I don't look at the photo section but I just got bored and realized why.

This is not a section I lurk in and I'm sure this point has been raised before. but here it is again from my perspective.

Forgetting how bad our photo section was I went there for the first time in years. I was genuinely shocked that the icons are still really small and I have to click on each photo individually. Once clicking I can't even click an obvious link to view the next photo. This is as old school as it gets.

Fixing this needs to be a priority. lets look to photo streams that work well.

Instagram is pretty much king. if there was an app that was like instagram but it was actually just the ns photo section, i would use that shit! If the ns photo section just worked in a similar way I would also use it!

Tumblr, that's alright too, hey this is 2015, you could probably make the section like tumblr but with the option to change the theme. you could have infinite scolling instagram style or different sized tiles, you could even make more popular photos bigger. many choices. all better than what we currently have.

Is such an out dated style of photo gallery available anywhere else on the internet? Surely not anywhere with this number of users.

Totally noted, and a mega re-design of this is on deck.

Yeah, definitely not my favorite gallery system by a long shot. I just checked my personal profile photo section and yeah, it's... not good.

Well in its defense it was built in roughly 2006. So for that time it wasn't bad at all.

Oh yes, I'm aware. But now 9 years later in 2015, retina screens, fast internet, and vastly different UI's exist. Hope we can adapt soon and hope I can help!

Yeah, we know it's horribly dated. As Bishop said we have plans for a resurrection, along with a massive overhaul of NSTV/Videos.

A feed of the latest and top photos would be super sick. I would then use it for sure.

hmm guess i'm so used to it that i've never really thought about it

Yeah I mean anyone who has been here for a number of years will be used to the interface, but anyone new is really not going to be into it. I mean even at a certain point those who are used to it will realize its super dated vs. the really recent tech that is out there.

Those are both actually there.... what about those feeds don't you like?

I dunno, Ive been using this site for a few years now and I've never used the photos section for more than a few minutes at a time because of how annoying it is getting around.

Maybe when you guys redo it try to give it some more flow, so you can scroll and see more pictures for example, kinda like the homepage now, but so that they take up the whole screen. Then you could have a little section to the side of each picture for a little forum-style discussion, where you could upvote specific comments and reply to people, getting notifications for the responses.

Like you said, they are dated. There's no flow. A vertical, infinite scroll of the latest photos much like Instagram, with the option to switch to top would be a great improvement. Have smaller, but not thumbnail sized versions for quicker load times (think the current width of the main body of the site) then let me click the photo for enlargement and more info.

Also when the evening prime time rolls round for me it's almost impossible to view photos because of internet speeds. Not to mention videos, but that's going off topic...

What is the problem with your prime time internet speeds?

Does NS throttle server access in the downtime (my primetime)? I always thought it was a combination of this plus the network being strained locally by other users causing things to load extremely slow. If I want to watch a video here at this time I usually have to let it load for ~ 15 minutes. Probably longer.

I can't watch things on vimeo at night for the same reason. (P.S vimeo has a 50:50 chance of flat out not working, throwing up an error along the lines of 'Sorry! Something happened')

No, we absolutely should not do that. The fact that vimeo has issues as well is problematic on your end.... seeing this on multiple sites is suspicious. Do you see it on YouTube as well?

Youtube loads just fine, which is why I began to believe it was something on your end too. Weird.

Also, I don't know why I bothered...but I did. Here's a mock up of a feed. Scrollers, dropdown comments (with icons), original uploader icon displayed. Same idea for photos.

Lol. Cool mockup, I was thinking something along these lines as well, this would be dope.

Thread derail.... can we keep it to photos in here?

If we want to have a separate discussion about suggestions for video page that is fine, but lets keep on track about photos.

with photos it's nice to be able to fullscreen and sit back and scroll through them with the arrow keys.

It would be sweet to be able to filter better too, so instead of just having all new photos or all new photos in rails, being able to select all new photos in rails, big mountain, and jumps or whatever combination you want then sit back in full screen mode and scroll through them would be so sweet.

No problems. I think as a band aid fix you could just increase the size of the previews in the photo section (spanning the width of the body of NS), and add the ability to upvote/downvote without clicking on the photo.

Both of these are outstanding ideas and I'll add them to the mix for our update.
