I hate being a minor...

So you will come to a point in life if you have not already where you want to do something to enjoy yourself, and find something that you can do to remove yourself from the video game, television, and computer filled world that we call our homes. Recently I have come to the realization that I have constantly been looking at cameras, waiting for that one deal, etc., etc., etc., until this point where I've fallen upon a camera that I have been looking at for a couple years now. Unfortunately when I started looking at this tank of a video camera I was a wee lass with not a penny to my name so I just admired it from afar and through edits. Here I am today 3 years older with a job which is supplying me with a sufficient amount of money where I will have enough to purchase this time capturing machine. The equation is quite simple. I make money, I put money in the bank, I save money, I work more, I deposit more money, and so on and so forth. The hard part is that since I'll be 17 in 20 days, and in order to withdraw money I need to be exactly a year and 20 days older in order to do it without the signature of father. My argument being that it will be like everything else I pick up, whether it be a sport such as skiing which I fund or playing guitar which I was able to pick up after hours and hours on end of sitting in my room and teaching myself how to play; I stick with them. I would be using the camera year round for skiing, bmx, nature, and time lapse edits as another hobby that will give me an excuse to get outside and cut down on time being indoors. The camera I am referring to is the vx1000 and the cost is half of what is being asked by most sellers. If any of you have anything to say about the camera that you enjoy to help support my argument it would be much appreciated. Hopefully it will be able to back up the information I have already gathered from scouring the internet for reviews.

how much money are we talking about? cant you just ask your parents?
i suggest getting a cheaper starting camera

kinda good story to post up, but that is w very sick camera i have 2 friends that have them and they are one of the best investments they said that they have made. it is an expensive camera but they are very reliable and wont break like a japanese car will. Also just go for it man do what makes you happy and in the long run it doesnt these have a really good sellback value anyways do it man. and whats your price your looking at i may be able to get you a cheap one.

Its $450 with the camera, a raynox wide angle lens, 1 battery, and a charger. I've sat down with them and explained all the things that the camera would be good for and how I could turn around and re-sell it for more than I purchased it for as a way to make a profit if I were to ever get out of filming which I wasn't planning on doing. The viewfinder ribbon is going so that's a small investment I need to make but it would be something I would repair myself so its not too much of a headache. The reason I want to start with it is I'm willing to take the step and purchase the vx1000 so that I can learn on a 3ccd camera and save money so I don't have to move from camera to camera if that makes sense.

My dad isn't signing because he wants me to spend money on a car that essentially he will be driving for the most part. Due to the fact that he is out of a job and I have money he is controlling my cashflow to his benefits saying that if I put money into the car I can drive it but without having the money for gas and insurance is another thing. He has already made me put a $200 down payment on this car that isn't even running and to make it even worse he owes me $675 from money he has taken out of my savings account for things like gas and staying at hotels when he goes to work.

personally i am a very understanding person and feel bad for your dad being laid off, but there ARE jobs out there you just have to look there is no reason he should be taking money from you unless he totally needs it, it really isnt very hard to find a job even if its just some little job where you get paid under the table, just start saving up and hide some money away as well find some shit to sell.

Yeah I'm not hard-hearted either its just that I did exactly as you said by saving money up other than what I had put in the bank and came home to find that he had rummaged through my stuff and had taken the couple hundred dollars I had hidden without asking. Thats the stuff that bugs me.

instead of depositing your checks in the bank just start cashing them until you have enough saved up and then just go buy it

Your dad did support you finacially for the last 17 years, correct?

Well anyway, its your job and your money. Why don't you just go the bank and start your own account. Pretty sure you don't need to be 18 to deposit money in your own bank account and get an atm card for it. Money is money to the bank.

Whats the point of a camera anyway for you? Do you need it that bad? I think a car will serve you way better than a fucking camera. Make sure to film your friends as they drive past your house, ok?

This goes out to Miralgia becuase I couldn't quote:

Have you ever heard of something called a bike? If the kid doesn't need a car to survive like most other Americans think they do, more power to him. Get rides from friends who are willing and able, I mean why not? Oh and maybe he lives in a city with a good public transportation system.... crazy thought huh? And what is a camera to him? You're in the military right? What is your rifle to you? I mean I'm sure you enjoy shooting your rifle at the range and it is also a tool you use in your work. A camera to a filmer is something they enjoy using and a tool that enables them to do their job. So what if the kid isn't a professional filmer, if it brings him joy and gets him out of the house, I say go for it! Try something new... I mean I'm sure he's played with cameras before and knows what he's getting into.

To the OP:

Buy the camera. Keep talking to your dad and maybe tell him that you want to explore your interests and maybe you want to purse videography as a career. Talk him into it, you worked for the money, you deserve it.

Doesn't change the fact that his money is already in his fucking bank account that he wants to get it out of.

Calm down.

not true. i had to open an account a few days ago because mine was closed due to lack of activity and some new was passed and if if you are under 18 creating a bank account requires parental approval and signature. so he cannot open a new account without his father's consent.
to the op. i would highly reccommend just cashing your checks, stashing the money somewhere, and just buying it. if you have to order it online just use a friends debit card or something.

i feel that he was also crying on to his key board as he pecked out this sorrow story

how about you dont put the money into freaking savings and the money you save you put into what we call a CHECKING account. these are accessible under the age of 18 and as far as i know custodial accounts such as your savings are common for anybody under 18, heck i've been 18 for 3 months and still havent changed it over due to no need but thats how the bank system works, and shit yes i still need my mothers signature to change it over, as i assume you will.

a car that his dad will be driving and using more than he will does not seem like a good investment at all, and you dont NEED a car at 17, they are nice but not essential to life.
