I've been trying to figure that out for a while. Especially when its posted on things other than twitter. For example on here.
 
it's a "hash tag" other people can click it and see what other people from all across the world have tagged there posts with that word. It's kinda like describing your post.

i use mine mostly to follow websites, blogs, news sources and yes celebrities, but its not like they post shit like "im sittin on the couch watchin football"

most of the tweets I see are actually interesting stuff about tours, albums and stuff I am actually interested in. it's basically a personalized news feed that only gives you info on stuff you choose.

thats how i use my twitter anyways, and I haven't written a tweet in weeks.
 
i have one, and i used to be a hater. it seriously is an awesome tool for staying up to date, and like you said, no one just posts "lol eating a sandwich" and stuff like that.
