How warm are helmets?

So, I hit my head on two rails in the last couple weeks, so I'm thinking it's probably a wise move to break down and start wearing a helmet.

I've tried on a bunch of helmets, both with and without a bennie on, and they almost always seem to fit better without a hat under them. So my question is, how warm are helmets without a hat (or with)?

I live in MN, so it's usually in the teens and overcast most of the time, so a warm head is pretty key. I realize some have vents, some have heavier liners, etc. Any advice would be appreciated! What model do you use, do you wear a hat under it, how warm is it?

Thanks!!

I've got a Bern Baker that comes with a removable liner; so can either wear it with the liner in; without, or have a hat on and helmet on top.

The liner is pretty warm; there's no vents in the helmet but I've never had a problem with my head getting too hot.

^Thanks, that's actually one of the helmets that seems to fit me well! How cold of weather do you usually ski in?

Well I ski in Europe so the weather can vary massively; I've skied in temperatures as low as -20C (-4 F) and never had a cold head, cold face; yes.

I've got a Bern Baker too. Rode the past few days with temps of -5. My head was never close to cold.

if the top of your head gets cold when you ski no matter the temps out you have some type of problem, ya your face will get cold but come on the top of your head?

my G10 MX is super warm wore it on a -40 day no hat and had no problems with cold...can't say the same about my feet, hands and face

i dont think you should ever have a problem with your ears getting cold when u are wearin a helmet with earpads. i had a g10 and a smith holt and they were both warm enough and that is in temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

g10mx is super warm, it's got big puffy earpads so you don't get cold and when it warms up you can slide open the vents on toplooks like shit with a hat and a goggle strap under it but just as is it's super warm

I'd say they are warmer than hats cause a helmet can't really absorb water like a hat can, which happens to me sometimes since i have stupid wet east coast snow. i have a salomon brigade.
