Lost It With Obama

What the fuck is this "Buy American" bullshit?

America gets over 80% of it's energy from Canada. If Stephen Harper (our PM) wasn't so fucking polite (he chose to go over there and lobby against this ridiculous shit instead of simply retaliating) all the lights would go out. Not to mention every other country that America trades with has better trade partners (with less debt) that they'd be happy to deal with instead of America. "Buy American" is the most ridiculous thing ever, it's just going to cause larger rifts between America and every country it trades with, as if the world wasn't already pissed at the U.S. What is this shit i hear about pipes being ripped out of the ground because they say 'Made In Canada' on them? I thought it was a joke at first, but now they're discussing it on CBC radio and apparently it's true. Our pipes suddenly aren't good enough? Honestly if it were up to me America would left with less than 20% of the energy they have now, let's see what Americans would think of "Buy American" then, I bet somebody would shoot Obama. If this stupid policy carries on for much longer, American consumers can expect prices on everything to skyrocket, because unfortunately it isn't cheap to make most things in America.

How's about next election you guys pay a SMART person to run for office instead of the same old retards you get in every election? FUCK OBAMA.

Your an idiot, if you were an american why would you not want to buy american products? It helps our economy and its probably crafted way better than some outsourced chinese shit.

Im the farthest thing from an Obama supporter, but I am pretty sure were not ripping out Candian pipe because "it isnt good enough". The idea behind it is to stimulate the US economy, hence Buy American.

i have an American made car... is that bad? its an 84 though so it isnt new and shitty like most new american cars. its just old and a pain in the ass at the gas pump...

if they arent broke why fix them? who is paying for it? are our tax dollars gunna pay for it? its just another program

But the pipe has been in the ground for ages, it was already paid, for, and now it's being ripped out to be replaced with American pipe. The American economy would never survive on it's own (especially in its already weakened state), for plenty of reasons, one being that most of the natural resources used to create everyday products that Americans need come from other countries, and can't even be found in the U.S.

Thats why we are in Iraq to get that Oil. Thats why they pay farmers in South America 2 cents a day to grow our crops. Its just the way it is, we cant do anything about it. At least the snow still falls every year and we can forget about all the wrong doings in this world.

That war is failed. You would think that America could have at least won an oil war before deciding that it doesn't need it's trade partners anymore.

And if replacing good product that had already been paid for, with new product that needs to be paid for (at what could probably be an even higher price than the original pipe) is good economics, I'll eat my shorts.

wasnt there a guy from England in their Parliment that made a comment a couple months ago that

"you cant spend money to get out of debt"?

why dont american politicians (yes, im looking at Bush in addition to Obama even though im a bit right of center) get this?

I haven't heard anything about this but buying LOCAL is what needs to be done. Help your local economy help the world economy.

I also just heard that obama is banning all fruit flavored tobacco products. When the fuck did this country get a dictator? This just pisses me the FUCK off.

Okay stop it. You are making incredibly ludicrous assumptions and the connotation of your posts is that you are just trying to say Canada is better than America.
"Buying American" will rise prices a little bit, but you obviously have no grasp of macroeconomics. It will create domestic jobs AND taxes will be collected to be recycled to infrastructure. I am not saying abandon trade but the American economy needs to be more self sufficient. Your insanely inane statement of the American economy could never survive on its own is just over the top. The US imports a lot which has been incorporated to its economy, yes. However ALL industrialized countries are essentially the same...intertwined into the global system. Your precious Canada would have the same issues.
I really don't know why you are so hyped up about this. The pipes is a stupid situation that was probably blown out of proportion by the media. Even if it is how you say, it's such a small minority that it would be like me saying all Canadians ride dogsleds to work. Your correlation between that and being pissed at Obama is just a misconstrued argument that there are no roots for.

The sheer fact that you are saying Obama is doing this and Obama is doing that shows a lot. There are 3 branches of government. Comparing dictatorship to banning fruit flavored tobacco is really funny. I don't agree with it, it's bullshit but you can easily write a letter to your local senator and speak your voice.

so, no more blueberry vanilla shisha mix for my hookah?

NNNNOOOO!!!!!!!!

Sorry I didn't mean for that to be rude. It's just that everyone complains about Obama doing all this stuff and seems to forget there is a congress.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that I think Canada could survive on a "Buy Canadian" policy either. Why do you think the world is pissed about this? We don't need to trade with you. Japan doesn't need to trade with you. In fact, most of us are doing just fine trading with countries that can actually pay us. The world is pissed about this because it is protectionism, it's ridiculous, and it's not helping.

Like Mr.Panda quoted, you simply cannot get out of debt by spending more, especially if you are paying yourself and not the people you owe. This is simply the worst possible way to get the economy back on track.

Of course the pipes are just a little thing, they are just one example. But the fact is that it's big enough that Stephen Harper considered retaliation in the form of cutting trade, but instead opted to take a more polite approach and actually head over into the U.S. to talk about it.

protectionism does not benefit an economy on the long-run. take an economics course. people tried only producing locally before, it was called the dark ages.

Fine then, Obama's underlings did this. It doesn't matter who did it, it matters why they think it's a good idea. The only countries in the world that can survive under this kind of policy, already are. America isn't one of them, Canada isn't one of them, China isn't one of them, etc. But for some reason, the American government thinks it's completely capable of this. They are cutting trade. They've already stopped buying from many Canadian suppliers.

On a less important side note, since there are some who say Obama is not to blame for this new economic plan, does anybody know who wrote this policy, and who voted in favour of it?

Oh and the American rebuttal to cutting trade with us thus far has been "It will give Canada a chance to create more jobs of its own."

Which would be fine, if this policy was helping our industries grow, instead of hurting them.

your an idiot, and also chose a terrible example to make your point.
obviously obama is not specifically refernceing electricity. Americans get their power from distributers who buy it from the canadians as you say. Taking their choice out of the equation.
and dont forget

stop being jelous

I saw a commercial yesterday for Michael ignatieff and Liberal party, and how he thinks Canada should increase its trade with China and India (I'm assuming that would mean we reduce trade with the states.) This would be an interesting alternative, but it would be way easier to trade with the states since they are right next door. It would be nice if Harper would just stand up against states so we weren't always being ripped off. California owes BC millions in hydro.

They could pay us with Arniebucks...

Honestly we're practically losing money on hydro right now. If we didn't sell it to the States, where would it go? Maybe we could build a maginot line of tesla coils from command and conquer 2...

JD FOR PRIME MINISTER!

if you want your lights to turn on pay your electricty bill?
electricity isnt like clothing, shoes, or guns where there are multiple options from different places.

I, being from BC, know that at least some states (california in particular) buy incredible amounts of electricity, water, and lumber from here. I don't know numbers but I know that lots of our resources go across the border. So I think it would be retarded to just stop importing these resources that are necessary for life, because clearly these resources aren't as accessible or cheap in the US.
However, I think this issue is probably more about material things, rather than resources. So they're encouraging you to buy american-made products. Not a big deal really. Every community encourages buying local stuff. I don't know any economics really, so I'm not going to pretend to know the benefits or negatives of the decision.
Ripping out canadian piping just because it's canadian-made, and replacing it with new, costly american piping sounds stupid enough that a 10 year old could probably recognize it. I'm sure there is another reason for doing that. Unless this somehow demonstrates patriotism for the rednecks and is meant to encourage more votes for next time.

That's one reason, yeah. You would think that long-time partners (key word) would look out for each other. This hurts some of our largest industries, and could force us into trading with less developed nations we don't really want to, probably increasing tied aid and we could end up getting screwed over even worse. But protectionism is the biggest issue in my mind. It's causing global rifts and a lot of tension. The fact that other countries are considering pushing this policy to its limits (cutting all trade with America only, basically making an example of how it's a lose-lose policy) is disconcerting at the very least.

so far it's also hurt the Canadian steel and IT industries as well, and has become a drag on almost all of our economies. It essentially ended the boom here in Alberta, and now companies are cutting jobs to make up for a loss in profit. If the policy doesn't change, we'll probably move on to new partners, or just increase trade with old ones, and people will get their jobs back, but Canada is serving as the country to watch in this issue, what with America and Canada being long-time trade partners that have relied on each other for a long time. If we give up on fixing this, then other countries will too, essentially sealing America as a protectionist state that will rip you off then run out on you.

shut up man, you're not proving anything, you don't really have anything worth saying.

i'd still rather live here than canada.

fuck off.

i want to know if this is true, anybody have a source?

also krob, you live in canada, i envy you, and yes obama says some stupid shit, but we would be much more royally fucked persay wrinkly ass john mccain was in office, his bitch ass woulda faded to dust by now. buy american is stupid considering only 20% of the shit is prolly actually "made" in america, i hope we dont become a corporate government

i made the thread for people who care. if you don't, then you should fuck off. go play pokemon or something, i don't want your ignorance.
