besides having a big fucking problem... what else is wrong with me?

its an 02 4cyl simple 2.0l jetta

and i dont drive like an asshole, no tickets. with 115hp its hard to go fast enough to get a ticket

Theres many things that lead to bad mileage, things such as, not properaly inflated tires, out of alignment, worn spark plugs, engine sludge, brake drag, dirty or broken O2 sensors, dirty air filter. These few simple things could save you a bunch, you may also want to look into a cold air intake because they usualy can add a few more mpg.

^everything he said plus what rpm are you shifting at. How hard are you accelerating off the lights, do you live in a city or the country, moutnainous or flat?

haha honestly.. shifting at 3,000 rpm no lie... i dont accelerate fast for the most part.. like the occasional quick take off but id say 80% im driving very cautiously... anddd i live in the country sorta.. rural area

i get like 13 mpg in my truck city and if i drive like an ass i am looking at single digits.... you may have it bad but i got it worse...

okay then, change your spark plugs, oil, air filter and check your tire pressure, best bet for fixing it. If that doesnt work you may have a fuel issue.

a big part of gas mileage is how much of the time you are actually accelerating. So next time you are in your car, see how often you are pressing the gas to the point that you are getting resistance from the pedal. You can be at 4500 rpm, but if you are not accelrating, you can still be getting higher gas mileage than if you are actually trying to accelerate all the time at low rpms

I doubt the problem is with the way he's driving. My dads V8 avalanche used to get 16 driving in the city and at least 20 highway. I don't think I was a particularly great gas mileage driver.

Im going to agree with grade of gas. I only fill my Jetta with Premium and shes happy as a kitten on catnip.

But to be safe get all the aforementioned checked out.

The grade of gas dosent have anything to do with gas mileage. The octane level in gas is to prevent detonation (knock) from occuring. Knock occurs when the spark in the cylinder on the upstroke (when the piston is moving toward the spark plug) prematurly detonates the fuel in the cylinder. The extra octane in fuels such as 89 or 93 prevent this from happening. Run the kind of gas your car calls for it was designed to be used with it. If you think that putting a higher octane fuel in your car is adding gas mileage, you are in fact just wasting your money.

Changing your air filter costs like $8 and will improve your gas mileage. Good to know about the acceleration thing though, whenever I was low on gas I always got super worried cruising around at 3500 RPM doing 80 on the highway.

i have an air intake.. i dont have a stock filter.. which in my mind.. haha was susposed to increase the mpgs..

when you think about it, it really isn't that much more expensive..maybe $2.00 extra per tank. its better for your engine in the long run as well

not true, depends on the car. I have to run it in my car to prevent detonation. It actually makes absolutely no difference in most cars that are set to run on regular octane, there are tests proving that all over the net.

theres definitely something messed up with your car, get it checked. You should be getting 25 mpg minimum. My subaru legacy gets 25 or sometimes better, and its 4 wheel drive

What you want to do is take off your timing chain, turn the camshaft a little bit and then put the timing chain back on, I'm sure it will run great.

yeah if you don't keep your car tuned up nicely it uses a lot more gas. It runs more efficiently when everything runs smoothly, so i would check everything he said.

i have a 2.3 turbo saab 5 speed, i get shit mileage if i accel all the time( like try to make it to 5th in a 30) so i try to keep my rpms thesame once im at 30 ( or the speed limit) its a lot ewasier to do in a manual though

same thing happened to my accord. went from about 28 to 18. the engine sounds fine so i dont thinkn its plugs or wires. the air filter is good. someone said it might be my fuel filter. could be the o2 sensors, i didnt realize that would do it. but im probably just going to bring it to the shop and unless you have lotsa time id recommend bringing it there. you shoudl be getting almost 30 mpg's im guessing

yeah its just how it is kinda, my taurus (lol) gets like 20 highway and like 14 city/rural. its gay cause it has a "miles to E" meter on it and it goes down like 5 miles per 1 mile i actually drive.

i get roughly 25 in my jetta, 02 1.8t. its automatic (yea i knwo..) but with my like 13.5 gallon tank, its safe to say i have over 300 miles to drive.

something is obviously wrong with your car or maybe you run it for an hour before you drive anywhere

thats strange man, i have a 2.0 golf and i get 27-30 with a thule rack on it, a pretty obvious check would be your gas tank, there shouldnt be a problem there however because im pretty sure its a plastic tank so no rusting. if you do all the routine maitntence and find the MPG isnt getting any better there might be a problem with gaskets or your manifold, interior things that you should bring to a shop for, good luck man

In my old mitsubishi i found that for the price of premium at the time (don't remeber how much it was exactly), it actually saved me $6-9 for a fill up just because it added an extra 30-40 miles.

it all depends on the car.

ya you have a truck, he has a jetta, there is supposed to be a big difference there, like 20 miles not 3.5 miles

I thought Jetta's were supposed to run on 91 octane...? I don't have one but my girlfriend does and she needs to use 91 octane in hers.

You just dont want to turn you fucking cam, of you are going to do that go get a timing light for 35$ which is way less than a visit to shop cause this very well may be the cause and do it right

NO NO NO! Dont go out and spend 25 cents more per gallon, this is one of the biggest mis conceptions about filling up. ONLY and i repeat only use a higher grade gasoline if your manufacturer recommends it...or if you engine PINGS. If you hear a PING sound in your engine while driving it often means the octane rating of your gasoline is not high enough

yup. have a garage check you out. i had a turbo 1.8 gti, and i used to drive that bitch like a bat out of hell , and got close to 30 mpg most of the time. theres something wrong.

it could be a number of things. first i'd say clean your mass airflow sensor and see if that helps. it could also be the fuel filter, or the fuel pressure regulator, or one of your o2 sensors. if you know anyone with a vag-com have them scan your car. good luck
