I am no longer allowed to....

don't be such a righteous dick. downloading music is practically a part of the industry now.

soulseek. bearshare. kazaa lite maybe?

anyways, i hear only good things about soulseek.

you go out and get a band. win your high school battle of the bands. play local shows. get attention. make a cd. have someone share it on one of those programs. now have no one buy that CD. all the money and work you put into it is gone.

thats an extreme example, but its not righteous, its what is the norm in society. people buy cds and should continue to do so if they like a bands music. it supports them to make more. limewire just "gains attention"

I don't care if they get ripped off, in my opinion they should be taken out and shot. But anyways, by having free downloading on the internet it makes it that much harder for a new band to really get started and be able to devote all their time to music. Do you really need to make the almost impossible task of making a living as a musician even harder?

unless you get a big break and signed by a major label fast, without CD sales, there isnt really a good way to build and expand your music. you have to support the bands you like. if they are wealthy already, then whatever if you feel that strongly against actually buying their shit, go ahead.

the thing is most bands starting out don't have shit on downloading sites like limewire...which allows them to grow..i mean.. example... Fall Out Boy..NO ONE had like ever heard of them till this year.. of couse they had been in a band for quite a few years.. and made many songs..and i think they are doing pretty well.. they might be living a lil more than comefortably if u ask me..

i don't have a problem with buying their cd's its just a bitch to buy the cd's when all i want is one song.. i don't know about you guys but i don't have that kind of money to spend..

haha no one? really? because ive seen them many times before this year. actually, i really started liking them a few years ago...

fall out boy started with their shit on mp3.com and by word of mouth on forms and stuff. this is voluntary. this isnt their whole cd avalible in album quality to download.

dude i do it too, im just saying NOT supporting them isnt "part of the industry" and accepted like someone up there said.

It's not hurting the bands too much. And anyways, this works for the better, if you havn't noticed, our economy has been based on entertainment for this past generation, if less people buy their CDs, they make less money, become less rich, balace the economy a bit and give money in people's pockets...now if we can only find a more effient way to sneak into movie theaters and sports games...

i remember when fallout boy came out with fellowship of the nerd and dead on arrival and shit... ahhh seems so long ago. i saw them open up for bands in shitty venues in worcester.

yes! they were better back then if thats possible. i mean you actually connected with them. everyone at the shows went because they knew they would have a good time. now its because everyones doing it and "oh that sugar were going down song is pretty good, and alot of hot girls there"

You couldn't be more wrong on this.

Being able to download music for free has opened the doors for so many aspiring artists. The internet and the wide-spread of mp3s has given a platform for underground artists to be heard.

Most people aren't going to go out and buy a cd from an artist they've never heard of. But through the internet people from all over the world can discover and sample some music from bands across the globe. If people believe in a band and like their music, they WILL support them.

It's free marketing. Free exposure. And the technology is here to stay. So you can either realize that, take advantage of all the new opportunities it provides, or die trying to fight it.

I am an underground artist and I have been given opportunities from studios, labels, maangers, and other artists almost entirely because of my 'free downloadable music.' which supposedly makes it that much harder for me to get started, right?

if not for 'illegal' filesharing, i would probably still be listening to some shitty radio rock. i download, if its good and they need the money, ill buy the album.

Bands actually make near nothing off of their albums. The real money comes from concerts.

yeah, once the band signs a record deal, most of the profits or losses are absorbed by the label. artists make small royalties, like 8 cents for a 20-dollar cd. so next time you feel proud about puttin down your hard earned cash on a cd, just remeber that your 20 bucks is probobly going towards coffee and donuts at the next investors' meeting.

Good point. Whenever I hear of a interesting singer or band I haven't heard before, I'll go home and download a few of their songs. If I like them, I buy their CD.
