I hate to ask this but...

My knee can't handle skiing any more and I'm not sure if my next surgery will help.

My question, as much as I hate to ask; would snowboarding be less painful/stressful on the knees? I used to board when I was little but I don't remember because I didn't think about knees at that point.

ya, but it doesn't help. This is the brace I use:

From what friends have told me snowboarding is worse on them because your always twisting.

This is pretty much true, there is a lot of stress on your knee, especially on your forward leg. It isn't a sudden jerking motion, but it is constant slight twist, and you must be able to keep your knee bent at all times. Riding the lift also puts a lot of strain on your knee over the course of the day (the wieght of the board hanging on the one leg that is still buckled in). Here is what you could try though: put your good leg forward, adjust your bindings so your feet point more to the outside ("duck stance" or "park stance"), and when you ride the lift keep your good leg buckled. Good luck!

You have had 1 surgery...what did you have done?

Have you been doing any thing to rehab your knee?

How old are you?

I have been skiing for a long time, skied pro for several years. 2 knee surgeries, nearly every one I know who has skied at a high level has done their knee. If you dont rehab and pay your dues in the gym you will pay the price. If you want to ski and you are having issues with your knee you must get on a real program...your body is quite resiliant, pay your dues and you will get it back.

I've had 3 surgeries, my fourth next month. My first surgery was 5 years ago and all rehab was done. I'm 19. The reason my knee hasn't gotten better is because I have a condition called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia... a deficiency in my Adrenal Gland that makes it difficult for me to get over illnesses, makes it incredibly difficult to get better after being dehydrated, and in this case, makes it difficult for my body to rebound after surgery.

And two were for my ACL, one for nerve damage/an infection that killed some of the meat over my patellar tendon, and this upcoming one will be to remove a Neuroma, check for more tears in my Hamstring tendons, and to pull some meat over my screws/knee cap because it didn't heal well.

i dont know enough details about ur knee, or about your case, but i am a physical therapist and i am familiar with both knee surgery rehab and to a lesser extent with your condition.

my recomendation would probably be to take the time, 2 or 3 years if necessary, to full recover from this next surgery. work your arse off to strenghthen your knees muscular stabilisers to take the stress off your obviously weak ligamentous structures.

that said, be guided by ur surgeon and therapist rather than anyone on the internet, but take the time to allow as much recovery as possible before getting back on the boards. best of luck bro.

before u ski take some advil and but ton of icy hot on ur knee. i was able to play baseball last year with a SEVERELY sprained shoulder(skateboarding accident) doing that

FUCK dude that really sucks. Sorry to hear that. I am sure you are taking glucosamine and all of the other shit to help lube up yer knee joints. If you can and have the will power getting on a rehab program and staying consistant will help out a ton with your knee. Good luck with the next surgery.

Thanks for the good words man. I figured I'd make the simple "can I snowboard" thread so I wouldn't have to worry about getting advice from over the internet, but hell, I ended up getting both advice (good, from you) and the big NO on snowboarding.

Take care

man...if that brace isn't working then you're screwed.

my dad has had both of his hips replaced and his left knee fixed and that braced has helped him alot!

yea definitly take next season off to get therapy work the muscles on your leg its gonna suck not skiing but w/e its worth it so you can ski the next years

I really want to try but I haven't made the effort yet. If my knee gets to a point where I can longer ski for good, I'll definitely consider it.

That will just mask the pain for a few hours; he needs to save his knee. Time off is definitely the way to go, and this would be an excellent year to do it.

ya and Advil doesn't work anyways.

Here's the deal... I appreciate your advice and I just wanted to say that I'm not planning on skiing this year, so all the advice to not ski is right on.
