I don't care if your the president I'm not going to school longer than I have to now.

dumb question, if this were to happen... does that mean MORE taxes coming to us? i mean, i know for a fact that no president can EVER live up to what he says in the campaign but fuck, wasnt one of the things he said the most was he would "not raise taxes on the middle class" or something like that?

you pretty much just typed a reply in agreement with me while throwing out insults. bARvo.

"not to mention parents who are themselves less educated are less likely to educate their children"

the vicious cycle I was talking about

"i knew plenty of kids in school whose household income was in upper 6 figures, and their parents didn't give a fuck about their education."

Yes, rich kids spend more time screwing around and playing expensive videogames than reading over their summer and winter breaks. (I said that in response to the person I was quoting about inaccessible books being the down fall of poors kids' education.)

"on the flipside i also had a friend whose parents had little to no money growing up, but they were rigorous about his studies and he ended up graduating top of our class."

A prime example of how a parents focus on education is of the utmost importance, thank you for supporting my claims.

"i'm just staggered that you can really believe that kids who go to crowded, poorly funded schools in the inner city are fucked no matter what, rather than believing we can do something about it."

I did not say that, in fact I lean towards the opposite. That with a strong focus on education any school is capable of producing smart, educated students.

You jump all over the place, "lower income kids can't make it", "my friend did though based on what you said parents should do" "Lower income kids will never make it"

And drop the ivory tower attack bullshit, I'm sure your parents made more money than mine, and I'm sure I've paid more into the educational system than you. You have a bleeding heart for the losers of society, I would rather take advantage of them.

Skimmed the thread.

In my opinion education is of the highest importance and should be looked upon as such.

Our country (the US) is fast becoming one of the least educated countries in the information age.

Longer school days might correct this problem, however remembering back to school I feel like 90% of class time was a waste anyway so the solution is better teachers and tougher curriculum.

better teachers and more involvement of parents. thats the biggest thing. im an El Ed major now, and from my experience observing, the kids that struggle the most are the ones whose parents are least involved.

there is a point though where there is too much involvment too. its rather extreme and very rare to see but it is there.

Who the fuck does this president think he is? This dude wants to put his hands in every little thing. WTF!! He sure is giving is "change" like he promised. Charnge for the worst. Impeach this MOFO.

except, for the same reason the Dems couldnt impeach Bush, he hasnt really done anything Constitutionally wrong. sure, he has bent it here and there, but he hasnt done anything directly against it. Clinton could get impeached cause he lied under oath.

what most of you dont realize is how shitty the american educational system reall is compared to the rest of the globe, i think its a pretty good idea personally

The amount of stupidity in this thread is staggering.

1. This is not Obama's original policy, it has been around for years.

2. Whoever said that poor families do not value education is way off base. In fact I have found that the opposite is true. Many of these families want their kids to do better than they are and want their kids to work hard in school. However, many variables prevent these kids from performing well, but I'm not gonna get into them.

3. I'm all for a longer school day if it actually makes up more competitive in the global market. I don't think that this is necessarily the answer though. I have visited a German college track school and their day only goes from 7AM-12:30AM, and exchange students from these schools have often gotten better grades then their American counterparts at my school, even though all the instruction is in their second language and they are required to take high school level english for native english speakers. I think our attitude towards school is the main problem. Many other cultures take school much more seriously than us.

Obama cant get impeached for the same reason Bush wasnt. he hasnt done anything in direct violation of the Constitution. sure, Bush invaded Iraq without Congress's approval but he didnt call it a war at the beginning which is the same way the Americans invaded Korea. it was called a "policing action". now we all know that is utter bullshit but it passes for being Constitutional.

Wow kids need MORE time in school? I seriously learned the same shit in one math class in college that I learned in two years of high school math, jesus christ.

Word

What good is it learning the same grammar shit for 12 years straight? They should teach younger kid's how to write better and organize papers and study techniques.

Which is unfortunate because he was the first president to propose a balanced budget in god knows how long AND was living the real American dream: Fucking a young and innocent secretary on the side.

I'm not for impeaching Obama but his socialist leadership and the haphazard government spending needs to stop soon.

ill stir the pot. Drew, what do you think about privatizing public education? let parents choose through vouchers(not a huge fan, because anything the government pays for the government has control over) or tuition tax credits (not deductions) up to X amount per year. let the schools that have a viberant learning environment thrive, let the "shitty" ones fall by the wayside. the great thing about this is now the parents determine what is a good school or a bad one.

o BTW i know this is coming from suburbia, not the inner city. but last year my local school district wanted a referendum to...........(drum roll please)................. put artificial turf on the football field. sounds like a great use of tax dollars guys. (facepalm) if you ever have the chance, you should drive past the Wayzata HS. the over the top decadence is repulsive.

i for one think it would be a good idea to stop, or slow, the feeding of the monster that is big education. the only difference is this monopoly is run by the government. so we pay for it whether we like it or not.

the problem is then you are going to end up with overcrowding in the "good schools" and then they wont be good any more

so the proprietors of these "good schools" (not my definition of good, the consumers definition, whatever taht might be) will be free to open more, or expand the good school. more choice. basically thats what im advocating for.

Go fucking die.
I come from a fairly low income family. Does that mean that I don't deserve a fucking education because my parents don't make enough money?

And sorry if this comment has already been addressed later in the thread. It just baffled me so much that I had to respond.

this.

More school won't do jack shit to raise the education level of Amercian youth. We have to restructure the entire educational system itself, not add more days to it. This just sounds like straight NWO propaganda.

haha ok. that statement just generally annoys me. if we could impeach every guy who people didnt agree with, this country would be even more of a shit show.

wow ur really lucky. i go to school for 5 days a week, and 8-10 hours a day. homework not included. the 10 hours only on monday though.

The regulars have chimed in on this one and again I am baffled. I just can't see where anyone would want to impeach Obama because he wants you to go to school longer. This lazy attitude is insane to me.

How can you even compare Obama to Bush? This is right wing propaganda. He has not even done anything remotely as disrespectful and heinous as Bush. War profiteering, toture, no bid contracting, misinformation to the Senate and the American people...

Maybe if you guys would study harder and look at school as an opportunity instead of an obligation we could compete on a global market and not require longer school days. But you would rather bitch about someone imposing on you, and challenging you than take a look at your self.

So again, the length of the school day is not the problem, its the teachers, students, and parents.

Bill Gates throws out a lot of good points in his TED talk. The education system is agreeably messed up, and changes need to be made. And you guys don't realize it but you have it fairly relaxed in comparison to a lot of schooling systems all over the world. Escpecially in India, the competitive nature of getting into post secondary education is so extreme that often parents send there kids to the US or Canada to get a post-secondary education.
Watch the first part of Bill Gates speech on education in the US.

I don't think that your school days should be any longer than they are now. At least between the ages 6-15 here in Finland we only have a maximum of 7 hours of school per day and that's really rare too. We don't get too much homework either but still it seems that we're doing quite well on the PISA tests.

PISA_Test_Scores_vs_cumm_edu_spend_.jpg

It looks like we aren't spending as much on education as you either. It's about quality, not quantity.

Pic is the first pic that comes up on Google images when you search "Pisa test scores".

I would love this not only for the skiing but for the road conditions. driving every day to school in the winter is not fun (see my picture of my car on my profile)

I completely agree, I think it is more how Finland treats class time. The teachers are much more in control and do not tolerate very much.

I think teachers in the US let kids get away with way too much and in our sue happy culture it is hard to properly challenge and discipline kids.

I love working with Finnish engineers they are smart as shit and rarely make mistakes. Good show Finland.

to your point 2, i fully agree with what you said. im fairly well off cuz my dad is a lawyer, but my grandparents were fairly poor after the war. so my father was really motivated to get out of poverty, and his parents helped him alot.

to ur point 3. its cool to read ur opinion on this. because im from germany and go to an international school. its true, that the attitude to school here is fairly good, however not evenly throughout the society i would say. the middle class is best in school i guess. because the rich kids say fuck it, my parents got enough dough, ill never have to work, or for the poorer families (often ofcourse not allways) the children fall to crime and alcohol and only complete until middle school then they cant go to college. i dont think that a person who is not so good in school would come to the US. so u might only have seen the ones from our country which are academically motivated. however i have the impression that Americans are also fairly motivated. because for u guys the colleges are bloody expensive, not like here, that u can go to a good university without having to pay 1 cent, so for u it is more important to get a scholarship. i haven't been at an American school, but alot of my friends have. they said it was really nice. they said you had way more school spirit than here. here you don't chill together after school, once the bell rings everybody runs home as fast as possible. i would also say that the sports spirit is lower here. at least at our school not even 10 people come to watch the our soccer team, whilst when i watch MTV it seems like the whole school of yours cheers for their team. we just meet at the weekends to go to clubs or bars. maybe after school drink a coffee. i would really like to experience a year of American school to be able to compare the two systems.

off topic:

but you guys are so lucky with your terrain parks. everytime i see videos of breck, mammoth etc or a nice pow segment from mt. baker, i wish i could also ski there. the alps are nice, but freeskiing is not as popular here. however the berlin.freestyle.ch will be at my city. all the dope riders will be here. would be so stoked to talk to them.

anyways, i hope youll get your holidays in a way that you'll be still able to shred a month or two :D

cheers

isnt part of this (and this could be under teachers considering your post but) the curriculum or the administrations problem? i mean, ive been in college for three years so this may have changed but in WA state, your freshman year was spent teaching you how to adjust to high school, sophomore year was spent teaching the fucking WASL (such a dumb fucking test), junior year was a combo of the Junior Research Paper and the PSATs, and senior year was spent teaching the SAT, ACT, and the Senior Project. now, i understand how the PSAT and SAT and ACT are all incredibly important as they are essentially the USAs version of a college entrance exam that other countries have. but, the curriculum in many classes isnt actually about math, science, history, or english... a LOT of time is spent on these crazy graduation requirements.

an example (and yes, Ben and some others will tell me not to do this, using personal experiences in an argument but whatever) is my high school had a academic portfolio, senior project, and junior research paper and they always told us "Colleges will look very hard into these things when you are applying". no College i have applied for asked about any of those except the research paper, and even then it was a History Prof of mine cause he wanted me to rewrite it to get it into some national history magazine (something like the Harvard Law Review for history majors) which i did..... one of my academic advisors here at college actually told me to burn my senior project and portfolio because i have no need for them anymore.

ok, i kinda figured that was your point but wasnt completely sure. i dont know if math and science is the only thing though. history could use some work too.

I am not a teacher so I really have no way of saying what should be taught but it kills me when people don't understand simple Newtonian physics or don't know even the basic idea of atomic structure. Or as you are saying when people don't know the sequence of events that caused WWII or the cause and result of the civil war.

At some point teaching became less about teaching and more about going through the motions to gain tenure and more funding. And for students the motivation became to get test scores and grades or just do the least amount necessary to pass.

There is no pride in school I guess what I am trying to say and I don't know how to correct this but a serious class room environment and better goals is definitely a step in the right direction.
