I broke my dad's mountain bike, help please

This morning I wanted to go to the lake/get some exercise so I grabbed my dad's bike (I don't know why I didn't grab mine) and rode there. On the way back I was pedaling up a hill and the rear gears started grinding and the wheel stopped turning. I thought the chain had just come off but when I got off the bike I realized that the entire rear derailleur had snapped off and got tangled up in the spokes. I carried the bike to the house and found out that the thing holding the derailleur on had bent. No idea how it happened but it did. Sorry for the shitty pictures.

Here it is from the side, you can't really see it's bent but it gives you more of an idea of what the piece is. It's the thing on the far right.

Now my question: Is that one little piece replaceable? Or would I have to buy a whole fork?

It looks like you broke the derailleur hanger. Just bring it to a shop that sells the same brand as your bike, and ask them. They are usually pretty cheap.

your hanger for your derailleur snapped and then when you pedalled or shifted it got pulled into the spokes.

you will probly need a new rim/spokes, hanger, and derailleur if they are super bent.

The rim and spokes are fine, but why a new derailleur? It doesn't look like there's any damage to it itself... then again I know nothing about bikes...

Well I mean in came off... poor choice of words maybe? Is the derailleur part of the hanger or are they separate pieces? Go easy on me guys, I'm ignorant.

they are usually separate pieces but usually they get bent when that happens the derailleur gets bent but if not then you will probly just need at adjustment to get it shifting again.

Okay if it was just the hanger, then go to your local bike shop, buy a new one for around 10 bucks, and re-thread the chain. Also, look around in your garage for something that looks like this so that you can re-thread properly

Thanks! If the derailleur IS bent, is there a specific one I should be looking at? The possibly-broken one appears to be a shimano deore xt (it also says "integrated 8sis," not sure if that's part of the name). Are there specific ones I should avoid? I'm sure a bike shop would help me out but the nearest one is 45 minutes away...

RuggyRo, thanks for your help too. I actually have one of those sitting in my room, I was never really sure what it was...

If it's just a little bent then stick it in a vice and take some pliers and pull it back, but if it's completely fucked then go buy the same one that was on the bike before hand.

Here's the derailleur... Again with the shitty pictures but maybe someone could tell if it was bent? Again, I'm super sorry for my ignorance.

You have to hold it the way it was hanging to tell if the bottom cogs are bent or not, the sideways pictures won't show anything.

If it is broken youde want to determine if it is rapid rise or not (correct me if I'm wrong) and just make sure it is 8 spd again. Xt is fairly high end components just to let you know. That's probably like a fifty dollar part but it looks a bit older so could be harder to find. New probably like 85-100. I haven't rode in a while this could all be shinanagans.

It doesn't look to be in that bad of shape but you will need to get that chain back on there. Once you get a hanger put it on and try to shift gears and if it does shift properly then you're good but if not then get it adjusted or buy a new one.

Most derailleurs will have certain hangers for them but it depends. I'm not sure if the lower end derailleurs all use a universal hanger because there isn't much difference but i would call the shop and ask to make sure.

Bahaha I'm not worried about it, he knew before I made the thread. He just asked me to figure out what the broken parts were and replace them.

This won't help you in anyway but I broke this homeless alcoholic guys bike at the bar one night a few years back.

Was pretty drunk and someone was trying to get me to do a wheelie. I was doing some wheelies back and forth on it. Then decided to try to come out from the parking lot and launch off the lip into the road and do a 360. Never got more than 270. After a couple of those landing sideways going fast and eating shit I bent the wheel all fucked up I guess. It wouldn't ride. Me and this other guy bent it back, thought it was good enough.

Felt bad and gave him some money for it another day even though he'd gotten it fixed for free. Dude was so drunk he didn't remember me giving him money though. I was like wtf man.

Oh well.

Cool story hansel, don't fuck with peoples bikes I guess.
