How will you mount your new skis?

My local shop fucked me so hard I almost KILLED them straight up. Binding ripped out last year so i went for a remount. They rip out again on an airbag and I find out they fucked up the remount the first time and drilled an extra set of holes without telling me which I would have obviously said fuck that as you can see the spacing of holes pretty much deems the left ski fucking mangled. Theres a lot more to the story but don’t feel like writing a novel about how hard my shop fucked me but anyways looks like im mounting my own skis this season!

I'm a -.5 park ski kind of guy.

My JJ's are at -1.5/-6.5 with 2 quiver killer mounts

My touring skis are like -5.5 I think.

The -6.5 mount is why I only trust like 2 shops to mount my skis. Otherwise I have a piece of lexan with holes drilled for pivots and markers that I clamp to the ski. I don't own a tap which some people swear by.

This is a good idea! Diy jig. How thick is the lexan?

I'm mounting my newest skis +2cm from recommended giving my -4.2 roughly from center. I was planning to use paper template but I think I'm going to use the paper template to drill a jig in some lexan now.

Can't you buy inserts (something like Quiver Killers) that can go into previously stripped holes and re-use the same holes?

Doesn't look like there is enough room for a helicoil. He could swap from a pivot to a griffon and have room but usually after being drilled three times, its new ski time.

It's made from half inch lexan. My dad made it by clamping it to a ski with holes drilled but no bindings, then matched all the holes. Another pro tip is to put tape on the base of your drill bit so that you don't drill through the ski; it's a lot easier to do than you may think.

My jig is actually made with 2 separate pieces of lexan with a sliding hinge between them. If we were to make it again, we would have used one single piece of lexan so that your holes will always line up properly. If you're done growing/plan to use the same boot size for the foreseeable future, I'd def recommend you do the same.
 
I always do 1 cm behind dead center. I feel like if i mount at true dead center they might fudge it and put me forward of dead center which would be wack.
 
I have 5 pairs of 186 pow skis all 116 underfoot and up. They're all at -2 or -3 from true center. I cant stand pow skis that are like -6.

I bought a proper bit from tognar which has a pretty massive step on it, you'd really have to push to get it deep.

I was thinking of using a paper template to mark the holes and drill out the plastic, maybe on a drill press, then clamping and having the plastic block provide the spacing and true vertical guide.

Also potentially measuring and notching the side edge to help with forward and aft measurement.

That makes no sense. mounting -6 back from center allows the pow ski to float easier and you dont have the tips dive as much. You should try a recommended mount on a traditional powder ski (not a bacon, or bentchetler.) they handle so well when mounted where they should be.

no, i hate them at -6. they float well enough already
 
I have always done my own mounting no matter how much the industry try’s to scare you I trust my self I am willing to take the blame if I screw up.I do a mock mount on a piece of ply wood check all the settings then remove this gives you a nice real template just copy hole pattern off plywood .I have not had a problem in 45 years
 
are those skis similar in camber profile? My 194 genomes are mounted like 3cm back from center and they crush. My 194 subtractions are like 6cm back and also crush. Genomes have so much rise in tip and tail the closer-to-center mount seems to work better while the slightly more conservatively rocketed subtractions operate well a bit farther back.

Yeah they're all pretty similar. Except my 09 Line EP's and 09 Moment Bibby's, they have no camber. Similar to your genomes probably. No carving ability whatsoever

I also have a pair of subtractions, but they're 186. I think they're only at -2. They're my least favorite pow ski, but favorite all mountain ski cause they just feel like burly park skis. I like the -2 mount because of the ease of spinning and buttering on them, although mounting them farther back would make them a better pow ski.
 
I have Surface Outsiders so dead center seems like the move, otherwise I would have like no tail support. Stoked on that, I always wanna get as close to center as possible for spinning and riding switch.
