Actually, we import less than 10% of our beef from other countries. Farming is about more than just scraping shit off the ground and throwing hay around. Farmers need to know how to keep a 98% self sufficent herd healthy and productive. They need to know how to treat their sick animals, and grow huge fields of produce for YOU.

Take a fucking look at what you just said. Look real hard. Farmers are some of the most well rounded, skillful people you will ever meet. No they might not know the derivative of e^x or the hard drive space of your computer. However, I guarantee you most of them can do simple math twice as fast as you, and weld you a rail anyday, or build you a drop in, or let alone feed you.

And to your friend below, Farming has consistently been rated in the top 3-5 jobs there are. In fact, farming doesnt fall under most labour regulations due to how many hours they work a day.

Now, both of you, appreciate what some of the hardest working and most underpaid individuals do for you, or proceed to shut your stupid little mouths.

And since it matters to you so much, there are actually some farmers that clean up, and live a very comfortable life. Furthermore, for most it isnt just about making money, it is a way of life. Now I hate saying this, but open you damn mind a little bit. There is no need for you to say anything anymore, because it would be like as though as if you were trying to argue that firefighters don't fight fires. Wouldn't make much sense would it? I would say most farmers have more skills and knowledge than most. My uncle runs a very successful farm. He is an unbelievable mechanic, horticulturalist, chemist, businessman, and heavy equipment operator. He was recently recruited by a local construction company to train all their new operators due to his reputation as an operator and teacher. Both of his sons grew up on the farm, worked on the farm, and obtained skills that are hard pressed to come by. Both obtained college educations and are very successful at what they do. However, one look at their property and possessions and you can tell the skills that they utilize in their day to day life, as well as at work, came from the farm. Not to mention the fact that both of my cousins are sick skiers. Farmers are a dying breed. Please don't let corporate farming, outsourcing, and urban sprawl ruin a long standing profession and what is a past time for some.

The way I see it, farmers have a right to act supirior, seeing how they provide us with the food we eat. And I have worked on farms before, it is the hardest work I have ever done. I bet your new york ass hasn't ever tried running a swather or do you even know what that is? If you said shit like that here in Montana, you would get your ass kicked and deserve it. Farming isn't an easy way to live. It takes vast amounts of land, a great knowledge of farming techniques, thousand dollars worth of equipment, help to make it all run and tools to fix things when the go wrong. Not to mention the random chance of a good crop that goes along with farming. You are truely a dumbass, and I hope that some "hick" that is twice your strength kicks your ass someday.

i learned in my sociology class, that farmers are 4% of the population, which feed the other 96. they are extremely underpaid and underappreciated for how much our country depends on them.
 
I'm a farmer and I will rep a little for both sides. First of all, I am a farmer and its hard work, no one knows what its like until you have truly lived it, not for a month or a summer, I mean years of farming. You should not bash some of the hardest working people in America like that you Bitch. On the other hand, these kids at your school sound like a bunch of posers, most real farmers dont go to school smelling like shit all the time and dumb shit like that unless they are just a poser looking for attention. Many farmers do dress western, but people can dress how ever they want. Finally, not evey farmer fits the stero type, I love skiing and punk rock and wakeboarding, and I also come to shool everday showered and wearing a t-shirt and jeans and sneakers like everyone else. So really, I know the point you are trying to make... but you said it completely wrong and sounded like a bitch!

I have friends that are farmers. They are the most down to earth people. Both parents graduated from University and their children are almost finished University.

i actually have alot of respect for farmers, not rednecks, but farmers. they go to work at like 5 in the morning and dont stop till like 10 at night. they have to work so hard just to feed strangers. i think it could possibly be one of the toughest jobs out there
 
here's my contribution to the abomination of a thread.

every person who has downtalked farmers in this thread is making gross generalizations and is obviously an elitist ignorant fuck.

i'm the manager of a full function small fruit and vegetable farm, we also have a horse retirement farm, and we boil a few hundred gallons of syrup a year. running a farm is just like running any other business. it's not simple math, there's budgets, there's taxes, payroll, wholesale, distribution, trade sanctions et cetera. and i'd be willing to bet it's a lot harder than running a lot of other businesses. intelligence is absolutely necessary to work on a farm. if you don't work your ass off and if you don't know how to fucking grow some shit and work with the land, than you're screwed. it's one of the few PROFESSIONS where your physical labor determines if you get your paycheck or not. and that's what i enjoy most about my job. i like seeing the direct reward of my extremely hard work. i am crucially important to the succes of my farm, and so are all my co-workers. if i work hard, i see the pay off. i have a lot more respect for farmers than people who go to work, clock in, do their job description, and clock out. we don't have a time clock on the farm. you work until the works is done. and believe there is ALWAYS work to be done. i'd love to see you who hate farmers balance a hundredsomething thousand dollar budget, fix a bailer, fertilize 5 acres of raspberries, prune an acre of blueberries, feed, run, and groom 23 horses, then package up 50 gallons of maple syrup then pack them up for wholesale. all in a days work bitch.
