Title says it all, life long skier, I know that I peaked a few years ago (31 now and a couple of knee surgeries) figured if I am going to deal with long lines this year, and a gf whos not the worlds fastest snow sport enthusiast. Why not teach an old dog new tricks? Goal is to be ripping blues by the end of the year. Anyone else picked it up just for something new?

I'm a snowboarder that usually skis once or twice a year (switching boots with friends), but this year I bought a pair of smash 7's with demo look bindings, knowing that they're not super nice, but I have had an absolute blast and I got a lot better even in one day than I thought I would be after 3 or 4 days of shredding. Idk this is kind of a rant but the point is do what you want to do and make it fun while you're doing it! especially if you could find some buddies who either want to learn with you or are beginners/low level intermediate to kind of push you to improve faster/push you harder.

I got into snowboarding a few years ago when years of flat landings and summer setups finally took a toll on my knees. I probably snowboard 75% of my days, but still love ripping some turns on skis. Snowboarding sucks to learn, but once you get the hang of it, its so fun. Its much easier on my body and I my knees feel so much better after a day of boarding compared to skiing. I can honestly say surfing pow is so much more fun on a board. Like someone already mentioned, flat spot and cat tracks suck, but you get used to it and plan routes around the mountain to avoid these areas. Have fun out there!

Started snowboarding a few years ago. Still a skier but 100% recommend it to anyome who hasn't tried it before cuz it is hella fun. Especially worth it on a good powder day or anytime you're out with less experienced people. Always good to challenge yourself

I'm planning on doing the same thing. Half of my friends board, and surfing pow looks so much fun.

It's all good. I can still love you, even if you are a traitor. Snowboarding is hard on knees too! Good luck!

Might get castrated for this post...

But does anyone ever flip back and forth between which they think is cooler? I know personally I've been watching a ton of snowboarding movies/edits this year (shoutout The Dustbox) which have been getting me super hyped to ride but a few years ago I wouldnt have thought shit about snowboarding. (I actually started snowboarding in middle school because all my friends skated, then switched to skiing when my friend showed me Revolver)

I have a snowboard setup since some shop was trying to dump inventory end of season so I got a board boots and bindings for $150 a few years ago. Slush snowboarding is where it's at, so surfy and all the parks are closed by late spring anyways. I found toeside turns easier at first since you pressure your shins in a similar way to skiing. Heelside feels bad imo, when you hit a bump it goes straight into your knees since you have to weight your heels, cant use the flex of your boot / ankles to soak.

Spent the last couple of years snowboarding, and the beginning of this season. I'll be back on ski's by Saturday. Oddly snowboarding fucks up my knee's more than skiing. Probably keep the snowboard gear for the hell of it.

I hate what a slow fuck I am buckling in.

Same here, I'm not sure how it got a reputation for being easier on your knees. Strapping in sucks, I would get burton step ons or the new k2 clickers if I were buying another setup.

Shits super fun. If you're super green find some flat terrain to work on. Biggedg thing is confidence. Keep some weight in your front foot when you lean into your turns. Force yourself to turn both ways. Usually getting both turns csn be tricky but start slow. Also sometimes starting on flat with one foot out and setting your heal or toe slightly off to pull you into the turn can help.

Also work on your connected s turns. That transition can be tricky. When you're in a turn you can keep doing it because you're on an edge, but flipping to flst base and then other edge is tricky. You'll hang an edge a few times learning but commit and keep your weight forward or center and you'll get it.

Snowboarding is fucking fun. Enjoy yourself!

I got one last year after skating all summer. Sean Petit also inspired me. I got injured skiing a lot but still managed to get a few good days of snowboarding in. I’m planning on doing a lot more this season. I don’t want to go pro or anything, just wanna be able to keep up with my snowboarder friends in the park.

Make Sean Petit ski again

yeah shredbots is good

Wow, times have changed. Back in the day when you turned 30 and felt like your prime skiing was behind you, that was when you start telemarking. Make sure to go around telling people how its REAL skiing and how they will never know how great it feels to drop a knee in a carve. Then go get a telemarking bumper sticker to seal the deal, double points if you can put it next to an Alta sticker.

In all seriousness though thats sweet to try boarding as something new. Its probably better to do with your GF as you are both going to be more at the same level and learning together.

Yea, I know an asswipe of folks that do both. Most it's a deal about true powder days, then they board. If not, they ski.

I learned to board many, many years ago with rented stuff.

Made my first true carving turns with one taller than I was.

In the end, I decided to just ski.

Anyway, it's all the same, we are riding the snow, just snowboarders need to work hard to impress me in terrain parks. Not too many can as easily as skiers.

Still I love most of them, as long as they are not dicks. I guess that's true in all things.

You just described my dad to a T. He did the exact same thing and still goes on about how he can rip harder than me and my brothers. He also constantly goes on about how telemarking is better in powder cuz he gets more face shots

your profile pic frightens me

I got some boots for this season. I think it will help out with my skiing through learning new tricks that were never on the table

specifically switching between the two will probably allow for some overlap in style and help me learn something completely new on skis

Oh don't worry I know how to Tele also. (quite bad at it through) pow turns in Tele will change your life, and bumps will make you hate yourself. Free your heel and your mind will follow. Drop knees not bombs.

heads up: toeside turns are a bitch.

FACTS. I have a setup I bought a couple years ago for the same reason as OP (except I’m 22, no knee surgery yet but I did fuck it up in high school). I love getting out t there on a snowboard because for me, it makes everything big again. Since I’ve been skiing for so long, there’s a lot of stuff that I don’t think twice about in terms of going big. On a board, I’m still dogshit so it forces me to push myself, which is something I always loved about skiing. This is the right idea OP!

I snowboarded a couple times last season for the first time on a friend's board and it was actually really fun. One thing that really sucks though is that your knees are now fair game for falling on. I also found toeside stops/turns easier than heelside which was weird.

First day on a board for me resulted in my tailbone being bruised so bad I couldn’t sit down for 3 days

Skied growing up til I was 13. Switched to snowboarding and did 20 years on nothing but snowboards. Been back on skis for 6 years. Snowboarding is like flip the switch off and have carefree fun. Skiing is like be fully engaged mentally and think about what's going on during the process. I get way more out of skiing. Way more satisfying. I think there is a lot more depth in skiing. There's a lot more to the process. But snowboarding is hella fun.

I also do a lot of backcountry and there is no comparison there. Skis are a way better tool for touring than splitboards for all sorts of reasons.
