How to not get bummed out as a senior in hs

Anyone have advice on how to make it through senior year without losing motivation? I’ve already applied to colleges (most likely going to MSU) and I get out of school 2 hours earlier than normal this year. I used to fill my time with extracurriculars but I don’t enjoy those as much as I used to, and there’s nothing going on right now.

On an average day I’m home by 1:00 and have the rest of the day to do absolutely nothing. I’ve been lifeguarding for 3 years now and I wasn’t able to get the winter instructing job since I won’t be 18 in time. Ive also been rock climbing a lot but friends are rarely available and it gets boring if I overdo It. I’ve just been more lazy, grouchy, and unmotivated as ever.

TLDR: OP is bored af with senior year and feels like there’s no point in life anymore.

White folk problems

Get a job or some other activities OP. At that age your mind can spin out of control if you don't stay busy. Boredom is not good. Rest when you are old and tired. Good luck. When you are in it high school seems like it takes forever but looking back it went by very fast. Also, if you have extra time it's worth it to apply for more scholarships. Most people that are eligible to apply don't even follow through with the application so the odds are better than you might expect. The money is refundable too so if your school is already paid for and then you get more scholarships you will just end up getting the money to spend.

OP i hear ya, i think we all got a little disengaged toward the end of high school. but keep those grades up and stay active and thinking about the future.

i promise you that being good at extra-curriculars and sports will become very cool again very soon (and people with no sports or skills or passions quickly become very boring and uninteresting in their 20s) and you'll only limit your options in the future if your grades get shitty

stay active, stay healthy, practice your hobbies and sports. you have your whole life ahead of you, don't let your senioritis screw you over now

I'd say spend all your free time trying to get laid. When you get to college, you don't want all the girls thinking you suck dick at sex

Appreciate the free time and cash when you can. You wont be having much of it for the next 40 years

Learn how to sew and then make awesome clothing and then you can start your own company, and because your company got so fliiippping big you don't even go to college and then you become a worldwide clothing maker , everyone wants your clothes, you are loaded with cash because you don't hire any employees which means you will never have free time ever, but still will take in that cash money, then abruptly you will go missing and your closest friend will take over the company(the one who took you out) and take in all the cash, but you won't found this out because you didn't die, you were in a coma for a long time and you lost your arm, you find yourself in a hospital but you have to leave with this other patient and then some chick comes in and tries to kill you then you run away and then you find out that there are a ton of dudes with guns in the hospital and you need to get away then there's a fire guy , you shoot bullets but it does nothing so you just run away with this other dude on a white horse, then you have your headphones on and have your mixtape goin' listening to THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD and you remember how you never should have gotten bored and started making clothing, you really should've just spent your time hitting the dab and fortnite dancing until you go to college...

Bro!

You gotta start living!! Go out, hit up some parties and raves. Go skiing with your friends.

It is up to you to make your life exciting and give it meaning

Try really hard in all of your classes. It may seem like you’re learning shit that doesn’t mean anything, but you’ll thank yourself in the the future. I hung out with a bunch of idiots in high school who didn’t give a fuck about anything. I’m not friends with any of those kids anymore, and none of them went on to do anything great. I’m the only one out of that friend group who’s going to school, and I often wish I’d tried harder and done more to enhance my potential.

tl;dr: learn as much as you can and don’t become lazy because life is difficult and in the end all you really have is what’s in your brain

I've found that, as much as we idealize the thought of relaxing on a beach with a cold drink all day, or cozying up on a saturday to watch netflix, that shit will get boring and depressing real quick. The vast majority of humans need to be doing something productive or fulfilling with their time. When people in this thread tell you to enjoy your free time, you should take that as direction to pick up a hobby like weightlifting or mountain biking or carpentry, whatever. My vote is on weightlifting personally, it's a good way to get confidence going into college.

Life is about to ramp the fuck up for you when you start college. If you spend these next ~10 months just chillin, you're gonna be in the wrong mindset for college, soft and undisciplined your first semester. It happened to me and I wish I'd maintained a better work ethic in Senior year.

You're going to look back on this in 10 years and envy yourself, enjoy zero responsibilities while it lasts.

Yeah senior year hs should be easy, especially if you're into a school and for sure going. You basically have nothing to worry about at the moment. For the next ~5 years you have a plan, more or less.

Learn math, learn how to not write like a four year old, then go do stuff. You won't have all this free time soon enough.

Thanks for all the replies. My grades are great and all that, it’s just out of school when I lose purpose. I live in Texas right now where there’s nothing to do but go out for food so skiing/mountain biking etc isn’t really an option. I just gotta stop complaining and start enjoying

Wow I miss that feeling of being a senior in HS I was in a similar situation.. after you get your HS diploma and in most cases are legally not allowed to return to the HS as you normally would, life gets pretty interesting as now it is a battle of absolute survival.

You go to college you have some protection as you would if you were still a child.. but if you go out into the trenches as a newbie with no high income skill and little knowledge it’s like getting thrown into a pool of pirhannahs. Everyone is out to get you.. if you do good they want your money.. if you do bad they want you expelled and put into adult “detention”. My best advice for You at this point in your life is to steer clear of random people at the store/ gym who approach you.. and start telling you about an “opportunity” most likely they are with Amway and like 99% of IBOs, if you get involved you may very likely get burned! Remember that name Amway.. so many young adults need to hear it.

Find a life mentor, and find what is fulfilling to You..

Do whatever you want, except doing jack shit. Learn or do something you always wanted to do, do some cool work to get some fun skills, volunteer, ANYTHING, even if shit doesn't work out. Shit hits you fast when you're older, and all that free time... such a waste. The old adage boring people get bored may apply. Don't be boring.

OP do you know what you want to major in, or what general area of study you want to go into out of HS?

Really have no idea what I want to do, but I saw MSU offers snow science and that sounds more interesting than anything else.

Congrats on deciding on a major with no real future. Instead, flush $50,000 of your parents money down the Shitter. It will be quicker.

Dumb mother fucker alert.

Definitely just said It sounded interesting. Just like 99% of people I have no idea what I want to do and that was something I’d never seen before. Will it make you feel better if I let you pick? Or would you prefer to keep getting angry at every single thread you see on newschoolers?

If you let me pick your major you would be doing yourself a favor.

If that's what you are leaning towards go and try to find some science programs at a local college, it will give you a good taste of what studying the major could be like as well as an opportunity to pick the profs brain. By doing this you'll be building extracurricular that you can put on your application, as well as getting a good feel for what the major might be like which could potentially save you a lot of time and money down the road. It might not be the most fun thing you could do with your free time, but who knows who you might meet and what opportunities may arise.

Also learning cool shit never hurts. I personally took a gap year and I really quickly learned to appreciate how much better learning random cool shit about the world is than cleaning up peoples tables at a restaurant.

First off, MSU is fucking rad. I go to school there, and the college community is so dope, the people are super nice, and Bozeman is about the best place for anyone to ever live. That being said, there's so much shit to do, and it's made me spend a lot of money while going to do fun shit. Get a job, save as much money as you can, buy a car if you don't already have one or if your parents aren't buying you one, just grind and make some money with your free time OP.

If you don't know what you want to study, you don't have to worry about deciding on a major right away. Just fuck around and take some basic classes and it'll help you figure out what you want.

Plus your still living at home so get a job, work 4-5 days a week after school and start putting cash away. Use this said cash for skiing, drugs/alcohol, maybe a new bike or car.

Make sure to keep your grades up and think about what you want your future self to look like. Whats truly important to you?

Pretty easy to enjoy life my friend.

Thats hilarious. When I look back at my high school life 15 years ago, all I could remember is how I hated high school and that Im happy that its over. Its only when I graduated college and found a career that I began my lifelong retirement.

High school sucked. I was flat broke all the time, couldnt get a job because I was too young... all I had was my skis and a wal-mart bike. My parents prefered that I have a sheltered life in order to be in good health...So never signed me up for anything.

All I recommend is to start a project. It can be anything from making a garden to learning to play music. The beauty of being in high school is the potential to try something, find out if you love it or hate, then move on to the next thing. You have to remember that people wont be there to take your hand and help you develop a skill; you have to go out and do it yourself...unless your parents own a business or filthy rich to plug you with a job.

skateboarding or blading might help if its not too cold. Get your dad to buy you some beer so you can have a tolerance before you start college.

Maybe find something to learn about online?

V sauce has some great stuff.

Learn an instrument, get into metal/woodworking, build a backyard ski or skate setup. Idk do whatever. Free time is all what you make if it. And as mentioned above you'll probably not have too much in the future so enjoy it.

Once you enter the normal work force it keeps going day by day, week by week, year by year until you get rich or die trying.

Some people are happier with obligations tho.

The older i get the more i enjoy being occupied.

Feels better than procrastinating.

I hated high school. But my parents made me pick an after school sport because I was Bored and just sat in my room. I ended up choosing basketball. Glad they made me because that was how I discovered athletics were actually fun. I wasn't that good but it gave me a focus alomg with my classes. Because I had no clue what I was going to do after high school I joined the military. That was a tough part of my life but a great experience and that of course paid for my college education.

I thought the goth/emo/depressed high schooler fad had passed already?

A lot of people are taking this thread as that. I’m fine, my grades are fine, I was just getting bored with all the extra time and wanted someone to give me a different perspective so I don’t waste my last year.

I respect that. You could get into working out / body building. It gets addicting and you can do it forever. There is so much research to be had that can fill your time. The gym will also help with injury prevention and stress management. I got into going to the gym regularly for the first time this year and it has drastically helped me with my stress levels of being an engineering student.

Highschool is boring and pretty much pointless. It seems like math was the only thing that I really remember anything of. Who can care about Romeo and Juliet... The main point about schools is to teach you how to learn

Now that we are past the point, we can talk about how to have fun with this. Tell some jokes in class get detention. Make some memories and have some fun with it.

Outside of school there is too much to do. There are so many video games that you can't beat them all in your lifetime. I had game fly and I beat a game once a week. I wanted to get better at skiing so I was at the gym a ton. Don't forget about the high school parties. When I get to class on monday/tuseday I spend the 10 minutes talking to anyone near by about the epic party/skiing. Thursday/Friday I am asking everyone what they are planning on doing (so I can find said parties). Going from the classroom to the skatepark was also one of the best things. I joined the green club with some friends. We met up after class on tuesdays then went to the park afterwards.

but who wants to enjoy life. You should just keep studying after school, learn languages, and maybe pick up coding. Life is all about making tons of money so if you don't abide by these ideals your a failure

Hike, workout, read, write, get more hobbies... two hours after school a day in rotation.

I agree with the job posts, but that can be a big challenge in HS.

Definitely agree about picking up hobbies. Give everything a shot, it's usually worth it while you still have time. I'm only a freshman in college (see you next year lol) but I definitely miss being able to come home from school and play guitar/banjo for 6 hours at a time.

Also, you don't have to go to college right away, or at least you shouldn't have to. It's a big commitment and from my point of view it seems like it would suck more to realize that engineering is your jam when you've already completed 50 credits in interpretive dance than it would to come in a year older.

This is very true. Do something to make yourself better and it would be even better if you solve the issue stated below. Maybe research some jobs, try and interview some people and see what sounds iterating. There are tons of websites to do this on. It'll make you so much more confident about the choice to go to college if you actually end up doing something you like.

I'd try to think of this to. Snow Science isn't really a major that many people can excel in. It has little to no job opportunities.
