How to collect money from family members

Long story short, my cousin owes me a few hundred dollars. He doesn't seem to be in a hurry to pay me back, but I want to get it fast before we both forget. He has been telling me to come over and collect portions of the debt in cash. He has owed me this money since September, and so far he has repaid me 40$. Everytime I text him asking to stop by and grab some cash, he ignores them or he tells me he's not home. Sooo how do I go about getting my cash back.

Getting money back off family shouldn't be so hard but there's always a black sheep. Leave it for a week or two then ring him or speak to him face to face. Get the word out to the rest of the family that he owes you money it's embarrassing for him at the next family reunion.

To be honest, this is why lending money to family is super difficult. It is hard to press them to get it paid back, and depending on the amount, it is just easier to write it off and never lend them cash again.
 
I fucking HATE people that duck you.

The worst is when people who haven't paid you for a while make it seem as though you're a dick for remembering money owed from the past. "Oh bru that was like 4 months ago" as if that means the debt is invalid. They're the asshole for letting it drag on and not paying you, not you for remembering. Honestly even with no family sometimes it's easiest to just write it off and cut ties with them or just never lend them money again.

I know some people write it off and continue to be great friends with people but for me I don't really like to be friends with those types of people. If it's something small it's whatever but in general it's the principle.

I'll "lend" money to people that really need it and realistically can't pay anything at least for a while and never expect or ask for it back. But that's different.

I would say talk to him and figure out a plan. Maybe he doesn't have it at the moment but as long as he can pay it back eventually and is cool with making it happen, then that sounds alright to men. Biggest thing for you, don't lend money you can't afford to be out for a while or even out forever.

Sometimes shit happens, so you aren't always going to get it right back. That said in those situations it's best if the person says "Hey this this and this happened, I know I owe you $X but I can't give you more then $Y right now. I'll get it to you as soon as I can. Sorry about the wait"

I owed this girl nearly 200 for a vibes ticket a few years back. I looked for her all weekend but her friend who gave me the ticket wouldn't take my money, my friend was hard to get a hole of, and eventually her phone was dead by day 2 of the fest. Car broke down and a bunch of other shit happened right after and I was struggling. I moved to NH somewhere in this time and was really struggling to get things moving. My hours got cut right away and I was eating ramen every day and just covering rent.

Anyway I saved as I could and the first time I saw her in feb at a show in boston I paid her and bought her a drink. It sucked to owe her for that time but I think she knew I would pay her, and understood I was in a shit spot for a bit. Also she was doing alright and that wasn't money that was killing her at the time.

Update: My uncle found out about the debt. He then proceeded tear my cousin a new asshole, and kick him out of the house (For other reasons as well). My cousin has agreed to pay me the full amount tomorrow. My uncle is making him pay interest too.

How old is your cousin? Glad to hear things got cleared up, hopefully no family relationships were harmed in the process.

I went through something similar with a good friend of mine. He owed me a couple hundo for a full ski setup and he yet he still somehow had money to smoke weed everyday and go out drinking on the weekends.. Luckily things have been settled since then and no kneecaps had to be broken.

He's 19. Now he actually feels super bad about it, whereas 2 weeks ago he couldn't give a shit. He's sorta done a full 180 with his life in the past few days. He decided to stop trying to become a rapper, and he's now trying to join the Marines (or at the very least get a job). He opened up to me last night and told me he's actually glad he got into debt.

My Uncle let him back in the house a few days ago, and he still hasn't paid me. I texted him today and he told me he can't pay me until later this week. I need the money for work on Monday, but this motherfucker cant get his life together for more than 2 fucking seconds.

Get agressive, start threatening him and threaten to call the cops, he sounds like a dumbass so he'll probably believe you. If you're not down for that tell your uncle whats up maybe he can help you get it back. If not then honestly go beat his ass.

That's the worst. If somebody has no money to pay you back, but they're working and not going out that's fine. Even going out in poverty mode once in a great while whatever. But there are people that will go out every night, even buy other people drinks etc while they owe somebody loot. Super uncool.
 
If needed just steal something like his xbox or other things. Tell him he can have his shit back when he pays you or you'll sell it.

If he tries to say you stole it say he sold it to you or traded it to you to pay off his debt.

Unfortunately some people are really shitty and care about nothing but themselves. You're out money but he's not so he doesn't give a shit. If he loses some of his stuff he might care. And if he doesn't at least you can sell it and recoup some of your funds.

Did this to a kid in my hometown my freshman yr in college who stole an OZ from me when I was passed out at a party back home. "kidnapped" him with two ghetto kids pretending to just smoke because he did know I'd found out it was him. Searched his car while they held him in the back of mine and found some of my other stuff he took from me. Grabbed his gps and a couple other things and told him he could have it back when he repayed me.

He showed up at my parents house the next day with a lawyer after crying to me in the car and say he was so sorry and he'd pay me back. Did not end well for me.

Well kidnapping, even if pretend is quite an escalation in the eyes of the law. Unfortunately he was a little bitch on top of that. Obviously you can get in trouble for stealing stuff back from him anyway, but if you omit kidnapping from your strategy it's not too bad.

That said a lot of people who steal are little bitches, and if you steal from them will cry about it.

that kid should still be counting his blessings. He could have easily stole a bag of weed from someone waaaay more shadier and dangerous that has no problem fucking that dudes day up. Why do people still think its okay to try and rip off anyone involved in shit like drug dealing? besides them not going to the cops, wouldn't you be looking over your shoulder every minute to make sure that he didn't send his Vincent & Jules to fuck you up? Gotta make up that lost product and profit somehow and you cant ever bullshit bullshitters.

same thing happened to my friend only the other way around. Kid breaks into my friends car and steals a bunch of shit out of it. He gets confronted, caves like a bitch/apologizes and tries to be all buddy-buddy with everyone, we tell him to get fucked. Literally the next day we all dip out of class to go hit some shitty PVC rails up in the woods, our buddy leaves and immediately calls one of our friends to tell us he just saw the same kid sitting on the curb in handcuffs with cops tearing his car apart. I guess while we were having a great PVC session, this kid and some girl went to go smoke during lunch and the girl completely ratted him out after getting called out for being blazed. Shit was awesome to see, fuck that orange county piece of shit.

Hahahaha I am praying and waiting for the day I hear he gets busted either for pot or for a DUI. It is bound to happen. Will probably get out of it cuz of family connections though.

He's also an "orange county piece of shit". Been spoiled since birth, BIG TIME. Has zero need to be stealing anything from anyone as he was fed from a silver spoon since birth. Totalled a Benz S class that was a year old when drunk, got out of the DUI, and got a brand new 5 series 2 days later.

Worst part was we were "homies" and had been hanging out on the daily for like a year and a half at that point. Kids got no respect for shit. When I had him in my car questioning him he tried to blame like 3 other of his closest buddies before admitting it was him, after we were trying to get him to repeat that blame statement on video to show to whoever he was blaming. All of this was AFTER I had found a bunch of my shit in his trunk, sunglasses, a fucking cup full of quarters, a car charger, and other misc junk. OZ was gone, obviously.

Mommys lawyer scared my parents and the shitstorm came back to me for a second time. fucker.
 
Well it's December and he still owes me money. I've been trying for the past week to collect some, and he won't get back to me. All I get in reply is "Yeah hollup". I'm fucking pissed and at this point I'm ready to kick the shit out of him or blackmail him. I know for a fact that I could get him kicked out again by tonight if I call my uncle.

Buy a boot for a wheel on craigslist or something, and tell him he can have his car back when he repays you.
 
Get a hold of his social media accounts through one way or another. Hold the accounts hostage or post about the shitty stuff he has done. If he's taken pictures of him doing stuff his parents wouldn't want him to, post that as well. Make him an embarrassment for the family

From the sounds of it he will beg to have his accounts or phone back. Refuse to acknowledge that you have either.

Try to get a statement on some sort of record from him saying he will pay the money back in full, other wise it comes down to your word vs his.

In the end don't lend money to shitty people. Unfortunately shitty people tend to be family members as well.
