Hydraulic Camcorder Jib (help)

Ive been looking around for hours and I cant seem to find a good way to replicate this jib.

I love the fact that its hydraulic. With it being hydraulic it can pan and tilt smoothly from the controls on the bottom of it. The problem I'm having with the design is where to find those kind of hydraulic struts or pistons. Did he just take a regular gas spring hydraulic piston and tap it??

If anyone has any ideas please share.

I'm very interested in trying to recreate it. Something like that bought from a company

I'm guessing would cost thousands of dollars if not even 10's of thousands. If I projected the cost right I would say this would be anywhere from 100-200 depending on the parts you already have.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any shots of it in action but I will make a duplicate and post results. Ive already begun finding parts and pricing it out.

That's super dope, I bet the shots are crazy smooth. I really want to see how this turns out.

Got all the information i need. I will be ordering the parts over the weekend and will have it built hopefully by the following weekend. Will post video results.

wow thats too sick, me and my friends were just considering building a jib crane minus the whole hydraulic thing cuz were kinda inexperienced on these lol really want to see how those videos turn out

Wow thats soooooo amazing i would never take the time to do something like that but ill probably make some janky thing that will fall apart

UPDATE...

I have most of the parts and am working on putting it together... I finally figured out the type of cylinder he is using...

A pneumatic cylinder.

This is definitely taking a lot longer than I expected. But here is an update after 2 full days of working on it.

Let me know what you think.

turning out sick so far man, i like it.
can you give a list of parts/total cost/ steps to doing it? If it turns out sick i definitely want to make one myself. and video too would be sick

that is quite the contraption. interested to see how it comes out. you need a beefier tripod!

Any idea on a tripod are welcome. I currently don't have any better ideas for it.

I took some shots with the jib/boom today. I will upload and post later today.

Shots are sick.

Here are some more pictures from today...

For those who were wondering about the plans... Here is what I sketched up as a prototype. The actual Jib/Crane has slight variations to the plans that I adjusted from the supplies I had.

I like taking pictures sideways sorry...

Pricing some things out...

Aluminum = ~$ 80

Bolts = ~$ 35

Screen (of ebay used) = $50

Lanc controller and cable = ~$ 50

Still working on getting a set of pneumatic cylinders as I just found out that's what I need.

If you buy them from a company custom made there about $20 a piece and you need 4.

If you plan on making this have a friend help you... Ive done most of what you see solo and it's a pain in the ass.

Holy shit, if you get that to work, I will literally shit (in a toilet of course). That's so sick, and probably a bitch to recreate; I've always wondered how they got the cameras to move as they had them on the crane - I guess this is how, huh?

So dope, keep up the good work mang! Can't wait for the next update.

I got a bid on some on ebay now.. so I hope to have this done in 2-3 weeks tops. Taking a lot longer then I originally expected. Def worth it tho.

my threads.

how would you say my chances are of being able to do this with no experience building shit. maybe without all the hydrolic stuff.

but its looking sick man cant wait to see some video from it

Well I built the whole thing in my basement.... using nothing more then a tape measure some clamps and a power drill. So it's definitely possible just take your time and measure everything twice.

I got the cylinders in last week I havent really had much time to work on it.. I did have a little sesh in my yard 2 weeks ago and we filmed some shots... ill try to upload those in the near future.

This stuff is intense, I built a jib like this a few years ago and was trying to figure out a way to make the head move, this would have solved my confusion. Good work man! Definitely post some samples when you get the hydraulic parts working!

Its not 100% done but it works just like the video shows up a few posts and we used it like that to film a backyard sesh.. or actually it was my front yard. Ill try and throw a little edit together and upload it later tonight.

Sorry guys been really busy with work and other things (call of duty modern warfare 2) I haven't forgot about it I just haven't done it yet, It will be up when I get around to it. hopefully soon
