to those of you who don't know -

gatorade or powerade is entirely a marketing ploy.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO OBTAIN GLUCOSE - but more important to obtain water.... you need it for everything.

If you watch the most talented players in the world (not football or baseball or basketball players) they drink a shot of gatorade/powerade and a big bottle of water.

we are talking about soccer and tennis players - they consume colored beverages that contain potassium, a small amount of glucose, and a lot of water. gatorade is definitely a good product; but it is more advertisement than anything else. water makes the body run. excercise is what helps the muscles perform when they need to, and they need water.

go look oral rehydration therapy. there's a wiki page you can read through. you'll find that salts and sugars are essential in rehydration. Water is obviously the most important, but the other 2 are needed and vital for survival. So no, it's not entirely a marketing ploy.

Do either Gatorade, Powerade, or Coke have Glucose in them? I am willing to be they have lots of sucrose, but not much of any glucose.

pure water contains no electolytes. tap water does contain them, but not necessarily the right ones. The body is after NaCl and KCl and a couple other salts in particular. And in order for them to be obsorbed in the intestine glucose is essencial. Water does not have any sugars and it has very minimal amounts if not any of the required salts.

looked up nutrition facts for Gatorade and guarenteed that besides sugar there will be sodium and potassium.

glucose is one of the components of sucrose. Your body breaks down sucrose into its components, those being glucose and fructose. That and also they all put glucose directly in their drinks. It normally goes by 'dextrose' in the food industry.

i dids it, and i usually just drink wanter cause im too cheap to buy bottles of gatorade. it does taste so yummy...

This is the rough draft to the final draft. To any critics, my Chi-squared may be incorrect haven't had time to double check.

To answer some questions some may have:

For a low intensity workout less than 1 hour water is better to use.

However for a high intensity workout greater then one hour a drink that contain some salt(sodium) and some sugar(glucose) helps your body sustain energy and keeps you hydrated.

It does not technically have to be a "sports drink", soda can get the job done as well. Main difference is only carbonation. Example: google coke ingredients, and Gatorade ingredients and compare.

With the data I found I am 95% sure consumers do have preferences in drinks they consume in high and low intensity workouts.

Thanks everyone for the help!
