Ok so my dell laptop was overheating and the tech guy came and replaced the motherboard and after he was done "fixing" it would never get past some black screen. I called dell and they told me they would send me new computer. I got the new one today and I want to know how to transfer the all my music, pictures, files ect. to the new computer. Since I cant get past that black screen on the old computer I cannot burn the files to a cd. Can I take the computer somewhere to have the files transfered? thanks for the help

if you feel comfortable enough, remove the hard drive from the old machine and put it in the new one as a slave, you can then transfer the files through explorer

I think my new hard drive ia larger than the old one can i transfer it on somehow...mabey with a external hard drive?

I think what you could do is buy an external hard drive enclosure like the ones here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092+1053807124&name=2.5%22 And take the hard drive from your old laptop and put it in the enclosure. Then you hook it up to your new new laptop, and you should be good to go from there. There might be a few setup things that you have to do, but nothing too complicated.

But first thing you need to do is figure out what the interface is on your old hard drive (IDE or SATA).

dude, it's a laptop. Can't add an extra internal HD to a laptop. There are adapters that allow you to attach it an IDE bus on a full size PC.

ah missed that part. youre right tho, thats the way to go, we use one of those at the company i work for. dont buy the Vantec sata/ide to usb tho, we have it and 3/4 of the time it doesnt even detect the drive.
