Howard Stern Show / Rollerblading Gay / Brain Shima Response

Apparently pro skateboarder Jason Ellis was on the Howard Stern show and they spent awhile talking about how rollerblading is gay, the usual reponse to the sport. In response, Brian Shima, pro inline skater and legend fired back with an email that I thought made sense and might be worth posting on NS. I'm not posting this to personally debate, but just thought it would be worth sharing since everyone trashes inline on NS. Click below to see the email that was posted on Be-mag message board and the article I found about it from One magazine. I don't know if it's definately Shima, but whoever wrote it made a valid arguement.

People call a lot of sports gay, but rollerbladers always get butthurt, just get over it fags.

haha you obviously have never heard the jason ellis show. by the way, he killed it so hard on howard stern. pretty much cemented his success in radio.

On the last page of that thread it says that it wasn't shima. IMO don't give a siht about what other people think, freakouts are exactly what makes it funny.

i hope that wasnt shima who wrote that because that was the worst counter pointed email ever. the kid who wrote that reinforced that rollerblading is gay

I call it fruit booting despite the fact that I did it today. The sport is gay just like skiing but you can still like girls if you do them.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL This is funny. Take the best of the best, and blading completely ruins boarding trick for trick and style for style. Skateboarding may have a better rep with the "hipsters" and the punk and cool kids, but side by side, blading wins by far - street and vert over blading. Big tricks? Have you ever seen a boarder land the 666 rail? How bout the 30 kink? seriousy think about it.

rollerbladers can lock in and they dont have to worry about the boots falling off their feet.... and bladers beat skaters in style? ok... yeah thats a pretty dumb statement seeing how skaters and rollerbladers have been around since the first xgames and skaters are still here while bladers arent... i doubt you really know anything about either sport.

bahahahahah are you really using the xgames to comment on skate versus rollerblade style? the xgames doesnt give two shits about style or anything else. they care about one thing, $$$$$$$$$$$

i thought the email was actually half decent, sarcastic, but still made him seem a hell of a lot more mature than most responses to comments like would be.

um, yeah but look at the state of skating....

They got rid of vert and street's a fucking joke. The only redeeming thing is Big Air, but even that is too fucking retarded to be feasible in the real world.

Also, you can't judge style by whether it's featured in the X games or not. That's a horrible thing to say. You really show us alot about your age and ability to reason by making statements like that. ahahahah. Also, skaters CAN lock in - but it still takes balance..

Oh lord. I skate and blade. Competed a little in both, but grew out of it. I know what I'm talking about.

I didn't know whether I should reply because what you said just makes no sense at all.

yeah ellis will rip you a new one if you try to defend blading. call 1-866-YO-FACTION if you don't believe, you won't win the arguement

you that dumb? ive been listening to him for years. im not defending blading by any means if you can read you jackass, youll see that. blading is gay.

and to the kids above me. if a sport has style, that means it looks good- which in turn brings people to watch it. a 1080 california roll (no grab all tucked up like a dick) compared to a 900 melon... there is no comparison. same with a switch 7 in blading to a rodeo 5 in skate. try to say blading looks better... x-games bases it on ratings and theres a reason why blading had the worst ratings since barefoot waterskiing. fucking pathetic to say otherwise. it looks like shit. street skate is tech and has style, without compromising the translating aspect so people can relate to it more than some jackass doing 5 different grinds on the same rail that resembles some gay dance. honestly youd have to be a retard to think blading in the same comp setting as skating looks more baller.

why else would bladers do more rediuclous, high-risk stunts in movies than skating? its cause they cant be compared. sorry but thats the truth.

when it comes down to it, my opinion is that bladers do more rediculous stunt moves, but that will always be below the tech and way illin shit skaters do. in the end the fact remains, blades are attached to your feet. grabbing your blades like they're gonna fall off is really fucking gay compared to a sport in the same setting- such as skating. (with that comment dont try to say "oh grabbing skis is awesome even though they're not gonna fall off!").

one more thing. if you feel insulted by ellis, youre a retard for even being sucked in and crying over it.

When people respond to insults about inline it's because people feel it hurts the industry not themselves personally. People who still skate don't give two shits about being insulted or they wouldn't be skating. If you read the email reponse I posted the argument is that skateboarding at one point was not accepted and should treat inline with repect. No other sport is more hated and many feel no other sport has been financially destroyed just by plan hate of it. Inline skating is holding on by threads because there is no money in it any more. There is barely any youth in the sport anymore and thats because super opinionated kids make them feel like shit if they ever tried inline skating. I don't believe we need to compare inline to skateboarding at all. In no way or form can they be compared or said that one is better then the other. All anyone has asked for is respect. When Ellis goes on Stern, trashes the sport, that just lost the industry so much money and opportunity to grow.

You said earlier in your post: "a 1080 california roll (no grab all tucked up like a dick)".I'm assuming you meant that it looked bad. Now if you don't think that they should grab because their blades aren't going to fall off then whats wrong with a california roll? Alot of the early double flips were tucked up, that doesn't mean they didn't look sick. If you think spinning onto rails on skis looks sick, alot of those guys are "all tucked up like a dick" when they do it.
And why shouldn't I say that grabbing skis is awesome despite the fact that they're not going to fall off? Its true.
As for style, there are different ideas of style, alot of skaters out there absolutely kill it and do so with ridiculous style. I think you're not informed enough to make the statements in your above post. I do respect skateboarding, but I also respect rollerblading. You as a skier of all things should respect other sports.

skateboarding isn't cool because its "in with the hipsters". get a life ya dweeb just because rollerbladers can grind a 43634634 kink rail doesn't mean it's cool that just makes it dumber in my eyes. rollerblading is intense at times but don't cite stupid shit like that.

Hating on other sports is so goddamned stupid. If people are having fun doing something, let them have fun and respect them for doing it...

As skiers we should get this by now, but all you prejudiced fucks are saying 'fruitbootings gay', 'skateboardings gay'. Get over it already.

almost everyone that calls rollerblading gay cant do any of the tricks were doing. theyre just ignorant fucks. brian shima made some great points in his email unlike Jason Ellis. i dont get why people hate on other sports. if everybody is doing their very own thing and having fun at the same time, then whats the problem? i never diss skateboarding, i did it for 5 years! i wish people wouldnt be dicks.

So you are saying that skateboarders dont get asspain when they bail hard ? Fucking idiot, get some god damn respect, stop acting like a 5 year old and let people do whatever sport they wanna do and shut up, dipshit!

Brian Shima is the man, thats why I buy his skates.

I hope rollerbladeing never reaches the sell out level that skateboarding is at and I see skiing going towards. Skateboarding set out to be something new a rebellion to say, like shima said. now look at it, you can't drive down the street without seeing a fag on a longboard, or go to the skatepark without seeing a thousand little kids trying to skate board with their mommys watching them, not to mention ever going to a mall and not seeing the most rediculous store zumiez?wtf?

there is nothing original about skateboarding, I'm guessing there is more kids who own a skateboard than play footbal or basketball at your local high school.

thank you shima for issueing a challenge to that d-bag jason ellis.

I dont care what people say. I blade because its fun and its one hell of a workout. People tend to fear and reject with the "gay" argument any new concept.

man i got nothing but respect for rollerblading, shit has gotten so crazy over the years. and I agree with someone above, hating on other sports is dumb. Unless your a complete fool you should be able to see that it takes skill and atleast respect what it is they do.
