Huck & Splash

This is a group promoting Ted Shred's plan to build a water ramp park in Denver. There are many revolutionary ideas which will make Huck & Splash, the best splash pool anywhere. For example this will be the first water ramp facility to duplicate the feel of park jumps. It will be made with the snowflex technology, so you can carve off; even switch.

There are plenty of water ramps around the country, so why do we need another one? All of the other facilities have been able to create a tranny and lip similar to a terrain park jump, but none of them have been able to duplicate the landing angle. If you've ever tried doing a flip off of a 3 meter diving board and came up short or went too far around, you would know that it hurts. Part of that is because the pool probably doesn't have a bubbler system, but the other reason is because you are hitting the water almost vertically. The steeper you go in the harder the landing and the same thing applies to snow.

The pool at Huck & Splash will be elevated above the ground. The largest jumps will have a tranny that drops in excess of 10 feet below the level of the water. That way we can launch you 80 to 120 feet out into the bubbled pool and you will still be hitting the water at about 30 to 35 degrees.

My goal is to make it so your worst wetcat wreck off the biggest ramp we have won't hurt at all. You can try anything that you can dream up, without worrying about trashing yourself. The pros will be there because it will be the best place for them to learn new stuff too. All the new tricks you will be seeing at future Winter X Games will go down at Huck & Splash first.

In addition to park step downs, we want to have step ups, cliff drops, canon style launch boxes, and even a feature that has about 10 to 15 mogul turns into a freestyle mogul kicker. That will give the Colorado USSA and FIS mogul competitors a huge advantage over everyone else.

The place will be wheel chair friendly so guys like Felix Snow and K-J Vander Klooster can learn how to misty their mono skis. How cool would that be?

Huck and Splash is also going to be built to be a multimedia Mecca. Every jump will have multiple cameras tied into a TIVO system. You will be able to hop out of the pool and immediately check out your last effort from 3 or 4 different perspectives. We will have tunes going, and the whole thing will be like having an expression session with your buds. It's going to be like uploading yourself into an action video game.

It would be great to have your support to really kick this into full gear. Right now we want to be able to show the hosting Rec District how stoked people are to have something like this in their back yard. We are also trying to get foundations to assist in grant funding for the facility. The foundations would be organizations that promote outdoor activity, clean lifestyles, and outreach to underprivileged youth. They could also be foundations or groups whose mission is to combat childhood obesity. Other possible types of charitable organizations could be groups who assist in providing funding for activities for children and adults with physical or mental disabilities. If you are reading this and you have contacts with anyone who has pull with these types of foundations, please get in touch with us.

Spread the word and let's make it happen!!!https://www.newschoolers.com/web/content/viewcult/action/view/id/4503/

currently we are looking for private donations, sponsors and foothills recreation park. We have one sponsor but they prefer to remain private as of now, and foothills will be paying for most of it because they will be receiving the rent for the jumps.

Mods: Although this will be located in Colorado it has the potential to benefit skiers across the country so I think it should be in Ski Gabber.

I doubt they sift through each region very often, so this guy should PM them about it. I'm sure they will move it over.

well i made one and out it in colorado regionals then I made another thread putting that in ski gabber. That was moved over to CO regionals.

Thanks for the tip on Ohio Dreams. Pretty cool stuff; first time I've heard of them. Don't get me wrong. I don't want to be dissin on Ohio Dreams or Woodward. The summer x games wouldn't be fun to watch with Woodward, and if splash pools weren't around we would all probably be doing on axis flips and spins with grabs. Someone had to figure out how to get off axis and that first happened into the water.

Huck and Splash is still way different from Ohio Dreams even though it's cool that their using snowflex or something like it. Check out their video and look at how steep those guys are hitting the water and how small the bubbled landing is. If you miss that, it would suck! On snow, the only time you are going to be falling out of the sky like that would be off a transfer hit or something with a 45 degree or steeper landing. The only way to duplicate the same speed and landing angle that you would get off a park hit is to bring the trannies below the level of the water. I've been looking at this for 10 years and there is no other way. Also, if you're carving in switch can you really hit a ten foot circle of bubbles?

I told the guy who runs the splash pool at Blackcomb how I wanted to build this, and he said "duh, that makes sense. Why didn't we build ours like that?' No lie!!! If this works as good as I am hoping it will, it won't take long to throw one up for the East Coasters. The other thing is that I don't want you guys to have to go to "camp". This place is all about show up, gear up and go off! Whatever newer than New School is, I want to be checking it out first. http://www.huckandsplash.com

fyi, it doesnt hurt if you miss the bubbles, well unless you backflop, but that will hurt pretty much anyway you look at it.

Thanks. No disrespect, if it doesn't hurt to miss the bubbles, that's awesome. I want to make it so that even if you over rotated a layout backflip, it won't hurt. Gandolf has ramped at Blackcomb. He said that it hurts if you miss the bubbles. I have also talked with a ton of people who have ramped at Steamboat. The Blackcomb guys told me that one of their biggest problems is that guys frequently break their skies in half. If you are still moving forward when you hit the water, the impact is less. Getting the entry angle right is huge. At least you won't have to worry about busting your sticks. When you're standing at the top of the ramp, I want you to be thinking about the best way to style out your trick, instead of how painful it will be if you land wrong.

I spent about an hour on the phone talking to a guy who builds the money booters for the US Open and other events. The guy is a stud and I wish I could remember his name. I couldn't find his contact info, but he gave me a ton of good info. He has probably built more mega step downs than anyone and he always guinea pigs them himself; usually at about 2 AM with the jump lit by the lights of the cat he built it with. There is a science behind building a jump. If the jump is too lippy, you get tossed; if the take off is too steep, it's really tough to make it to the landing, if it's too flat, you don't get enough height and it's easy to overshoot the landing. His thing was do whatever you have to with the jump so that the jumper will glide down onto about a 35 degree slope.

Check out the attached photo. The diagram shows what I'm talking about. It was written more for insurance types.

yeah, i've ramped at steamboat, and i have to say, breaking skis is super annoying, if this helps with that, then YAY! also having it in denver would be awesome. i was in no way detracting from the idea of making this, i think its great and will be more widely used in a metropolitan area, i was just pointing out that at steamboat the bubbles dont make a whole lot of difference.

oh, and that is the mogul jump at steamboat, their park jump has a different angle, but cannot be seen as it is on the other side of the single.

Thanks again for the info. That's good to know about the bubbler system at Steamboat. I found the group that built that sytem for them and I was going to use them for mine. They paid about $5k for that thing. It was really tough to find anyone who had expereince building a bubbler system. The ones that they have in competitive diving pools are actually built into the pool. I didn't want mine to be that way, because there's no way to determine exactly where people are going to be landing off of each jump until we actually start jumping. My system will be portable on the bottom of the pool. I'll be able to put on some scube gear, go do and reposition the heads to get the bubbles where they need to be.

My buddy that I carpool with gave me another idea. He grew up as a SoCal surfer boy and he reminded me about getting stuck in the foam after a wipeout. It's terrifying because there isn't enough density to swim in it. You're kicking as hard as you can, but you can't make it to the surface. He thought it might be good to add a mild, biofriendly sudsing agent to the water. That could soften the surface tension of the water even more. It will also make the surface look even more like snow.

Hey,
Here are a few things from my experience of trying and opening up new ventures. I'm not hating as you read this. YOU need to fund this. Relying on private donations and sponsors will not cut it. It seems like it works in a perfect world, but this is not a perfect world. Take a few business courses for personal development. Sit down with friends, family, fellow skiers, other water parks, ski resort managers and business owners and write a lengthy and well understood and written business plan. Take this business plan and your great idea to MULTIPLE banks and do your best to sale them on the concept. I really think you have something here that could come to fruition. What needs to be done is the above though. I've been in your boat and the only way things start to happen is if you take control. You can't rely on other people (i.e. sponsors, donations, free rent for a period of time).I'm not hating at all. I'm just saying this from experience. I live in Denver and would get a season pass if not try to work there at nights if this project came through. PM me if you would like to hear from some more of my past experiences. Most of them are from cable wakeboard parks which has a similar concept and low overhead as I see this having. It is also in the same genre, action sports. I see you started this thread almost two months ago. Where is your development at this time? Have things started rolling. Summer is upon us and this is a prime time for building and construction. I'd hate to waste time and extra seasons. I know the website is running, but what else is going on with "Huck & Splash?"Thanks for reading and shred till the snow melts.

Banks won't touch this, but point taken. Time to put up or shut up. I will be amping it up now that the season's winding down. Keep the faith. I won't quit on this thing. Shred

even at the park city water ramps they have bubblers and it still hurts. also, if you plan on going 80 feet into the water, even if the angle isnt as steep thats gonna hurt. youll hit, stop and then faceplant. im down for water ramps but i dont think its new and revolutionary or anything
