How to make a box with coping?

Hey guys, I'm looking to build like a 1 foot wide box with metal coping, and I was wondering what the best way to to it would be. I was thinking making the frame like 1.5 feet wide, and have like 2 inch wide metal/steel pipes on each side, and then put 1 foot of plastic in the middle, about 1/8th of an in higher that the metal. Would that work? Or do you guys have other/better ways to make it? +K for good answers.
 
I would use HDPE instead of plastic because it slides better....as for the coping the way you described it sounds pretty good but it may be a little big i might do 1.5 in coping...hope this helps
 
Yeah, I'm using HDPE, probably 1/4 or 1/2 of an inch thick. And is 1.5 big enough? Can you grip good for switch ups and spins out?
 
^ If your asking about the HDPE with swith ups on a box you dont necessarily have to hop you can just slide it by pressing with your edges on the coping. Just make sure the HDPE is above the metal and your good
 
If you want to go for a real box and such thats awesome go for your idea. but if you just want a box that acts exactly like any box at a mountain but is loads cheaper, take smaller PVC pipe (1" or so diameter) and put 6-10 of them on a board how ever wide (attach by screwing up through the board into the pvc, obviously with short enough screws that they don't poke through the top of the pvc), then screw that to a frame. I made one, cost me 20-30 dollars, slides and acts exactly like any box you will slid on at a mountain. But as I said-doesn't look super professional, works great tho.
 
I might try that, but I already got a PVC rail with 2 pipes about 2 inches wide. I would rather make a box with coping, thanks though. Does anyone know if PVC would work just as well as metal for coping? Would my ski be able to catch it without chipping or peeling it? Cause I have a box with just HDPE on it and my friends board chipped it when he tried a boardslide.
 
Your skis won't chip pvc at all as long as the edges aren't super sharp (then you'd be more likely to catch, but i've never caught on pvc even with semi sharp edges, don't worry about catching). I've been gripping the edges of my box for 2 years and no damage to the pvc. I have the same sorta setup, 3 double barrel 2-3 in wide pvc rails and a 1 foot wide pvc box
 
Yeah, It'd probably just be easiest to put TONS of heavy duty outdoor glue on both the coping and the wood. Just make sure you put the hdpe on first.
 
unless they are somewhat beveled and have a rounded edge, i suggest not using this.

square coping you buy at a hardware store ≠ square coping at the skatepark. skateparks have theirs custom welded so it is more gentle/rounded at the corner of the angle.

if the corner is too sharp you will absolutely trash your edges/bases trying to switch up/grip the box.
 
Ok. I was wondering this because today I was on my box without coping and I went to slide it and my back ski peeled a bunch of HDPE off and I stopped dead.
 
you ca bolt it in but make sure the metals are the same so they dont rust together or something i cant remember. just make sure they are the same metal if you are bolting them!!
