How to Prevent a Sprained Ankle?

Okay so I was skiing yesterday at my hill's first rail jam and I was going for a 270 out and I only got about 180 out and I kinda washed out but my binding didn't really release and my ankle/knee got kind of twisted and now I have a twisted ankle. So I was just wondering what could of caused this? I mean I never even knew it was possible to sprain an ankle with a ski boot on.

So

Should I get new boots?

Lower my din?(It is at a 7 or 8..I forget)

or was it just cause I failed at 270ing off and washed out and had some bad luck?

Oh and I have marker free 12.0 bindings and technica sx9 boots(or something similar to that)

Any help would be greatly appreciated since this sprained ankle is extremely gay and I really don't want to get another one and want try to prevent another one.

your boots are probably too big, because it should be your knee twisting in that kinda fall, so if your ankle did, your boots probably arent tight enough

I also think it is cause I didn't have ski socks on and I normally do and they are kinda old and broken it a lot. So I will try to make them as tight as possible.

Thanks.

first of all i would ditch the marker bindings... i have had the WORST experienced with marker bindings, and i have seen people mangle themselves because of marker bindings either not releasing or releasing too easily.

if you have weak ankles do some stability ball/bosu ball exercises and calf raises and spelling the alphabet out with your feet and stuff like that to strengthen your ankles.

to heal it up, RICE is the only thing you can really do for a sprained ankle.

rest-ice-compression-elevation

if your ankle is still in pain/swollen, get a tensor bandage, wrap that sucker up (not too tight tho, you should be able to fit 2 fingers underneath the wrap), ice it throughout the day, 20 minutes at a time (the best time to ice it is after you have been walking/standing on it), elevate that bad boy when you're icing it and when you sleep and whenever possible.

I have just been putting my foot in a big ass thing of ice water for about 20-30min at a time..

Should I just keep doing that but just make it around 10-15?

if your not icing directly on the skin where would you ice it?hover over the skin? fail. and its 20 minutes of ice, one hour off. i sprained my ankle last week

if you put a cloth or w/e underneath its not as intense so you can actually keep in on there for longer (assuming the ice doesn't melt)

the best thing to do with a swollen ankle is get a Styrofoam cup and fill it with water and freeze it. when it is frozen, cut the bottom of the cup off and massage the ice directly onto your ankle. do this for about 10 minutes (no more because you'll give yourself frost bite or the ice will have melted)
