I cannot wrap my head around this

Does anyone else find this really disorientating?

The inside of the mask is made to look like that. Its just an optical illusion, stare at it for awhile and tell yourself thats its made to do that and its just the inside of the mask using depth to trick your eyes.

Got it!

The first part of the mask looks like it is rotationg counter clockwise, making it look like it extrudes. When you watch the second mask, you see it is rotating clockwise, so you just have to watch the first mask and tell yourself it is moving clockwise.

This, I found that if you stare at his eyes it's confusing as fuck, but if you stare at the bottom (bow area), my mind does not get fucked.

the first face looks like its just floating, it doesn't even look like its on the rod.

I understand it but it would be way too hard to explain this haha

SCIENCE TO THE RESCUE!!

The reason it's screwing with your head is that the light source is moving along with the mask. This means that you can't see the shadows on the concave side of the mask. If you could see these shadows your brain would recognize that it is concave and rotating the opposite way it looks.

Don't believe me? Look at the shadows in the background.

Also, I'm motherfucking Bill Nye.

Actually the light source might be at an angle so it doesn't even need to move in order to keep the whole concave section bright. The apparent shadow changes in the background might be due to exposure change.

A cool brain illusion nonetheless.

i cant do this. i try and i try but i cannot manage to see the original (inside of the mask) for what it really is until the front of the mask becomes obvious

This sorta reminds me of something my sister showed me. Look at a water fall, unfocus your eyes, after like 10 seconds look at the rocks next to the fall and they will move just like the water was. The cells in your eyes move with the falling water and the still move shortly after you gaze away, or somethin like that. Shes an optometrist so she knows all sorts of cool eye and light shit

Dude... Thats so weird. The large pic looks like its moving in whichever direction the last little pic i looked at is moving, if that makes sense

Really dig this. Most of the time, especially when I first glance at it, I get clockwise. Its easy to see it switch on yourself though.

I've seen this so many times and never been able to make it go counter clockwise. I stare it for lengthly periods of time, look everywhere on the body and still it just stays going clockwise

I made these in a class this year, kinda hard to get right but really cool at the same time when they work.

I can make it go back and fourth without blinking, like it's playing ping-pong with the spinning leg
