I asked all the snowboarders i know, why they like snowboarding better than freestyle skiing, and heres the answer i got -'its our own thing man, we're just trying to be different than every stiff ass prick skier there is. There's something cool about a sport that few people do.'

OK where should i start? This sorta shows the hypocrisy in major sports today. People wanna be part of something cool, new and growing. However, snowboarding has been here for over 30 years, and newschool skiing pbly only for a decent 5 years. Not only that but they also have no idea about any other sports, especially skiing because apparently we are all 'stiff ass pricks', whereas they are doing there own thing. WTF? This just shows sheer stupidity, so your allowed to do your own thing and be cool, but the rest of us who do our own thing are pricks? I just find it kinda irritating, these people never really tried this shit, but their puttin it down. How can our sport really progress and become more popular when this is the mindset of almost every kid who goes to the slopes? We cant change these peoples minds, because they dont give a shit, or are too ignorant to see what they are actually saying. I'm not sayin i want newschool to go totally mainstream, i just want a bit more respect from fellow athletes, sorta like professional courtesy, and it sorta pains to be gettin shit for somethin that i devote countless hours and large amounts of money doing. A lot of you guys are pbly gonna say who cares? The point is, its hurting our sport. If we dont get support than say goodbye to pioneers like jason levinthal, and Mike Douglas, and new companies starting up. A lot of you will also say that 'just ski to ski', if that was the case with every pro, our sport wouldnt have gotten very far to begin with. I mean, how would you feel if you spent hours and hours trying to perfect a trick, or just land it, and you get shit for doing it. After a while it becomes really frustrating. just my 2 cents.

its not really they're own thing anymore. theres sooo many damn 'posers' in snowboarding. there is this one like 35 year old dude that goes to okemo every weekend...snowboards in the sobe pipe all day...and still sucks a fat one cause he has no balls or style but thinks he's the shit. its funny. he gets pissed when theres comps cause then he can't ride the pipe...but would he ever enter in the pipe comps...no. not like its that crazy competitive either. he just likes to think he's cool cause he rides pipe all day. come to think of it i'm sure he rides pipe all night too.

it's funny. because as much as we want skiing to grow and progress...it'd be no fun seeing it like snowboarding is now. i don't want to see kids skiing and never trying snowboarding because its not the 'cool' thing to go do. and i don't want to see a whole bunch of jackasses on skis fucking up the park like the shitty as snowboarders do here. example. last spring my bf was standing on the side deck of a jump spotting me and such...some little dipshit on a snowboard that couldn't even carve a turn slammed into him while he was just standing there and put a gash in the sidewall of his new skis.

I was skiing at this tiny little hill last year, size of bunny hill but decent small table. There was about 30 snowboarders around, only 1 was hitting it, the rest were being 'cool'

 
I'm just waiting for the day when more people (snowboards specifically - but some skiers too) realize that it is not about one plank or two, its about going out and ripping whether its in the park, pipe, on-piste or off-piste. Personally I ski with a lot of snowboarders cause they are the ones that push me. To me its all about fun and pushing my limits, and whether people are on skis or a snowboard is irrelevant.

dude petek you are such a dumbass. He never put down skiing, snowboarding hasnt been around for 30 years, and skiing is way older than snowboarding. His answer was the exact reason i love snowboarders. the really good ones are individuals who progress to be different. they want to do something different that isnt stuck up skiing. And face it, most skiers are stuck up pricks. I dont even understand your argument, i think you are just retarded. sorry

Petek, what exactly is your beef here? Is it that some guy didn’t like your sport? That you don’t have the respect of the industry that you want, or that too many people want to do the same thing that you are? Or the fact that there are people out there that just like to be a part of a crowd? Or is it that this guy thought that Snowboarding was more rebellious than Newschool?

If it is the first one, I’m sorry this guy got under your skin, but its just one guy, so who cares?

If this is more about someone chalking your sport up because they don’t know enough about it, well that is just an assumption that they are making, isn’t it? Pardon my saying though, but it sounds a bit like you are doing the same thing though. Why do you need to change anyone else’s minds? Why does it matter what anyone thinks about what you are doing, and why in gods name are you so hung up on what everyone thinks about what you are doing?

Do you want a sport you can call your own and not let anyone else do it, and damn anyone that disses you, or do you want a sport that you can watch grow and be a part of, and want better skis and clothes and respect from the community that comes with mainstream knowledge and acceptance? What exactly is hurting our sport? A lack of respect? Respect from whom? Do you think what one guy thinks is going to really matter? Or do you think what the resorts and the manufacturers whom are pretty much stoked as hell to see another trend in snow sports and in one way or anther – trust me on this one – respect you because you are spending money, and if that means more tables and more rails and turned up tails and baggy pants that come with studs on them, then so be it. You have the respect of the industry because you are a consumer. That goes for Freeze (A division of Time Warner) Salomon (A division of Adidas) and probably your local hill too. You want respect? You have it! Look at the sheer volume of dollars that companies spend to market right to you!

So whom do you want the respect from? The guy on the snowboard who may or may not have any idea what he is talking about, or from the industry that is around to make money from you? Why don’t you just go ahead and ski and respect yourself and your friends and not sweat it so much?

And just one last question, what is so wrong with a 35-year-old guy riding pipe every weekend? Don’t you want that to be you when you are that old? Give the guy a break; he’s just out there doing his thing, just like you are.

 
Well... pretty much any post after that is useless... but anyway i wouldn't defend the pipe rider. I've seen plenty of people like that guy, they think they own the mountain. Like 5 years ago at this race I was inspecting the course with my team and this lady comes wedging down the course, stops by us for a second then starts screaming at our coach that we are ruining her weekend and she demands her money back from the mountain and then just kind of yells nonesense about us being in her way for another 5 minutes. There are plenty of assholes just like them, and really, i think they deserved to be pushed off a chair. Other than that, there are good skiers and bad skier, good boarders and bad boarders. The good skiers and boarders seem to respect each other as far as I've seen, and the rest, well they're just consumers, just like us and they pay to keep the mounatins open for us. So next time a snowboarder doesn't give you any respect, give him the finger, go to the slopes and float i nice big flat five over his head or something.

A good example though that were up-to-par with boarders is if you see a 2002 snowboard movie, and then watch a candide segment its quite funny, candide clears the whole fuckin hip and the boarders look like they're just droppikng down the side, but then again, superpark wouldn't even be half as good as it is without snowboarders, niether would any park, infact i'd wonder if there would be any park out of north america, i mean, both sports progress the level in different ways... Yeap..

yeha but if you look at it the majority of snowboarders HATE skiers. im sure if you asked that question to 100 snowboarders you would get the same answer at least 70 times. they dont have any respect for us at all. i myself respect the snowboarders out htere that are either trying to learn new things or are already ripping it up. they boarders i cant stand are the ones that sit up at the top of the park all day long and talk tlak talk but cant do a rail if his life depended on it, and even though they can't do anything on that board, its still ok for them to talk shit bout skiiers after they switch 3 a 40 footer because they ar e cool.

 
I've been snowboarding for 7 years now, my friend lended me his Mike Nick 142s last year and I fell in love with skiing. This season I'll be snowboarding and skiing.

The main reason I've been snowboarding is cuz it's fun and challenging. The reason I decided to ski more this year cuz it's different and there's tricks I want to master. Majority of my friends is snowboarders. These snowboard equipments is lot cheaper than ski equipments is few years ago, now the prices are going down as it seems to be.

I will not lie, most skiers I've met on the slopes is bunch of up-tight assholes. Again, asshole snowboarders do exists, it's just that most assholes I've met is skiers... I dont snub off people until they disrespects me and my friends.

I noticed that some of you guys have some issues with snowboarders and skiboarders. That's what mainly caused these bad attitudes on the hills. Just stop acting like a bitch and follow resorts' etiquette, then everyone will follow like lemmings.

Be thankful to skiboard industry.. They're the ones that made newschool skiing grow.

midwest rep...the first snowboard ridden on the east coast was at stratton around 1965...that'd be over 30 years that it has been around so you're wrong. they claim it was the first real snowboard ever on a mountain. i don't know about that one though.

i don't think petek started this thread because he wanted to bash snowboarders...many of the people on this site, myself included, ride with boarders on a regular basis and have a ton of respect for them. of course there are many on the mountain that are complete jackasses, and those tend to be the ones that aren't any good anyway. petek just found it ironic that in asking snowboarders why the board instead of ride they claim it as their 'own' thing. it used to be like that now its as marketed as a winter activity can be.

This reminds me of a story.

I was up at my local shitty hill, and my friend was jibbing this black tube thing on top of the hill. These boarders come and sit on it and start talking. My friend asks them nicely if they can get up because he was jibbing it. They just looked at him and said 'no, skiing is gay'. We all just looked at him and was like 'if we suck so bad, why don't u go show us up on the hill instead of talking shit'. So we convince them to go hit this 15 ft. table, and each one of them hit it and reached for a grab and couldnt make it. One of them fell. So we showed them up w/ a mute 3 and a switch 3 safety.

The point is, usually the kids hating on skiiers need to feel cool because they suck at boarding.

yeah, i wuit reading but i did read something about a sled... and personally, im intending to sled this sick line at my mountain if i can find a way to get the sled up the lifts. and other than that, its about personal satisfaction and making your own loser clique that laughs at snowboarders like they do at you.

who cares how many people do whatever sport you do/ it is now about how cool you are or how you look it is about doing something that you love something that makes you feel all warm inside. i dont know about you but all i can think about everyday right now is skiing i love the sport and no matter if it was not the cool think to do like snowboarding is today i would still do it because it is my life
