How to make films.

It has always been one of my dreams to make a ski film, like a good one too. but I have no experience and no idea where to start. I have a group of friends that would be down to do it but thats about it, and a gopro hero 8 black. Like literally any bit of advice would help. thanks
 
I using an old Nixon to film a little project and a hero 8 black so it’s less than ideal I want a nice panasonic or Sony but I’m not vv good with technology and would have no idea what to do with them.
 
I would say just start filming with what you got. Make edits all the time and keep getting better. Buy better gear as you improve and really get into it.

Honestly the gopro 8 is pretty solid.

Just pull it out and start filming and go from there. Dont look at it likw you have to go from never making edits to instantly making a ski movie on par with level 1 etc. Just go shoot your friends hiking rails, sending a cliff, getting some cool sidehits, eating taquitos at 711, whatever. Make some cool edits and learn. Even if you don't end up getting super into it you'll have some funny edits of your friend group to look back on.
 
Practice. Film everything, make random edits. This lets you get familiar with the cameras, software, and your own mental processes. When you watch others' videos, pay close attention to the angles, lighting, movement, etc. I'm not a film maker by any means, but the other summer when Level 1 released all their movies, I felt like I learned so much about moviemaking just from watching Josh, Freedle, and others progress in their own skills and techniques.
 
Filmmaking is all about telling a story. No matter what you're filming that's true. The best place to start is right here, right now with whatever you have. Making good films will come in time and experience. Some of the videos I made way back when I still think are entertaining even though technically they might not be good. Just have fun and capture the story. Oh and don't get caught up in resolution, it doesn't matter. The Godfather was filmed on basically garbage compared to modern cameras and it's the greatest film ever made.
 
Start making little "fun ski day" bangers right now. Use a little cell phone app or the gopro app, rip a song off YouTube, practice clipping your takes, and use that as a starting place. It will be quick to learn about different angles, storytelling, timing. You just gotta start right now.
