Hyland Ski Resort listed "Best of the Midwest" in Freeskier Resort Issue

I thought this was pretty awesome that Hyland made the list of best ski resorts in the Midwest in the Oct. Resort Issue of Freeskier. Only 11 resorts were listed in this category, and another MN resort, Spirit Mountain, also made the cut. Way to go Hyland!

Sorry but no it was not. Here is the list, and they aren't rated in any particular order

Boyne Mtn. MI., Chestnut Mtn Resort,IL., Crystal Mtn., MI, Hyland Ski Resort, MN., Jack Frost/Big Boulder, PA., Mad River,OH., Nubs Nob, MI., Sevens Springs, PA., Spirit Mtn.,MN., Sundown Mtn, IA. and Tyrol Basin, WI.

ha thanks, and i must say as much as i love spirit, granite is better.

and allen i'd also like to hear why freeskier isnt legit.

it would be nice to see something like Freeze, bring a little more raw lifestyle and skiing to offset the likes of Freeskier, and Ski magazine. Powder has it pretty much right on for the demographic of the pounder hound ski bum.

Yeah it's hard to look at any rankings or reviews in freeskier without seriously questioning them. I can think of at least 4 resorts that should be on this list.

The other hills probably had to pay to get in the magazine, sort of like ad space, except with an interview and summary of the shop hyping it up.

I don't get Freeskier so I don't have it in front of me and all I have to go off of is what is in this thread, but if it's a 'Best of the Midwest', shouldn't it be based on facts/(maybe a little bit of opinion), not treated like ad space? It's a review from the magazine, nobody should have to pay for their name to be in a review that the magazine itself is putting out.
And what Allen said... since when is PA Midwest? I think Freeskier needs a geography lesson. See figure A below.

^Hahahaha, that is pretty bad. It's the first thing I noticed after seeing Hyland mentioned....PA the midwest!?! How can they make such an obvious mistake really.

hyland could be so much more legit.....

they do an ok job but everything ride on gets so old, they have so much potential.

i heard that they cant because of some liability thing? but then they put a plastic tube shooting you up 10ft+ off the deck? and a wallride w/ a 15ft drop to flat on 3/4 sides?

silly hyland

they have to use the park districts insurance, which isn't really meant for ski areas...plus all the workers are union, which is why grooming isn't great cause they only get so many hours to groom the whole hill, so the park suffers.

lol hyland. lol spirit. I would rather ride at Trollhaugen or Wild over Hyland or Spirit any day. How did Granite not make it?
Freeskier is the gayest.

troll or afton! i don't give wild that much credit.
and yeah we know, freeskier is commercialized just like much of the sport is becoming. as far as our little community goes, hyland and spirit are pretty much the two most commercialized resorts. so yeah, it makes sense i guess.. freeskier really is the gayest.

AND Afton. The true BEST resort, in the Midwest is Lutsen. May not have the greatest park, but by far the best RESORT around here.

Well, it is a matter of reporting on the quality of parks. It is evident when ridding certain parks that the ski area spends very little time and money on their park, they simply do not care. Whereas some ski areas, chestnut for example salaries an employee who has been to cutters camp (paid for by the ski area), and pushes snow for a minimum of an hour and a half or more every morning and the ski area pays a very good wage for a digger or more to walk around and fine tune the features. As a publication they should give credit where credit is due as they did with chestnut, but there are better ski areas around than Sundown that most people do not know about that deserve recognition in a list in a specialized periodical.

In Transworld Snowboarding Granite Peak just got #1 for the midwest and they aren't even listed in the Freeskier issue

PA is like midwest skiing... not saying its IN the midwest... but the hills / terrain are very similar to the midwest there. The rest of the East actually has mountains, real ones you could say. I thnk thats why they categorize it like that. Plus PA is right next to OH and Ohio is def midwest, so when you combine crews, have comps that kids travel to I could see what they meant to do by calling seven springs midwest. (even though its not in the midwest)

I definitely agree that this article is a little bunk!

I am not disputing that Hyland, Tyrol or Granite, should be on the list...

But they cannot visit these resorts to make their determinations for this review because if that were the case... Marquette Mountain, should have atleast been considered. We had the Biggest jumps in the midwest, and multiple parks for all levels... I shure think we would have beaten out Sundown , IA , Ha,

Mt. Bohemia is supposedly really difficult and totally ungroomed also.

Crystal Mountain is pretty lame in Michigan. Nubs and Boyne typically have better parks. I think they should have included a resort in the UP atleast and taken nubs out.

I don't think so. Tyrol Basin is broke as hell and Granite Peak is rich as hell and Tyrol made the list and Granite did not.

Also, sundown is poor as hell too and does not invest enough money or resources into their park...they simply do not care anymore about having a park...they even fired their park manager at the end of last season...he just got a job at park city...I have only lived in this area for two years so all I know about the surrounding ski areas is what people say once was...but i did work at sundown for one year before being offered a job across the river and that is one poorly run operation at sundown with no effort to capture their future customers (youngpark rats of today who will have kids tomorrow)...they will even pull a locals pass for spinning slightly of axis...all in all if an industry publication is going to publish information about an area that they specialize in they need to do some f@&kin' research...Would it make any sense if SAM magazine wrote an article stating that devils head has perfectly maintained chairlifts?

Yeah I'm also really confused about how no Upper Peninsula resorts got on the list. I thought they were supposed to have the best resorts in the midwest. I also could believe that some of the resorts paid to be included. The midwest page seemed pretty similar to how they do the "Shop Profiles" in the back, and I believe all those shops pay to have that space and "interview" (advertisement).
